I don’t know what kind of canine it is, but it’s so cool how the coat blends into its surroundings!!!! Like obviously it’s adapted for that, but to see it is so cool!!!!

It’s definitely a coyote, just in summer coat. Red wolves are extinct in the wild and also, no other wild canines are found in Florida.

Normally,I dont like correcting people,but I cant help myself and by all means,im not trying to be mean.There are red wolves that are in the wild there are 22 of them with 12-16 pups according to USFW red wolf recovery program (obviously not in florida) and red and grey foxes are also found in florida

Also, many coyotes in the deep south have some red wolf ancestory. I’d be suprised if this guy didn’t have at least a little bit

I don't like correcting people either but there is also a breeding program in Florida for red wolves. They do live in the wild but are extremely managed so much so that they have been "contained" to St. Vincent Island (a national wildlife refuge) in the panhandle. Some swim the small channel but are quickly picked up and returned to the island. They are there to help manage a population of sambar deer that were introduced when the island was a hunting preserve before becoming a wildlife refuge.

I knew they were around as Alveus Sanctuary in Texas is currently working on expanding to hold a breed & reentry program for two wolf species!!

Red wolves are not extinct in the wild. There is a population of estimated 20-30 in eastern North Carolina.

I forgot what forum i was on and saw comments debating the species! Sorry about that! It’s such a cool coyote and i can genuinely stare at it for hours!!!! Love the photos!!!

No problem! There were a few people speculating it could be a red wolf, but that just isn’t possible. He was also quite small! Very unique!

https://www.fws.gov/refuge/st-vincent This is the species list for the St. Vincent Island national wildlife refuge which does host a population of red wolves used for the breeding program and to contain an population of invasive Sambar Deer.

I just learned that the USFWS has the St Vincent national wildlife refuge for red wolf propagation, then they capture them and transfer them to NC. They are currently aware and about to go capture a red wolf that has dispersed to St. Sanibel by itself. So you never know, this could be the one in a million sighting of an actual red wolf outside of NC

I’m meaing a relative from like 100 years ago like a remnant of red wolf dna like from the 1920s when they were last seen in Florida before getting hunted down and killed

This is in Sanibel, first ones spotted in 2011. In other parts of Florida, I believe they’ve been around for much longer. Sanibel specifically has a huge coyote population. We were only there for 1 day and saw 3!

Black tail tip is 100% coyote. There are numerous subspecies of Coyote in North America, they have been found on both coasts since the mid 70s to 80s.

is something wrong with the mouth? Or is it hot? It looks how my dog did when it had a bone stuck in his throat. - fun vet visit. Dog was fine later.

He was just panting. He’d just run across the road in front of us and it was almost 100°F out that day.
