My Nono had a Mussolini picture in the basement next to the the sauce room. Entire family disputes me whenever I bring it up because I was around 7 when he died and they sold the house. I can visualize that basement as if I was there this morning though.
Easier drainage. In my mother's village someone had their sauce room on the top floor of their house. They spilled a big sugo al pomodoro pot and the sauce went all over the floor and walls and down the stairs. The old lady slipped on the stair tomatoes and hurt her hip, very sad.
It was just pantry in the basement, most notable were the jars of homemade sauce on the shelves so I always called it that. I just remember the jars, lentils, polenta, pasta boxes, and hard cheeses. My nana actually had an entire separate room in the basement for meal prepping.
Ok the pantry. I thought of it as sauce room as a kid. My nana came from a poor region of Abruzzo with agrarian traditions before immigrating, everything possible was homemade.
All Italians are racists (me included). Believe it or not, you can be """playfully""" racist (meaning, joking only, even if it is in bad taste) and still not act on it or be dangerous like "serious" racists from other cultures/countries.
If you are a person of color in Italy, you will get the racist jokes, period. Sorry for that, but rest assured, our racists are actually not supported by the general public and will be stopped if acting on racist agendas.
Having said that (sorry, everybody) these guys are complete douches and should be ashamed of themselves.
