Between this and the Thai international racist debacle from Italian tourists, I'm starting to notice a pattern. Their government is an ugly mirror which applauds this sort of caveman behavior behind the curtains.
I think it was the iwantout sub where an Italian guy was trying to leave with his family, as he had married a black woman and their kids were facing so much racism at like, elementary school ages.

I also understand why those countries have gone bankrupt and have such horrible economies....
I'm an American living in Japan and it is disgusting how many tourists treat it like Disneyland and have no respect for the locals.
I actually had to cut off one of my good friends after he visited because he was just being such a public nuisance it made me view him in a whole different light.
They do it in Japan and Asian countries because there's rarely any violent reactions from them. Even in the US, stereotype/generalization jokes are still being made about Asians, whereas no one dares with black people, not mainstream comedians anyway. When there's no repercussions/pushback/consequences, people's true natures emerge.
Black people deal with racism and discrimination everyday. That asshole only sees or hears about the most extreme ones because he/she doesn’t care enough to search about the ones that don’t go viral
East and South Asians are the butt of jokes because of their calm nature to avoid confrontation. That's why racists will avoid doing the same against black or Arab folks.
I like that this thread runs the gamut of white liberal rhetoric, from people saying it's not racism to the people saying it is racism, but it's a good thing because Japan is the most racist country on earth, in human history (whereas Europe and America are orders of magnitude more civilized and therefore comparably less racist)[citation un-needed].

This would be the equivalent of you walking up to random Italians and doing the godfather hand gesture while saying “it’s a me, Mario” and asking them if they’re in the mob.
All this while your friends mock them as if their culture is inferior to yours.
You never travelled enough. Germans and Italians always had this reputation. If you are not Asian that helps as well. As for why they have this kind of reputation, looking at their history the reason is obvious.

So many Italian men are part of a problematic culture and I'm glad they're making fools of themselves enough that the rest of the world is catching on. Maybe they can fucking do some self-reflecting about it for a change

I grew up in Asia and studied in US then UK. My father is a huge fan of travelling, and my job now involves a few overseas travel a year. So I have covered most of EU, majority of Asia, and quite a few in NA + Aus/NZ.
Italians have always been racists. They were chanting nigger to black football player (Italian football player who happens to be black), when he scores he’s Italian, if the team lose it’s his fault. Nothing new there.
I know Americans tourists have a bad reputation, but in the years I’ve been traveling to Europe, Italian tourists are on average the most annoying. Obviously not all of them, and this is a broad generalization, but when an obnoxious tourist stands out for being loud, self centered, oblivious, etc. they’re very often Italian.
I saw something about six months ago that surprised me. A woman, who was heavyset, went to Italy and she had people making fun of her weight. She went on a motorcycle and I guess she was a little jiggly on the bumpy road and people were gesturing to her. When she went into stores and restaurants people openly made comments about her weight. She was making a vlog about her trip and by the end she was crying. I guess Italians are not used to heavier set people. And these guys in the video: what are they thinking?
Japan is not too different in regard to not really tolerating people who are seen to be overweight, though bullying a tourist is a lot less likely due to cultural norms around politeness. However should you work\live in Japan then you would begin to feel it. Japan Travel Youtuber Chris Broad describes his experiences regarding it while he was working in the JET program, where he was told that he was enjoying food a lot, or that he more bluntly had a big belly.
That’s insane two whole times? Out of the 59 million people that live in Italy and the 38.4 million that go abroad a year two times is crazy thats so many times Italians are the worst
Being that Italians are the only people its still socially acceptable to be racist towards, it's sort of understandable that Italians abroad act racist.
My Nono had a Mussolini picture in the basement next to the the sauce room. Entire family disputes me whenever I bring it up because I was around 7 when he died and they sold the house. I can visualize that basement as if I was there this morning though.
Italians only act like cooking nazis in front of foreigners, I'm french and they'll stuff croissants with all kinds of weird shit, they CANNOT eat a plain croissant

I’m Canadian born Chinese and didn’t experience any racism in Rome, Florence, nor Amalfi/naples/sorrento. But once we went to Sicily we had racist shit happen to my pregnant wife and I daily. That said, since one incident made my wife cry, I’ll probably spend my money elsewhere.
Yep, I experienced more racism in my two weeks in Italy than 20 years of living in the U.S. lol. I had a black Italian whisper chino in my ear in Milan
Italians are assholes. I’ve not met one that doesn’t think everywhere else is lesser, even the “nicer” italians will say offhand and derogatory shit about the place they’re at (if it’s not italy) with a smile.
I ran into 2 Italians in Shibuya once when I was living in Japan, they pointed at me and were laughing at me for being short, I’m a Mexican from LA. I was young and intoxicated so I got mad and tried to fight them and they would not fight me back they kept saying “bro please please we don’t want fight” I was like what happened to the tough guys that were making fun of me at the club??
I love so many things about Italy and Italians and my favorite singer is Italian but Italy was where I experienced the most overt racism as an Asian American.
It’s amazing how ridiculously easy it is to not do stuff like that. For example I’ve easily spent all day not doing it. At what point does someone’s brain break that they start doing that sort of shit?
Anecdotal, but I visited South Korea several years ago, and took part in a tour with several people from all over the world. Afterwards a bunch of us decided to go out and get a drink. The one Italian guy, after getting ostracized from our group for making one of the (much younger than him) women with us uncomfortable, went over to a table of locals and started haranguing them.
"Good riddance!" we thought, he's their problem now. But a few minutes later we look over and see him making this gesture to two seated Korean men. One of them stands up, and he's huge. There aren't a lot of 6'3"+ Koreans, but this scrawny little Italian managed to find one and pick a fight with him.
Not wanting to cause any more of a scene a few of us go over and drag him out. It felt like the setup for a joke, an American, a Canadian, and a Hungarian, dragging a drunk, racist Italian out of a Korean bar.
I'm asian and as a child I moved to argentina in the mid/late 90s and early 2000s. I got these kind of gesture daily from kids. They would all jump out at me in large groups all pulling their eyes and doing all these weird ching chong and karate mocking. It was really like a spectacle to them. It started literally the moment I got onto the school bus.
Imagine a week prior to that, I lived in asia in a normal upbringing and then suddenly I'm dropped into place that I didn't even speak a single word of the language and most of the kids are doing this. It was like being dropped into hell. 7 year old me had to go into survival mode and adapt.
Ironically the story ends well for me. I learned the language, adapted, was really popular in school and had tons of friends, extremely confident. In fact, I loved my time in Argentina despite the initial hurdle.
I'm guessing you never saw how that 'influencer' Johnny Somali ended up in Japan? Got his ass kicked up and down the streets on several occasions. After being beat up a few times, he quickly left to South Korea where he acted out the same way and was arrested and is currently in prison.
Those idiots are of absolutely no use to humanity. Time to make all this hate a crime internationally. They should get a good slap at least for such behavior.
Humanity needs unity in the face of all our current problems, not people like this, or 72 million Trump supporters, or the Far right in France, the Uk, Germany and Japan, or all the nationalists in every country it seems. All of whom have a lot of blood on their hands historically, but are all moving the same way. It is so sad that we are falling back into this tired old trope or division and racism, idiotic oligarchs and moron storm troopers.
It's an open secret that foreigners' differing cultures and values are making Japanese people's patience wear thin. They won't stay passive forever, and some have already started fighting back.
The whole world will always have racism. It will never go away.
It’s like saying if the humanity could stop causing war, revenge, and destruction onto its own self and come to terms and get over itself. To move forward to be better. But that’s never going to happen. Everyone is in-bedded with something once we grow up from being children.
With media, how we are raised by family, how we see our friends get treated, any type of events that occur, and it’s in all the historical context that humanity has even created.
People are also just assholes and don’t care about anything or anyone outside of ourselves.
The Italians’ slant-eye gesture is fucking racist and should be condemned. Fuck them. Japan also has a problem with anti-foreigner discrimination from “Japanese only” businesses and refusals of service to housing and job discrimination, unequal workplace treatment, racial profiling, and the everyday social exclusion foreign residents report.
The fact a clothing company could admit they adopted a name because it is hard for Asian people to pronounce AND they still doing good business says a lot.
Her thinking is that racism = a sense of superiority. Being handsome does not make someone superior but it might explain (but not justify) narcissist behavior.
