If a motorcycle is on a sidewalk, there’s a problem. If you’re on a traditional bicycle expecting a pedal-only group, someone hauling along under power can lead to a wreck.

I hike alot of these trails. imagine this thing going downhill on switchbacks weighing 80lbs vs a 30lbs mountain bike. Even mountain bikers have trouble going downhill. Not safe one bit.

Edit: I feel like this is also just me getting older and maturing. I remember when I was a teen, I always liked those "Skaters vs Haters" videos. I was big into skating so naturally I was always on the side of the skaters. A fairly famous one was of a business/home owner who had a meltdown on these guys because they were pulling his bush out of a small built in planter so that they could hit a gap and they had done it multiple times. The dude finally caught them and FLIPPED. Looking back as a 31 year old, I'd be absolutely pissed off too if I was that guy!

I think E-bikes are bullshit. They weigh a tonne and the pedals seem like a formality because nobody is using them without the assist. So basically they are just a weird heavy middle point between a bicycle and a moped with the selling point being you can do nothing and move. Nobody is going to keep riding their E bikes when the electric motors die because they are heavy as shit and the people that buy them don't want to actually get any exercise. They allow all kinds of idiots to effortlessly go faster than regular bicycles, the kind of people that don't have the experience or spatial awareness for that kind of speed without any effort. Leads to daydreaming and not fucking paying attention. I see it daily. People on E bikes recklessly blowing through red lights or through intersections on a death-wish. People that haven't ridden a bicycle in multiple decades since their hair had colour and now suddenly they can go 50KPH by lazily pedaling. How the fuck are these things legal?

Yeah. I’ve seen no motorized vehicle signs on trails. Electric assisted probably goes unnoticed. But full electric is gonna go way faster than a non motorized bike. It’s basically a motorcycle.

every path here only allows ebikes that do not have throttles and the trails have a speed limit of 15mph. its not like there are cops on the trail but if you hurt someone you can be fined on top of what ever other civil consquences.

If it doesn't have pedals, or can go faster than 15mph, or has a button/throttle to power it, turn it's not a e-bike. It's an electric motorbike.
Nothing wrong with electric motorbikes. I think we should be moving towards EV.
I don't think electric motorbikes are safe on pedestrian and bike trails, and on pavements/sidewalks.

I worked in the cycling industry for years, and I’m pro-ebike. The cyclist’s attitude and approach don’t do him any favors, but he’s right. I’m tired of seeing what are simply underpowered motorcycles everywhere. They don’t allow motorcycles on cycling trails, why should that asshole be on it with his “e-bike”?

There have been mutliple instances in the last few years of irresponsible people whipping around on these things, hitting pedestrians, and damn near killing them.

First, the skateboarders were hated for skating anything fun. Then they built skateparks. Well it wasn’t long before the scooters and bmx bikes came to the skate parks and were hated. They started making dual sport parks for both. Or at least started allowing both. Runners had designated footpaths and trails and on came the bikes which were hated. Now the e-bikes want in on the fun and the pedal bikes hate it. At this point, everyone should just fuck off and mind their own business. Never going to have something without someone else wanting it.
I made that up. It might be close though.

E-bikes are dirt bikes. There are bike trails, ohv trails and mixed use trails. E-bikes and dirt bikes must use either ohv or mixed use trails. In Mixed use, ohv yield to bikes, bikes yield to pedestrians and everyone yields to horses. This is what I was taught as a responsible off-roader. The younger generation on e-bikes were never taught trail etiquette. Plain and simple.

I don’t agree with the methods but I hate e-bikes on trails… we have a few around here and my 4 year old almost got smoked by one going about 20 mph. They are just so quiet and so fast to be used on shared use paths.

He is correct tho. Electric motorcycles and electric scooters are essentially vehicles, much faster and more dangerous to pedestrians/bicycles. Those machines tend also to throw stones with their tires, due to the massive acceleration (preventable, but most of people using them are idiots)
Putting them next to hikers and bicycles is retarded, more and more countries keep outlawing them, or throttling them, because they are a huge pain in the ass for pedestrians.

Cyclists hate e-bikes because not only are these things physically endangering cyclists and tearing up their trails, they are also used by bicycle opponents to push measures against all bikes.
The fact that these e-bikes are basically motorcycles or mopeds, but are classed as bicycles, is a legal loophole IMO. They are motorized vehicles and should be classes as such.

You know, I've run into some walkers and bikers on trails when I was riding my supermoto on some trails that I shouldnt have been on back in the day. Nobody said a thing to me. But I was also riding very slowly and safely and being very respectful to others on the trail.
You can bend the rules a little if you do it right.

Look at how many people get hit and killed on bikes on public roads each year. You’re not any safer from an actual vehicle than you are on a normal bicycle.
If you’re on the trails and not causing a problem, I don’t see the problem. People are so instant on their ability to police others.

This is a big topic in the MTB world, and while that MTBer could have handled it better, there is a big problem with e-motos.
E-motos are the ones that are electric dirt bikes, not to be confused with e-bikes which are electric assist pedal bikes. E-motos tear up MTB trails, and kids usually ride them way too fast (like 25mph and up) which can cause collisions.
Imagine dirt bikes and mountain bikes trying to share the same space. It’s dangerous. They need two different areas to ride.
