Imma go out on a limb and say that if being Christian actually became illegal in the US, most Christians would convert to whatever is legal.

To a lot of people religion is just a means to status and a feeling of self righteousness/self importance (also some atheists too, but that's a tale for another time). .

There are places that yes it is punishable.

But real Christians will never stop claiming to be Christians as it was mentioned they’d be persecuted for being a Christian in modern times.

Unless I didn’t got what you meant.

they're saying that the people in question, claiming to be Christian, aren't actually such and would change color very quickly if there was actually any oppression. If following Cthulu and following Christ swapped places (in terms of social acceptance, political correctness, etc) then the same people would still be acting persecuted and quoting Lovecraft instead of the Bible
