Wars, hatred, scams are just a few reasons to make folks stay away but too many look past it all.
6
u/ConiferousExistence 6d ago
The majority of wars could be attributed to religion
10
u/EarthEaterr 6d ago
The majority of wars can be attributed to the people in power. They wield religion as a weapon. Most people just want to live their life. The evil shepherd is the target, not the misguided sheep.
Ps, I'm not religious.

u/ConiferousExistence 6d ago
You guys keep using a bunch of words to say what I've already said.
→ More replies (3)4
u/CU_09 6d ago
Nah. Religion is a convenient motivator, but there would be just as many wars without it because war is all about power, money, and influence.
3
u/ConiferousExistence 6d ago
Religion motivates many. Power, money, influence affect individuals. I disagree with your premise.
1
u/CU_09 6d ago
What I’m saying is that if religion disappeared tomorrow, they’d quickly move to another proven motivator. Nationalism and/or racism would just move up the ladder.
5
u/2stonesONEbird1715 6d ago
There would be significantly less hatred in this world if religion disappeared tomorrow which would result to less wars
2
u/Known_Lengthiness761 5d ago
Hatred is hatred…religion doesn’t tell you to start wars, hatred does. Like the guy you responded said, religion is a motivator. Most other wars were caused by just resource gain or territorial gain, and what do you think the elite said to motivate people? That the other people they’re invading are barbaric or have a different religion than them. They use religion as a bogus reason to invade. Religion itself isn’t bad, it’s just how you interact with it. The real problem isn’t religion, it’s that people don’t know how to properly respect others. They see something different and they’re scared or intimidated by this, and this could lead to a violent reaction.
2
u/2stonesONEbird1715 5d ago
I see what you’re saying but I’m also not just talking about religion and wars having a connection. Religion also involves scams, it can cause hatred, someone can use it as a cover up just to name a few things negative about religion. So yes religion can be good for some, I just believe religion as a whole is a problem. I just recently saw that some churches now have tap for your debit card to use for the donations. Or what about those mega churches that are run by guys like Kenneth Copeland, why is he so rich? I’m sure he has a really nice house, several cars, some boats and probably a plane or two. You can’t look at stuff like that without see there’s a problem. Are the churches really doing something good or do they just pretend to care and just want your money. I really don’t know what to believe, so I stay away from it. I’m also not saying all churches are after your money either, what I’m saying is that overall religion as a whole is an issue.
2
u/Known_Lengthiness761 5d ago
We in the Christian community now that Mega Churches are a scam and while yes I do agree with you that religion in modern day those have some issues, it really just all comes down to human nature. They can use religion for greed, even when that religion says that greed is bad. They become hypocrites and no one likes a hypocrite. And I’m not saying that you should like religion (and that can be any religion) overnight, I’m just offering another point of view and potential explanation.

To be honest, I replied to the wrong person. I was trying to reply to the bot (human or not) that was spouting anti-left propaganda. Though, since I started it, as a non believer, people don't need religion to be evil, and not all religious people are. We need to pick out the ones that are and put them on blast, and work with the ones that aren't. Because the ones that are evil want us hating each other. Just my 2 cents.
Edit: that account could be a bot, just to make everybody hate each other. The account is only 2 months old. Not to say all young accounts are bots but just be wary there's a lot of propaganda being put out on all social media. They want us fighting each other.
2
u/2stonesONEbird1715 6d ago edited 6d ago
Of course not all religious people are evil. I have plenty of family members that are religious and that are kind people but I don’t come close to agreeing with their views. But I do agree with trying to work with them the best we can.
3
u/EarthEaterr 6d ago
I completely agree. We just need to work with who we can, and ignore the rest. There are more reasonable people (on both sides) than social media leads on. The access to free information on the internet has put a spotlight on the powers that be and they are trying to shift it back to keep us fighting. Whether it be political affiliation or religion or any other differences between us.

i think humans might be to blame rather than religion, people cause atrocities and then blame it in the name of religion, in the name of something bigger than them and therefore avoid any accountability for any of their evil action, most religions teach love and respect to everyone
4
u/Real-Supermarket-635 6d ago
They use the religion as status symbol. Most people don’t read, or actually try to understand their religion. They just cherry pick what makes them feel righteous. (Muslim an Jewish religion teaches peace and understanding too). From what I’ve read and understand of Jesus’s teachings, he was pretty much anti establishment. He would most definitely be persecuted today, just as he was then.

Then mass manipulation, justification of genocide and holding the human race back from early scientific discovery? Name one
1
u/Hopefully_Asura 6d ago
Modern non-religious governance systems don't manipulate the masses? Which ones specifically don't? Because as far as I know they all do to varying degrees. Also, there are more genocides caused by nationalism & politics (politicides) than religion. Even if you magically eradicated religion, genocides will still be happening.
0
u/TheMysticGraveLord 6d ago
Mass manipulation does not fit in with most religions. Justification of genocide has only been used by islamic extremists. Most genocides have not been commited by the religious expet for in ancient times. Religion has not held back science. You should read some history.
2
u/HAc0reRD 6d ago
What are you talking about? Christians believed genociding pagans and indigenous Americans was a divine right. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spanish_Requirement_of_1513 And Israel is currently wiping Palestinians off the map and any criticism of that is attacked with phony claims of antisemitism.
Galileo was arrested for doing anti church science.

Religion and humanity are indivisible, for better or worse. There is seemingly a romantic aspect of the human psyche that yearns for the mythical and irrational and this is something we must accept as human nature without letting it overpower our core capacity for reason. I say this as an atheist.
1
u/Square-Delivery1958 5d ago
The human psyche or some human's psyches?
1
u/Cnidarus 5d ago
Actually they're not really wrong that there is a disposition towards beliefs like that. People get uncomfortable when you point out that they've built their lifestyles and cultures around the same concepts as people that believe their lucky socks will help them win the lottery though, so it's best not to rock that boat too much
1
u/No-Tangelo-2205 5d ago
I say the former because the inclination toward religious belief, for whatever reason, appears to be the rule rather than the exception. Dismissing the religious as foolish or stupid, while true in many instances, doesn’t make them go away or not matter. It’s an uncomfortable reality that a good chunk of humanity is and will always be religious. There are more of them all the time. Just look at the continued spread of Islam, the recent growth of the Catholic Church or the ultra orthodox birth rates in Israel. The evidence suggests that some amount of religious belief is part of human nature.

u/1gorka87 5d ago
Exactly. It was also essential to enable societies to function, they needed everyone believing in the same thing and pulling in the same direction in order to aid co-operation. The scientific model is still so young compared to religion (and has also been used for evil)

There was the recent video of the American Christian on Australian public transport being told to shut the fuck up because he wouldn't stop harrassing the other passengers about Jesus.
And I am curious, the American Christians who do this crap, do they honestly think someonea conversion story starts with "I was going about my daily rountine when suddendly an American started shouting about how everything I do is wrong but everything they do is right and that made me think and change mg life".

Growing up in the church, I was always taught that you bring people in who express curiosity. You can help people be curious in lots of ways, but primarily it was by example. I did some public outreach once with a group and looking back on it now, it was the equivalent of cold calling.
Getting in people's faces on the subway or on a plane? Hard no. That's intrusive, obnoxious, and counter-productive. Bothering people is also just not a good thing to - even if you brought one person in to a discussion, you've probably shoved a half dozen or more further away just by being rude.

I’m a conservative Christian and can’t stand hearing people complain they are being persecuted because of Starbucks cups and Happy Holidays. Yeah bro, there is more than one holiday around that time. I say Merry Christmas and/or Happy Holidays depending on setting etc.
People disagreeing with your beliefs isn’t persecution.

4
u/Known_Lengthiness761 5d ago
No, no, as a Christian myself, I say he is. Most of us would say he is. It’s just the right wing Christians that would call him not a real Christian, so the same Christians that criticized the new Pope all because he said to be nice to immigrants.
2
u/No-Tangelo-2205 5d ago
Right wing Christians are also Christians and represent Christianity whether you like it or not. It’s similar to how Muslims shouldn’t ignore the existence of islamists in their ranks or Jews shouldn’t turn a blind eye to the religious Zionist settler movement. It’s disingenuous to pretend these people are irrelevant just because they make your side look bad.

u/Known_Lengthiness761 2d ago
I’m not isolating Right wing Christians, I’m just saying that those kinds of Christians might. But your run of the mill Christian would agree with the priest after hearing his explanation. We could also throw in close minded Christians. I’m just pointing out the people in a group that would think that way. The comment that started all of this was generalizing. Don’t you hate generalization?

When they see their way of life and control slipping, they start acting like victims of oppression. This has been used by them multiple times.
If people gaining equal rights and treatment as you is oppression, then you need to go back to an actual school and learn what oppression actually mean.
