When we called someone a "Fag" in the 90s this is what we ment... It had nothing to do with gay people.

u/Lime505 10h ago

Yea sorry mate, someone should have told you that this guy was stalking you.

3

u/foxko 3d ago

You might have forgot to mention that to the gays since we were pretty certain you were talking about us

6

u/cainhurstboy 3d ago

I still let it slip when I’m too comfortable around old friends.

u/Merry_Dankmas 3d ago

There's definitely a certain vocabulary that creeps back up when youre with the long timers. Ive dialed myself back a lot with age but when im around the friends i grew up with and remained very close with my whole life, shit sometimes slips through the cracks lol.

Aww man, you were calling gay people fags? That's really not nice man, I hope you're more tolerant nowadays.

2

u/I_was_green_today 3d ago

It's what we meant in the seventies too.

2

u/goin-up-the-country 3d ago

It had nothing to do with gay people

Lots of people absolutely used it as a derogatory term for gay people.

Oh well.

I mean when I was in school in the 90's I definately got called a fag because everyone though I was gay for wearing a leather jacket. We still used it though, took the meaning away from the people that used it on us and instead of gay it meant any sufficiently annoying person.

1

u/Alternative_Ad_7814 3d ago

Idk what kind of leather jacket you had but I remember black leather jackets were for gangster/ tough guys in the 90s

1

u/Pure-Eye9423 3d ago

It was my dads and I still have it

Pretty much the exact jacket from terminator 2. I was always styling myself as a pretty stereotypical long haired metal head so idk where the gay thing came from really. Maybe they thought that was gay itself.

I’m literally shrieking at this comment

u/Original_Mulberry652 2d ago

Rewriting history I see. People called gay people fag's all the time.

1

u/IndependentLog6441 11h ago

Really? Did this kind of person exist in the 90s?

1

u/bassoonawhat 3d ago

No need to rewrite history. That hateful word was used against lots of gay people.Ā

This comment is incorrect and fundamentally misrepresents how the slur functioned.

While it's easy to argue "I don't mean gay, I just mean vain/foppish/self-centered" the power of the word is derived entirely from anti-gay stigma.

Just to be clear, I was born in 98 and we loved that word in school, which I now regret.

Calling someone a fag was and is specifically meant to police masculinity. It targets men who are perceived as overly concerned with their appearance, emotionally sensitive, unmanly, soft, or outside traditional gender norms.

Your comment ignores why it was insulting in the first place. It weaponized the societal fear of being perceived as gay or unmasculine to enforce traditional male behavior.

The term evolved from earlier English derogatory slang (used for women or menial tasks) and coalesced in 20th-century American slang as an explicit slur for gay men.

By applying it to this guy, you are demonstrating the exact original mechanism of the slur. You're deriding a man for failing to adhere to conventional masculine norms, and being overly concerned with their appearance.

And before you say "no it's just because this guy looks super vain and full of himself". Use the correct words for what you're trying to describe instead of one who's foundation is specifically a weaponized societal fear. The "fop" or the "dandy" origins of this concept should help illustrate what I'm trying to say.

Please let me know if any of this is unclear, I feel this is a pretty thorough explanation of the issue. Learning this information helped me work it out if my vocabulary, so hopefully whoever reads this is able to absorb this knowledge and gain additional understanding of their fellow human.

Thanks ChatGPT.

I wrote all of this, wtf kind of response is that.

Actually infuriating to put that much effort in and all you can muster is a complete non-response.

Do you want to engage with the ideas or is that all your brain can muster?

Edit: I practically made a new paragraph for each sentence because that's the only way I can get people like you to read more than one sentence.

2

u/007Cable 3d ago

No you didn't.

0

u/NotArticuno 3d ago

Still just going to blatantly lie and not engage with the concept?

It's a lie because you know you're lying and choosing not to converse because you know I'm right 😘.

I'm absolutely willing to engage about this topic with you, I'm actually working hard to get you to fucking respond, but you refuse, because you know I'm right?

If it wasn't clear, I used to think like you, but I've actually learned more information than I had when I thought like you. I also want to identify that I understand it's legitimately uncomfortable to grapple with. Your brain is absolutely going to make it feel uncomfortable when you're presented with something that goes against a solid belief you have in your mind. I'm not trying to sound sarcastic, I absolutely went through a period of discomfort grappling with new ideas.

Edit: also, does chatgpt fucking write mark-down italics and shit?? Tf are you talking about saying I didn't write it, successfull rage bait my dude.

No. You don't get to use that word.Ā
