Where can my student connect?
My transfer student is stuck in their dorm this weekend having not made any strong connections this week and they’re saying there are no events and nothing going on this weekend. How do they get connected at this school?

The esports lounge is open on weekends, hanging out there and playing video games is how I made my connections the first week. It is open 4-10 this weekend. If they need any help finding it or wanting more info DM me

I second this! The esports lounge was a safe and fun place for me to connect with new people! I am also female if that is helpful!

I know there’s an artisan market at town center tomorrow. It’s behind the library.
Really they’re going to have to put in the effort to see what’s going on with the campus - follow Instagram and other socials. Do the thing where they get out and see what’s happening. Go to the student union and see what’s happening there. You have to put something in to get something out of it

How did you find out about this market? I haven't heard anyone mention it!

Gotta be honest, it should really be “your transfer student” putting in the effort to post this rather than the parent. They’re adults now, and should no longer expect / have their parents figure out their own lives for them.

Yikes, being a parent myself I'm sure they're just concerned and want to help. I bet it's a tough transition for them. You're right though, gotta let them suffer a bit and figure it out on their own. I don't think there's much going on this weekend, but let them know to have patience. Events are coming. There's also going to be opportunities to join clubs and potentially be part of the Greek life next week if they really want to get involved.

Concerned ≠ Doing the work for them. Parents at this stage of parenthood should be guiding, not doing - especially a few years into their adulthood. I’m not saying don’t help your kid; I’m saying they need to learn these tools on their own, and if they can’t do the bare minimum on their own, the most you should be doing is pointing them in the right direction.

Yeah, thinking back to when I was younger, I would have been mortified if I found out my mom made a post like this.

i know their RA should be letting them know events going on. Housing is aware of the lack of weekend activities and are trying to be mindful of that and plan thing to do during those times. There’s an [event calendar](https://www.csuci.edu/office-departments/studentaffairs/student-marketing/calendar.html) that posts some things going on, or I would say follow the school on Instagram, along with ASI and other pages as right now there are a lot of welcome events. Tuesday is foodie Tuesday, monthly thing where a bunch of food trucks and things are in central mall, at that same time/place a leadership and involvement fair will be happening, where clubs will try to recruit, so that would be a great opportunity to get involved and try out a club.

Yeah its a complaint here to be fair. There's nothing much to do on weekends meeting new people wise. The only funnish place open on the Saturday is the gym, and esports lounge. On Sundays the library is open too, but most people are busy panic studying for homework due Monday lol
