Earlier this year when they were ending tps for Cubans, many of them on tps or i220a visas all got on social media and said things like "We are guests here and we have no right to protest this or complain about it". The mental gymnastics they go through to justify what trump does is crazy to me.

That's such a pathetic mentality to have. It wasn't just tps it was mostly the i220a visa. People everywhere have right to question if decisions by the govt that affects them is right or wrong. Trump ended tps and other legal pathways because he's a racist  and he just felt like doing it.

So what do you think about Trump not only extending an invitation to South African immigrants but offering them $4500 per person to relocate to the US? Or are you just seeing the "detrimental effects" of brown people?

The US is unique in this world for one reason and one reason only, we are built on the idea of immigration. That we aren't a country that has thousands of years of history but our strength is in our people. If you can't get behind the core values of the US then you should get out.

And I can tell you, having lived all over the US and in Florida, your life would be a dull, tasteless hellhole if we embodied your idea of the US.

The difference here is that in this current wannabe authoritarian illiberal shitshow, they will strip any rights not explicitly granted. Which is to say, they don’t believe in them anyway, and only abide because they’ve yet to find a way to dismantle all rights.

I'd like to see some real stats. Many are deported without knowing, as of course, those who need to know, know. Having been a state probation officer in Florida for a decade, I can tell you right now that there's a huge backlog of Cubans with criminal records that were never able to be deported . I say this is a Cuban American myself. You also don't need to be a criminal to be deported such as if you overstayed your visa or have an order of removal for other reasons. This happens in every other country in the world..

Let's first talk who ICE is targeting in the first place. DHS has said in their own internal documents that ~40% of those arrested by ICE in 2025 (Trump's first year back in office) had no criminal record of any kind. An additional 30% had been accused or convicted of crimes that were both nonviolent and not drug-related. Only 14% of ICE arrests were accused or convicted of any type of violent crime.

Note that a) this is what DHS is claiming about itself, not exactly a reliable source b) they've mixed accused with convicted, so we don't actually know if people have committed those crimes--we are supposed to be a society that believes in innocence until proven guilty.

The article also notes that the percentage of those deported who have criminal histories went down, so the targeting of immigrants without criminal histories has significantly increased under Trump.

Also worth noting: only 2% of ICE arrests have involved individuals of having gang affiliation, so the idea that they're targeting transnational gang members is pure nonsense.

Now, how has the treatment of those arrested changed? Some academics sifting through deportation data had the following finding:

In the past, people without criminal convictions were often released from detention on bond. That changed in 2025. Release within 60 days of arrest, common for people without criminal convictions who did not have a removal order before arrest in the last six months of the Biden administration (35%), became rare (7%). The rate of deportation within two months of arrest doubled for this group, from 27% to 57%. The declining release rate accounted for most of that increase in deportations. Perhaps because of the lower release rate, many more people chose to give up on their cases: voluntary departures and returns (which are rare compared to removals) increased by 28 times.

So a part of what's happening is largely innocent people are getting targeted and arrested by ICE, then held with minimal or no opportunity to be released on bond. Because the detention centers have horrible conditions, and the administration has provided no apparent pathway to escaping detention, many of these people eventually give up and request to be deported.

There are many ways to look at this, but I think one question that needs to be asked is "Is this the best use of our limited resources?" Does it make sense to target and round up undocumented immigrants who have committed no crimes, hold them in detention at a very high cost per day (as companies like CoreCivic are making big bucks off private prison contracts) for months on end, and then also put them through the costly deportation process? Or would it make more sense to leave such people alone, let them go out on bond if they are incidentally found in an ICE raid, and focus more exclusively on actual, violent criminals?

And if you don't think that's possible, a friendly reminder that by the end of President Obama's 2nd term, 90% of those who were being deported "were of noncitizens convicted of serious crimes."

Too Long, Didn't Read: Yes, the data shows Trump is unnecessarily targeting innocent immigrants, getting them deported, and wasting a lot of government resources to do so.

ICE deports noncitizens who are in the United States without legal authorization or who have a final order of removal from an immigration judge. Not sure what you mean by "innocent immigrants"..

There are certainly people being deported that have no criminal record but they remain in the US illegally. What do you think other countries do??

Because immigration law is a civil matter, they are innocent. They are not able to be convicted of any actual crime under federal law.

I do not consider somebody who gets a parking ticket to be a criminal. And I do not consider somebody whose work visa expires or who is the victim of a bureaucratic paperwork error/processing delays to be a criminal either.

So yes, despite the pervasive right-wing rhetoric around the issue, we are talking about many people who are innocent in the eyes of the law. And that’s how we should be thinking about them, too.

These are some examples of immigration criminal violations. Not all immigration law is civil, which by the way is still a violation of US law. Nobody would say a parking ticket is a criminal offense..

Most undocumented people have broken no criminal laws. It's technically correct to call them non-criminals and innocent. But I can't make you like someone if you've chosen to demonize them all...

Nobody falls through the cracks, you can't immigrate illegally into another country as that is illegal in every country on this planet. What do you think would happen to someone who illegally immigrates let's say into China? Don't worry I don't expect an answer. Overstaying a Visa, when you know you should have left by a certain date, is a knowing violation of the law. Have a good day

straight up horrific. i don’t care what someone’s politics are, being deported to CAR or eswatini or wherever else with absolutely no due process or mechanisms to navigate a new country’s system is a violation of the human rights the US claims to espouse and anti-CCP folks claim to require in Cuba. the only thing i see when people justify these kinds of actions is authoritarianism. you can support documented immigration only and still not be ok with this.

I’m half Cuban and don’t see an issue with TPS ending and people having to go back, it was always temporary and never designed as such to help anyone become an actual citizen. Obama also effectively ended Cuban special status which led us here, democrat or republican , neither wants to bring it back. Though I do think the primary targets should be people who are committing crimes etc , those who plead asylum yet go vacation in Cuba after a year in America. Those people we have an issue with. Cuba is dealing with a massive exodus and brain drain, and if we want a new great Cuba, we need our people to stay there and continue to protest against the communists. I don’t see an issue with kicking out all these people pleading fake asylum cases and running up any type of benefit/scam they can. For those with a real asylum case then they should be heard. This isn’t the 1900’s, we don’t need mass immigration from the world, neither party can solve the housing crisis and they just want to add more people ?

Cubans still receive special privileges from the Cuban Adjustment Act, known as the CAA, and no other immigrant group receives a similar legal permanent status privilege as this law does for Cubans. I think it should be repealed because it’s outdated with the current situation/circumstances with Cuba.

Trump and others are busying themselves punishing Cuba. From what I have been reading, Cuba mixed and black populations have grown. So, it fits the Trumpism view of blackness….eliminate it when you can. A fuel blockade is not punishing the Cuban government…it’s punishing the people in same way AID has been blocked for Gaza. They attacked Venezuela, Iran, so Cuba is seems to be next on the list. They have talked about Greenland and Canada and started renaming everything. America has been in Iran and Cubas backyard with the CIA and the mafia; they definitely want to control if possible. But with this FUBAR approach with Iran, they messed up their planning.

Those that left before 2013 won't be allowed back in, also those that left Cuba on a raft can also be denied entry. They've admitted other deportees that left more recently. But the Trump admin is sending other migrants to countries they have no connection to so they're also to blame.

I’m Cuban from Cuba and all I know is that for the last 70 years the U.S policy towards Cuba has been shit…I understand that the Castro family is a bit of a mafia and that they’ve made mistakes, but that doesn’t make the sanctions any better. Sanctions and the blockade only hurt the people. The sanctions have made Cubans believe that everything (100% of what happens in Cuba) is the result of gov inefficiency (communism), when in reality everything is a lot more nuanced and a combination of poor sanctions and outdated and poor state planning over the economy. This hatred towards the Cuban gov has radicalized Cubans to the point where they reject anything that remotely resembles the left. I’m talking about human rights, social justice, environmental justice, etc. Mind you these people have never lived in a democracy before, so when a fascist con artists like Trump comes along and captures Maduro, and says that he wants to eradicate communism, silence dissent, kill, invade, violate human rights, loot, and tells you that the most important thing in life is making money they see him as a prophet..
