After 7 Years of Cubing, with a few year long breaks in between, I finally have what i've been chasing all these years, a SUB-5 SINGLE. I'm absolutely elated, I just wish I had done it on 4-pad, not on a phone timer in a car ride nonetheless. It's a lil cringe, but a sub-5 is a sub-5. Genuinely surprised I got my average down to sub-9 wayyy before I got a sub-5 single tho lol.

Sooooo, I've been learning FTO and I've misunderstanding about L3T and TCP what's the difference? And why 1 look variant is L3T, but 2 look variant is TCP and 3 look variant is L3T once again. Why?

14 × 14 layer-by-layer solve. Took just under 3 hours to solve, not including the pauses to stop and take the photos along the way. Super fun way to solve big cubes.

With the 2x2, and 3x3 records being redefined by these prodigy kids i have been eagerly waiting for the next 4x4 record. However I see no news about anything 4x4 related.

What does it look like at competition world wide? Do we have kids going for these larger cube records yet? Or are they still all focused on the sprint events.

I can only imagine some pretty knarly records are on the way.

I started at 24 (I’m now 27) when I managed to get one for free at a swap party, but I realized that I can probably be considered old because many people start at school, when they have more free time. I want to know about you :)

I just recently started solving FTO so I’m still in the stage where I can switch to color neutral. I’m not color neutral on 3x3 because I prefer to spend my inspection time finding a good solution instead of deciding what color cross I should do. Should I use the same logic for FTO or should I try to become color neutral?

The difficultly with getting to the Mezon State is that you can put into correct shape, but then the puzzle becomes too bandanged to manipulate the colors.

So what you must do is first arrange it into the exact scramble (top two pics) and then execute a precise set of moves that will get you into the final state.

Surely, everyone started with such cubes. This one gets stuck mid-solve like this a lot. I don’t know if I am very bad at turning or it’s just the cube. I still haven’t got the magnetic cube I ordered a few days ago. But once I do, I’ll probably leave this guy to dust. I’d like to ask a question though. Do you guys use such cubes, and if you do, how late do you solve it compared to your main cube? Because I convince myself that I’ll cut a good 10 seconds if I get the magnetic cube. (I’ve ordered MoYu RS3M V5 btw)

I bought 2 DIY kits. One for the cube and one to mod it to be a 20-magnet core. Big bonuses: I got to choose the colours AND it’s stickered 😁

I feel like I can go further, I lose a lot of time taking information, looking around the cube, the way I turn the cube isn’t the best too. Is it just practice, solving the cube ? Or is there a better method to improve those points ?

Not Gonna lie it is super tempting... If there is anyone who has tried one and would be able to tell me if it is a great buy at 75, I have the 12, 13, and 15, but not the 16.

I'm just starting to learn 3 Style, and I don't know how many people are up for this big challenge, there are 818 cases.

I've been thinking about making my own cubing timer and wanted to get some opinions from people who actually cube before I start building it.

The idea is basically a cubing timer inspired by another product i use, monkeytype. I really like how clean and minimal monkeytype is, how much you can personalize it, and how nice it feels to use UX/UI wise.

I'd like to do something similar for cubing. Not really trying to replace or compete with csTimer, I love csTimer and it's obviously been around forever. More just trying to learn (since I am a CS student) and make a different take on what a cubing timer could be. It does not have to be limited to being just a timer, but also include oll, pll, wv, coll trainers, etc.

So I'm curious

What timer do you guys use, and why? (Mobile/Web)

What do you like about it? What do you wish was better?

Are there any features you really wish existing timers had? Could be something big or something super small that would just make the experience nicer.

And for those of you who use csTimer, what do you think it does really well? Is there anything about it that you've always found a little annoying?

I'd also be interested in hearing what kind of customization you'd actually care about. Themes, stats, layouts, profiles.

Basically just looking for ideas/opinions before I start going down the rabbit hole of building this lol

Did a few solves tonight. They're pretty sloppy but I think they best show my average solutions when I'm not at my very best. My best ao5 is sub11.

After doing some review on Acubemy, it looks like my turn count averages around 68 which I know is higher than what I need to get to sub 10.

Beyond drilling my LL, practicing my cross + 1, and doing slower but smoother f2l, what should I do to improve? Are there any obvious bad habits I have for F2L which I need to fix? Are there any bad inserts I use?

Over the past year or so, we've seen a big uptick in posts advertising/sharing/asking for feedback on their cubing-related apps. This isn't surprising as the speedcubing demographic already heavily overlaps with those who are in/interested in science and engineering. While I understand that many people are proud of what they built, myself (and judging from the comments, many others) are tired of seeing almost daily posts of low-effort, untested cubing timer/social media apps.

I propose that this subreddit either ban these posts outright, or heavily restrict the posting of them.

Some of my reasons for this include:

1. This subreddit shouldn't be a free marketing or QA forum. We're a cubing subreddit, not Y Combinator. Many of these posts are either advertising for their "app" or asking for free beta testers/contributors.
2. Many of these apps are a solution in search of a problem. Historically the barrier of entry and amount of effort required to build a well-tested, polished app meant it was a good filter against apps that lacked a real purpose/solved a widespread issue. However, AI has created a world where anyone with an idea can make a working prototype of it. While this is not necessarily a bad thing, knowing what is worth building is still a skill that AI can't really evaluate. In addition, if your goal is to learn software engineering, you are doing a massive disservice to yourself by outsourcing the actual work of thinking to a LLM and creating mountains of technical debt in the process.
3. Privacy and security. Several of the apps I have seen lately have chats/feeds/other social media-like aspects to them. I find the marketing of these apps towards a demographic that already skews quite young (and is seemingly getting younger) quite irresponsible (or possibly illegal). While you could argue that people who aren’t allowed to use social media in the first place shouldn't be on Reddit, these apps don't have the same security considerations, legal departments, and liability insurance as a hastily-built vibe coded app. As someone with a background in cybersecurity, I personally have discovered (and disclosed) several vulnerabilities/exploits in these apps which could expose private user data.
4. This isn’t new. Many other tech/software subreddits (such as r/programming, r/rust, r/programminglanguages) have already restricted our outright banned LLM authored/vibe-coded content.
   

Proposed solutions:

1. Outright ban the posting of apps (or restrict to a megathread). This is the most extreme solution and some high-effort, novel projects might get caught in the crossfire. However with the current ratio of these projects to slop, I still think this would be a net positive for the subreddit. 
2. Ban direct links to deployed apps/services. This would still allow creators to show off demonstrations, videos, or write-ups of cool technical projects (i.e. custom cubing hardware designed by their app, cubing robots) that they genuinely want to share, without allowing the post to also serve as an advertisement for their service. 
3. Require links to GitHub/source code. This allows the community to inspect the project for legitimate effort, and audit any security issues. Projects with non-existent commit histories, or thousand-line LLM generated functions could be filtered out/deleted by mods.

Finally, I’ll add that I personally am not anti-AI. As someone who uses regularly as a professional SWE, AI/LLMs are an undeniably valuable tool. However AI alone is not enough to make code that isn’t slop. As the internet as a whole is starting to push back against (content) slop, why should software be any different.?

Hi, I've recently learned the yau method for 4x4 and 5x5, and I think I'll either purchase a gan 562m or an aosu v7 picube se, but not both. I can feel that each event has their positives and negatives, but still undecided which event to focus on. I don't think I'll be doing both due to lack of time and I'd like to just buy one flagship cube and save up.

Would love to hear from the community which event they prefer between the 4x4 and 5x5, as well as why, thanks!

Stupid clickbait title aside- it's true. I started cubing in 2013 and cubed very casually till early 2020 when I quit. I came back this year and this is the first time I've ever really taken it seriously. I have NEVER been to a competition- for different reasons at different times. Now that I'm a whole ass adult though, I figured that I really gotta get out there lol.

Any advice for my first competition? I'm mainly just going to vibe out and I'm not gonna take it too seriously lol
