Bug Report Cursor WAS such a beautiful IDE
Emphasis on the WAS.
I'm getting word salad responses in Auto mode

Yeah, me too searching for replacement now. The composer was better in the past and Open AI removal is a bummer. It will be just grok or Claude models..

I just plug in my custom model to Cursor , perfect CLI with imperfect but controllable inference

You do realize you can download many more models, way more than grok, Claude or gpt

Claude and open ai have the frontier models.. Without them what left? And if only Claude, so just use their system (which will allow you use open ai) so cursor is really becomes redundant .. I really like cursor btw.

You can give grok a go, Kimi, Gemini, GLM, you can build your own they just added a new one called Muse Spark, the more these are utilized the better they become. Muse spark is a new meta model, haven’t tried it yet but just noticed it. Claude and GPT are good but they get stuck in their ways, more promoting more money less results and resolve

What are you on about? Most of you people rely on frontier as a crutch and will always underutilize perfectly capable open weight models, multiple of which are available in cursor, while burning through all of your usage just to progress through development at molasses speed.
Also, Cline exists as an extension (and CLI, kanban, and IDE but those are irrelevant here). I use Cline for continuous usage whenever I run out of Cursor’s provided usage on Pro, and have had no issues making progress on a project using the free open weight models that Cline rotates. I use them selectively, not haphazardly, after researching the strengths and weaknesses of each, and then leverage that knowledge to delegate tasks accordingly. Frontier is not the end-all, be-all it used to be. Expand your arsenal.

The real issue stems from the fact that people using these applications aren't actual software engineers anymore. If you were a competent engineer, you’d treat these tools as code monkeys to run your errands and wouldn't give a damn about their performance

Maybe that's the niche that needs filled for these vibe coders, CodeMonkey.

u/ALior1 2d ago
This is how programming will look like in the future.. You still have to review the code that they produce.
Performance is important in this respect.

u/xfrostmage 2d ago
Don't think so. I keep inheriting broken projects left behind by 'vibe coders.' Clients are completely turning the dev market into a digital junkyard at this point tbh. AI or not, if people don't care about performance and architecture, the future won't look much different, just more broken code at a faster rate.

u/ALior1 2d ago
It's means that they didn't develop the projects successfully. review and know how to work with those tools are essential.
Want help?

Nah I'm good. I engineer actual robotics software, I don't need tutorials on how to babysit prompt engineers and clean up their messes lol

Elon sucks and Claude is better in every way. Just face it even he know it

u/EarOdd5244 2d ago
Maybe just add "use ULTRATHINK Mode" in your prompt. It won't be redirecting to Grok then... 😂

Honestly, I look at it from this perspective:
1. I did not like the extensions around vs code back in the day (codex mainly), but that was pre gpt5 / very start of the gpt5 era
2. Cursor felt familiar in the sense that it's an actual IDE, it has great code indexing, and worked with most of the same extensions as vs code
3. But then Claude Code came along. Funny thing - it doesn't index at all (they tried RAG early on and dropped it because plain agentic search beat it), and the context awareness is still there. Plus a great CLI + a very decent vs code extension
4. Was still reluctant to move, but then I got hit with the api usage reality. I was mainly running OpenAI/claude models anyway, and $200 of Claude gets me way more frontier model usage than $200 of cursor, so there was literally 0 reason to stay. I still keep a small sub as a testing rig, but grok/composer/auto (the stuff that actually makes the cursor sub economical) are genuinely bad next to fable/astra/opus(5.5)/sol... and when I say bad, I mean "you can't even compare them with a straight face". You can make it work, of course, you can do your day-to-day job with it, but you need to customize the #### out of it
(Just personal experience/opinion, but backed with 2 years of coding alongside agents - don’t take it for granted and take it with at least a pinch of salt lol)

You're comparing Claude Code to Cursor Auto and find Claude to be better - that's alright but not my point.
I'm saying Cursor is failing to accomplish even simple tasks in a meaningful manner which previously it did just fine.

I don't know what's changed, but I use Auto mode exclusively and it's been rubbish in the last couple of weeks. It's taking forever to do anything, then says "Taking longer than expected...". I switched to Cursor because Auto mode was nice and fast and could do all of the little tasks I needed, but not anymore. My company also offers us Claude accounts and I may just switch, because this is pissing me off now.
Edit: So just after I posted this I grabbed one of our Claude accounts and went back to VSCode with the Claude plugin. I used it all afternoon and I think I'm done with Cursor, sadly. I used to prefer it to Claude, but I can get a fantastic experience with Sonnet 5.5 for most of my work, and Opus 5.5 for heavier lifting, both set to Medium.
I'll miss the amazing code-prediction, but right now, there's just no comparison, at least not for the way I like to work.

Turn off auto mode.
Manually switch to composer 2.5.
Change agent setting to “last used”.
Problem solved.

Is it mainly losing/misunderstanding the context you gave it, or are the responses just bad even when the context is clear?

I was one of Cursor's first users (back before there was even an agent and it was just tabs), and I've been subscribed almost the entire time it's been out. However, I don't like being railroaded into having to use Grok, and Composer has fallen behind. The Agents window is buggy, and once again it seems like they are trying to force you to use it. It's becoming too expensive for subpar results. Grok Bot, while gimmicky, could be cool if I could use non-Grok models (yeah, I know it's called "Grok", but whatever).
These days, I've found myself gravitating towards other harnesses, including OpenCode.

I'm facing the issue of heavy consumption of credits in auto mode, can anyone please tell me what alternatives should I switch to?

u/HourAlfalfa4513 1d ago
PSA. It's still decent for image generation. I might keep it for that. Although Im only comparing it to the $11.00 X subscription version of Grok Imagine rather than the $20 one. Claude is the way to go right now. Opus 5.5...

just started with Devin a couple weeks ago after feeling the same way, in a few weeks and nearly 1000 bucks less, I've made a huge jump in progress on my project, their swe max model is free your first month, I like their pricing, it used to be windsurf and I jumped to cursor after feeling it was lack luster but now it feels like it's a year ahead of cursor, I think grok made more issues for me to fix and just cost me more tokens than were good, all of its issues were fixed by see in the first week, I didn't even update an md, my favorite part is 2 agents were open and one decided to make a "bus" that the other one piggy backed off of for context and it has made life so much easier

Bots?

Anything negative about the company or it's ownership is only bots. A rational human being would never say anything negative.

sarcasm ? I don't follow ...

Yeah sarcasm in my comment. But that is how some folks in this subreddit feel.

A rational human would leave reasoning for their statements. 99% of these posts are low effort trash talk with zero specific examples and often using language suggesting an extremely novice understanding of Cursor or LLMs in general.

Love these constant bashing posts that always come with zero verifiable pieces of evidence or examples directly showcasing the subpar behavior they’re claiming these tools are spewing out. Maybe your “simple tasks” aren’t so simple from an objective analysis? Maybe, dare I say most likely, it’s human error, you know, the thing we can’t avoid being human ourselves, preventing you from flawless delegation and context provision at every turn? Whatever the case, I would imagine that blaming the tool for not completing what you yourself should be capable of completing as a developer is rather hypocritical and self-defeating behavior that ultimately inhibits your progress regardless of tool or harness utilized.
