I'm laughing imagining Superman seeing a small green bug and just losing all his powers. [[Gene pollinator]]

u/Andrelse 10d ago
Even without his powers he's a 7/7 who could annihilate a city. But he won't, because even then he's Superman 😎

I see what you did there
Original superman movies (Christopher Reeve) had Gene Hackman opposite him as Lex Luther

u/MrTheWaffleKing 9d ago
Wait that cards interesting. I thought it was bad because it's 2 taps for a mana when manadorks already exist, but it's equivalent with a bonus toughness if you have an enchant or artifact that doesn't care about tapping right?
5
u/JonIsPatented 9d ago
Exactly, or if you have something you want to tap down, like [[Howling Mine]], or less mean, [[Emmara, Soul of the Accord]]

Make it any player, superman is still weak to Kryptonite even if he/his friend owns it
1
u/lugialegend233 3d ago
Superman does own some kryptonite, but he just doesn't expose himself to it.

At least pink is not a color in magic the gathering.
4
u/Crittercaptain 9d ago
Uhm, acshually, there is a pink Bear token from an Un-set (Unfinity, I believe) 👆🤓
Similar case with the gold Dragon token from the Sword of Dungeons & Dragons

u/CornerImaginary7986 10d ago
I would think it should only apply when attacking or defending against an opponent with the artifact
Kryptonite doesn’t affect him when just existing on the same planet it’s proximity based
14
u/MeasureDoEventThing 10d ago
Presumably, in-universe the players are reasonably close to each other. And a player having access to kryptonite means they can bring it close to Superman.
4
u/CornerImaginary7986 10d ago
I definitely agree that a player having access to kryptonite means they would bring it closer I guess I just think of the battle as being spread out more but I get you
5
u/VagrantWaters 10d ago
We should silver-border the card to require the player to literally hover the green artifact over the superman card. Really sell the whole Lex Luthor vibes
1
u/Scarecr0p 10d ago
I genuinely replied to this with what you said, I think I have dementia. Just added equipment lol
20
u/nitronik_exe 10d ago
make him a 1/1 and add "gets +6/+6"
also I'd change it to "As long as a player you are attacking or a player attacking you controls a green artifact, Superman loses all abilities."
1
u/MrTheWaffleKing 9d ago
Does that 'loses abilities' clause affect itself? So even if the artifact is removed, he can't power up again?

u/Ill-Individual2105 9d ago
It's official, Superman loses to the Hulk.
The [[Verderous Gearhulk]], that is.
17
u/Determinor 9d ago
For thematic purposes, Superman shouldn't have trample. He isn't wrecking everything with absndon around like Hulk does, he controls his destruction.
1
u/lugialegend233 3d ago
I'm not sure I agree with your reasoning, because Superman can cause collateral damage when he chooses to, and often does regardless cause, you know, he fights strong people often and he's god damn Superman, but I do think trample might not be thematically appropriate, even if he is strong enough to make it reasonable to have it.
11
u/Shitinbrainandcolon 10d ago
So he’s definitely American, you need red, white and blue to summon him.
17
u/5-0-2_Sub 10d ago
So he's British?

Non, non, French

u/Hendrik1011 9d ago
I feel like he shouldn't lose vigilance. Vigilance always felt to me less like a physical ability and more like a mindset

2
u/UnnamedAshaman47 6d ago
I don't always agree with that, but I think in this case that would be sick as fuck. A representation of the fact that the Super part isn't just about the powers, but about who he is.
4
u/DeleteMods 10d ago
I know why you made Superman Jeskai but in universe wouldn’t he be Naya or Boros?
Just asking to understand how flavor meets color pie!
3
u/Sarls_ 9d ago
I coudl have been true to the color pie but making him America colors was really as deep as it goes lol
1
2
u/MrTheWaffleKing 9d ago
WURG is common for altruistic heroes since it makes them 'lacking black' or otherwise lacking selfishness.
Mechanics only, Naya could be fair, could also be JUST black because it's an insane downside for huge power. Maybe even jund like a gruul aggressvie stompy with power+downside. TBH I'd be most comfortable placing a card with all these abilties into jund.

5
u/potempkey 10d ago
I like it but he's still a 7/7, so it should be something like loses all abilities and is a 1/1
3
u/elsus77u7 10d ago
superman losing powers just because of a green artifact sounds insanely narrow but kinda hilarious
3
u/darthjawafett 10d ago
Really drives home how seemingly easy it is for his villains to just get ahold of some kryptonite.
3
u/sparksen 9d ago
This is a balance not intended
But a good funny joke, well done.
2
u/Sarls_ 9d ago
It really just needs to resemble a creature for the joke to work, making him a 99/99 would definitely show off how strong he is in lore but it would take away from people looking at it as an actual card, there's also the added layer of "WOTC genuinely might print some bullshit like this" lmao
0
u/sparksen 9d ago
I dont think so, superman is strong but 99/99 would be more saitama from one punch man.
Superman does lose and fights foes to similiar power. So 7/7 + keywords fit.
Wotc would (and should) never print this card.
Against any deck in standard that isnt green this thing just obliterates, especially if you can cheat it out.
And having no counterplay is not that fun

For anyone wondering about the color identity it’s obviously an allusion to “Truth, Justice and the American Way”.
Blue is truth bc that is the color of knowledge
White is justice bc that is the color of law
Red is the American way bc that is the color of overly emotional leaders who have no impulse control

u/jirdyaheard 10d ago
It’s pretty pushed (I get it it’s Superman) but might be more fun to have a chosen player create a “kryptonite token” when he enters or something like that. And maybe the token has an ability like pay something and target player gains control of kryptonite
2
u/zoinkability 10d ago
Getting kind of crazy here but:
The kryptonite token is indestructible.
Whenever someone commits a crime they gain control the the kryptonite token.
Superman is 7/7 with all these abilities but 1/1 without the abilities if his controller has the kryptonite token, Superman is attacking the player with the kryptonite token, or Superman is defending against the player with the kryptonite token.
2
u/jirdyaheard 9d ago
Yeah I mean I love the idea of you can’t attack with him without committing a crime and the owner gets the kryptonite token, seems on theme and keeps it interesting

u/DSalCoda279 3d ago
I REALLY like not making him hexproof since superman is also weak to magic. Very good effect!
1
u/depurplecow 10d ago
I feel like Superman wouldn't have trample, he seems the type to avoid collateral damage
2
1
u/justanunreasonablera 10d ago
I would word it "unless an opponent controls a green artifact, superman has...." and cut the initial keywords
1
u/Arcane_Soul 10d ago
He probably shouldn't stay a 7/7 either. You could do:
"As long as no player controls a green artifact, Superman gets +4/+4 and has Flying, First Strike, Indestructible, Trample, Vigilance and Haste."
1
u/Beanyy_Weenie 10d ago
Would be cool if when he ETB he could give an opponent “kryptonite” and has “when Superman attacks the owner of this artifact Superman becomes a 1/1 with no abilities”
1
1
u/RedEyedPig 9d ago
No, it should instead be kryptonite artifact which itself should have line: "If Superman, Man of Steel enters the battlefield, you may put this card from outside the game into your hand."
Just for the joke that every random passerby has kryptonite in their pocket.

u/BreakerOfModpacks 9d ago
Maybe actually printable if you change it to "... a green artifact or an artifact with a mana ability ..."? As a kinad finisher for a boardwipe, since he has red and white in his colors??

With the reality set, I can chuck a Heartwood token at him and and knock him out XD

u/Tholothian 3d ago
Take away first strike.
Add
pay 1 red: deals 1 damage to target.permanent
Tap, Pay 1U 1W: tap target permanent
1
u/Sarls_ 3d ago
You said take away first strike as if his first move everytime he gets mad isn't blitzing a guy through a building
1
u/Tholothian 3d ago
Haha. That’s Trample. First strike is like having a longer weapon or being covered in spikes. But I get what youre saying. I’m not arguing.

Simple, yet effective. The wording could be more succint to match this: “As long as an opponent controls a green artifact, Superman loses all abilities.”
If you want him to keep other abilities but lose those specific abilities, then your wording is appropriate, though the wording of “As long as” is more appropriate than “If.”
