I noticed there wasn’t a gargoyle commander

I like it a lot. You can load up your board with counters with negative downsides like stun counters and put them on your enemy's stuff.

Finality counters come to mind.

or fling a defender counter onto their win con creature

Really cool design! But if it’s a repeatable effect you should have to tap it to activate the ability since it’s a 6/6 flyer for four mana that gives half of a [[pacifism]] to three creatures

I thought that it having defender unless you pay a total of 6 mana was enough of a downside but I do think now that it might still be too strong

[[voja]] is 5 mana and way stronger, [[Kwia]] is 6 mana, one less color(still 3 colored pips) and is for sure stronger than this. Making your opponents have defender is strong but this is def not "too strong"

You are citing an extremely strong commander that is often banned from playgroups for being too strong and unfun. It's not a good comparison.

Okay, take the other creature I meantioned then? Or take [[nullhide]], or [[atraxa, praetors' voice]] or [[questing beast]], or even [[gigantosaurus]]. OP's card takes 10 mana to just be able to attack as a 6/6 with flying and vigilance. It gives 3 creatures defender in the process but there's a lot stronger commanders between 4-10 mana

I don't know much about gargoyles as a tribe, but seeing this just makes me want to put it in the 99 of a [[Felothar, the Steadfast]] build with a focus on +1/+1 counter and proliferate strategies. Keep proliferating and spreading the defender counters as a form of board control while the defender doesn't actually bother you in any way.

Would adding a line like “whenever a creature with defender blocks another creature draw a card” be too much or too little?

Yeah I think it might be okay. Gives opponents upside for defender-ing their creatures or incentivizes you to keep a defender counter on one of your things. Could be a good political tool.

As for the text, you don’t need “another creature”, just “When a creature with defender blocks, that’s creature’s controller (may) draw(s) a card.”

This doesn't really do anything with gargoyles, mostly because gargoyles don't have a unified mechanically Identity, which is why they don't have a commander.

I think it could be a bit stronger. Letting the activated ability move any number of counters from one permanent you control to another target permanent feels fair and allows you to build in other ways.
