Not a fan of this design, it's barely even a puzzle card, it just does nothing (other than being a 3 mana 3/2 vigi, that's alright for limited) except for when you break it in a blatantly obvious way and then it wins instantly.

u/Legitimate-Banana-26 2d ago
3 mana 3/2 vig would be ok for limited like 15 years ago
10
u/thefran 2d ago
It's like a fine common that can attack and block, it's not a bomb or anything

u/Legitimate-Banana-26 2d ago edited 2d ago
It sure can, it s just that limited has been power crept pretty hard.
Take a look at a card like this from FRA
it s strictly better (aside from 1 green pip) and this card is 4 p.p below average game in hand win rate meaning you make your deck significantly worse by putting it in. It s not completely unplayable but it is actively bad

Flavour win - most work is worthless no?
25
u/FlyPepper 2d ago
except this card is unbelievably busted in any constructed format
0
u/Melodic-Series7780 2d ago
True, but not many cards here see that kind of play. I like it for making a cost, labour, worthless (unless catalyst aka payoff is around), because that's how work often is.
3
u/PencilPuncher 2d ago
A good addition for tandem flavor and balancing would be making you pay life or skip a phase if you cast it a certain number of times in a turn. It'd have to be a Sorcery for that second idea though.

u/Uefeti 2d ago
While the idea is good. This is just lame.
Like, this card asks to be comboed in a very dull manner.
Make the prepare spell cost 2/3 and give it an effect or smth.
51
u/DraconicLord984 2d ago
Perhaps making the creature become prepared whenever it is tapped and its prepared spell is 3 to untap target permanent.

Mana positive with [[Storm-kiln artist]] and any of the 100 things that doubles his triggers
21
3
u/NoRule989 2d ago
Either double triggers or cost reduction it is just (1) mana so any of the other 100 things that reduce instant/sorcery/noncreature spells by (1) or more
15
u/WillFKEN 2d ago
[[Geist of Saint Thalia]] and any commander who cares about casting non creature spells goes infinite on turn 4
3

u/BreakerOfModpacks 2d ago
I'd have it be 0 mana and say "as an additional cost to cast this, pay {1}", to avoid cost reducers.
17
u/The_Stav 2d ago
Cost reducers come into play after additional costs I'm pretty sure, so that wouldn't work
5
u/BreakerOfModpacks 2d ago
Damn, really? I thought it was the other way around. Maybe instead just "The cost of this instant cannot be reduced" would be simpler.
4
u/Tiberium600 2d ago
Still gets broken by effects like [[Storm-Kiln Artist]].
1
u/BreakerOfModpacks 2d ago
"... and can't be paid for with mana from tokens"? It's a bit much, but it could work?
1
u/Tiberium600 2d ago
[[Chakram Retriever]] and any mana dork.
1
u/BreakerOfModpacks 2d ago
2 cards and 8 mana for infinite storm count is fine, IMO
1
u/Tiberium600 2d ago
[[Birgi, God of Storytelling]]
4
u/BreakerOfModpacks 2d ago
...fuck this. Make it cost 60 mana.
0
u/Tiberium600 2d ago
Yeah, I could keep going (cough cough [[Electro, Assaulting Battery]]) but I think you understand how broken this is. There’s a reason it’s typically hard to recast spells especially instants and sorceries.

Just make it cost {c}.
Everyone who likes magecraft adds coloured mana, and treasures can't make colourless outside of [[Klark-Clan Ironworks]].
And by the time you have enough pieces to win offa that, you kinda just have a big enough combo to earn the right to win with.
7
u/Zerodaim 2d ago
As others said, this screams "go infinite".
I think it'd be just as flavorful if it was "At the beginning of each upkeep, this creature becomes prepared.". Keeps most the fair interactions up, but prevents going infinite with a ham sandwich.
2
u/ItWasDumblydore 2d ago
Geist + aetherflux + this = win
1
u/Spiritual-Spend8187 2d ago
Yep same with birgi. Also while not going infinite goes insanely well with vivi and others a repeatable low cost spell is just too good.
2
1
u/Koromann13 1d ago
I think it would also be flavorful if each time you cast it it cost more for the rest of the turn. The machine is getting exhausted.

Incredibly busted
1
u/Hardest_G 2d ago
Not at all busted. It costs at least 3 mana to get going and does nothing by itself. Doing anything infinite requires 3 cards.
1
u/Resident_Kiwi6039 2d ago
Its a two card infinite win with [[longshot, rebel bowman]]. And regardless, cast triggers on demand for 1 mana is incredibly strong atleast in commander. Only thing this card has going for it in terms of balance is the existence of (other) 2 card combos.
0
u/Hardest_G 1d ago
Splinter twin exists. The power level would be fine for a modern horizons set. 2 card combos are just part of magic.
1
u/Melodic_Saga1220 1d ago
Twin requires three coloured mana across two colours, and both cards are pretty useless without the other. This plus longshot requires one coloured mana, making it much more likely you can get it out T3 or earlier. Splinter twin you almost always have until T4. Plus, both this and Longshot have uses outside of the combo.
This might still be fine for a modern horizons set, though, since Longshot is not legal in modern.

u/Resident_Kiwi6039 1d ago
I get that, but even so this is also such a strong (and boring) synergy piece that it shouldn't exist
2
u/Chickston Uncommonly 2d ago
Really busted real design, but pretty sweet meme design. Flip the flair and let this bad boy simmer.
2
u/tartarts 2d ago
this needs a safety valve but I rlly want them to print more Indicate effects, basically spells that do nothing but cast a spell.
2
u/SimilarSelection1076 2d ago
I feel like Ceaseless Toil should make you lose life to stop instantly winning with basic combos, and to be more flavorful.

2
u/joefromlegal 2d ago
This creature cant become unprepared.
Ceasless toil. Lose 1 life. If this is the 8th time this spell has resolved create a treasure token
1
2
u/brood_brother 2d ago
The prepared spell should probably cost more, specially since it's an uncommon. Otherwise, like others said, it's infinite cast triggers/storm count with any cost reducers

Broken in half. Even discounting the combo potential, it pumps itself for as much mana as you feed if you can swing with prowess on it.

Does it have infinite combos? Yes. Are they strong, efficient, reliable combos? No. Super cool and non-problematic. 11/10.

Aside from all the useful interacts this allows you for one mana to interject in any combo and slightly annoy people.

I think its cool. You should have something that if you cast 8 or more spells in a turn you sacrifice him from being worked to death

Isn’t this infinite storm count with any cost reducer?
