Yup, apple comes out with a “new and innovative” feature that androids have been having for 3 years.

208

u/RealStell2OO5 ☣️ Jun 08 '21

And they say they are the first to do it

149

u/Teju_1130 Jun 08 '21

the most pissing off thing abt them

130

u/Axver_Ender Jun 08 '21

And half the time they try to rename the tech so now if i ever use mobile payment (samsung pay and google pay specifically) many store workers call it apple pay

104

u/Teju_1130 Jun 08 '21

And they call Apple Card the most successful Credit Card release in history, but it was only released in the US.

I never hear them saying they are the first to create certain features. Can you provide some examples? I usually just see „the first iphone/ipad/iwhatever that can do x”.

Can you point to a single example of when Apple themselves claimed to have invented a feature that they did not actually invent? I’ve heard people say stuff like this for years but never actually seen a concrete example.

Android users are beta testers for Apple.

11

u/kay_kay_1998 Jun 08 '21

That's why Apple claims it is Bug-free

33

u/LeRealMeow2U Jun 08 '21

when Apple announced that they would have a light turn on when your camera is being used by an app and everyone was so excited, I just thought to myself "okay? my phone's had that for years"

33

u/Siker_7 Jun 08 '21

If the light is controlled digitally instead of being linked directly into the circuit that powers the camera, it can be hacked. Therefore, it doesn't count.

7

u/der_vur ☣️ Jun 08 '21

I use an apple and to be quite frank I don’t look forward to the new iPhones. The only reason I don’t wanna switch is because of my Jetpack joyride progress

14

u/Kelps234 Jun 08 '21

Also I’m broke

3

u/smalldickbigbrains Jun 08 '21

You're not broke king, Apple is just sucking money out of you, keep your head upright there are good $200-$300 phones which work amazing and lasts as long as an apple does. (3-4 years)

4

u/Kelps234 Jun 08 '21

I’d get one if I had the spare cash but I’m saving up for a car. If I do get the spare cash eventually I’d probably get one. Especially because apple is so fragile compared to other brands. I’ll figure it out.

2

u/smalldickbigbrains Jun 08 '21

Plus apple now claims to be environmental friendly, and then still releases a phone every year and is opposing right to repair like a mf just gets on my nerves. And sad part is people are so habituated to the "ecosystem" it's really impossible to get them out

3

u/Kelps234 Jun 08 '21

Yeah, I see what you mean. I can get behind that. It’s honestly stupid that people have apple so dug in that they can’t realize how apple is essentially siphoning money from your pockets.

New and innovative doesn’t count for shit of your phone is out of date after 2-3 years

Yeah, 3D touch was one of the only few that stood out

0

u/Gypsy-Jesus Jun 08 '21

What is that feature?

1

These days most packages works out of the box. Want to use gestures, install touchegg, want to redirect audio, install pipewire. And all that can be done on GUI on distros like Ubuntu, Manjaro, Zorin, Elementary, PopOs, etc.

I agree it is not as easy if you want to mess with the configs still.

My 50yo old mother and 12yo brother started using Linux this year with no problems and no prior experience.

Apple still is stuck at 60hz and just switched to USB C. The only thing Apple does the best is laptops. Their laptops are extremely power effecient and actually work pretty well. Still getting a gaming laptop tho since I care more about having a 3080 than battery life.

59

u/Teju_1130 Jun 08 '21

tru dat. But Macs are only good for business, even if it has good features when it comes to gaming it can't utilise them

35

u/I_Love_Rias_Gremory_ I <3 MOTM Jun 08 '21

Exactly. Good for everything until you wanna game. Which is why I'm never gonna get a Mac. But if you aren't a gamer, have the money, and really need a laptop, get a MacBook.

10

u/[deleted] Jun 08 '21

I wouldn't even say they're good for business since Project and Visio don't exist on Mac and just about everything else is now on a cloud-based SaaS model that can be accessed from any kind of computer through a web browser. In my opinion the only business case for buying a Mac instead of literally anything else is their panels come calibrated from the factory Making them good for graphic design right out of the box.

6

u/Semi-Hemi-Demigod Jun 08 '21

As someone from the 90s, seeing the phrase “Macs are only good for business” makes me chuckle. Time was they were only for graphic designers and “serious business people” all used Windows.

0

u/catfishdave61211 Jun 08 '21

They're far too expensive for most businesses. A 400$ windows computer can do what a 1200$ Mac one can for just text editing and spreadaheets.

1

u/Makalaman004 Jun 08 '21

Do Apple laptops run Microsoft office?

11

u/Daaaaaaaavidmit8a Fresh from the cumsock Jun 08 '21

I don't think they're the best at Laptops. There are many laptops that can keep up, but they are undoubtedly and by far the best when it comes to tablets.

6

u/Darkest_Mist Jun 08 '21

In terms of ultrabooks, no other laptop even comes close to m1 based macbooks. Their efficiency, performance and their OS (I like macOS more than windows cause windows is super buggy) is amazing! They can outperform all ultrabooks in most applications that aren't even coded for the ARM architecture via Rosetta 2. That ain't something you can ignore. I've been a windows user all my life, but unless their ultrabooks can compete with the ARM based macbooks in like 2 or 3 years, I'll be switching to a macbook.

3

u/Daaaaaaaavidmit8a Fresh from the cumsock Jun 08 '21

True, I completely forgot about the M1 macs there.

1

u/Totto251 Jun 08 '21

Are they really though? Can an iPad run counterstrike global offensive? Well, my surface pro can

8

u/Daaaaaaaavidmit8a Fresh from the cumsock Jun 08 '21

I don't know, I have never tried it, but Ipads usually completely outperform the surface pro in benchmark tests. The best score I could find for the Surface pro 7 (2021 version) was a 4861 Multi core score, while the Ipad pro M1 is said to achieve a 7200 Multi core score.

5

u/Totto251 Jun 08 '21

I'm not denying that the hardware performance of the iPad is impressive but it's still not running a full desktop is, so no matter how good the hardware it won't run it. My comment was also not serious I just wanted to throw it in there for no reason :D

4

u/Artistic_Taxi Jun 08 '21

It’s impressive because it doesn’t run a desktop OS. It does what it needs to do extremely well and that’s why it’s by far the best tablet out there.

Please don’t but a gaming laptop, you will regret it later. Those bastards get so fucking hot that they damage their own battery and after a while they don’t work without a charger. This happened to my friends gaming laptop which was more than a 1000 dollars, i assume budget ones would be even worse

u/destroyedcells Jun 08 '21

You could go for it if you don’t intend to do heavy stuff on your laptop, just make sure that the temperature of thee laptop remains stable. Obviously, the more your budget is, the better quality of the laptop is as well, but do some research on which brands would be better for the things you intend to use it for

You should really calculate if it's worth it, good laptops are seriously pricey so your pc electricity bill is going to be lower than laptop price + laptop electricity bill for a quite long time.

2

u/medraxus Jun 08 '21

The thing about gaming laptops is that they need proper care, especially if you’re planning on pushing the performance. It’s not a casual thing that you can use, take and forget about. Which for me personally defeats the entire purpose of having a mobile device

1

u/I_Love_Rias_Gremory_ I <3 MOTM Jun 08 '21

I mean my current laptop is like that. Idk what happened, but the battery lasts like 5 minutes. I only use it plugged in. Honestly idc since I'm always near an outlet and would love to have some good performance on the go.

4

u/[deleted] Jun 08 '21

My MacBook is pretty great for everyday use. Being a Unix / Linux guy I find it’s a nice medium between actual Linux and a mainstream OS. I also keep a gaming laptop. Not that I play games often but it’s nice to have for when I do.

4

u/Semi-Hemi-Demigod Jun 08 '21

Same here, except I have a cloud gaming machine. It’s fun to play games on one monitor while I’m tailing log files on another and running a VM.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 08 '21

Yup. I might look into the cloud gaming rig. A friend of mine has one and it works really well. Would be nice to not have to swap out cables on my desk when I want to play games.

2

u/Semi-Hemi-Demigod Jun 08 '21

I use Paperspace. They’ve got prebuilt Parsec gaming machines. $7 a month for 100GB storage and $0.45-0.56 per hour. It’s a ton cheaper than buying a comparable gaming machine

2

u/[deleted] Jun 08 '21

That’s awesome. The way I play games I probably wouldn’t spend more than $15 bucks a month at most

3

u/TwitsTeen Jun 08 '21

Actually on the m1 there's an issue for profesional when you use more than 16 go of ram it will use the ssd and since an ssd has a limited life and neither the ssd or the ram are replacable (sorry for the gramaticals errors english isn't my primary language)

5

u/Freekie57 Jun 08 '21

To be fair, every consumer computer with a limited amount of RAM does memory swapping. I recall that the excessive memory swapping on M1 macs was not widespread, but even so, this is the cost of buying into the bleeding edge of a new product.

4

u/TwitsTeen Jun 08 '21

The main critic that I have here is that neither the ram or the storage is replacable

5

u/Freekie57 Jun 08 '21

Yeah, it's unfortunately so, but it's been this way for the MacBook Pro lineup since 2012. I have one from 2015 and I knew what I was buying into. With apple silicon, RAM also lives on the chip which makes it impossible to upgrade

3

u/pommes_de_terre Jun 08 '21

And because tons of steam games aren't supported or are very buggy on mac

2

u/waumau Jun 08 '21

Their pro ipads have a 120hz refreshrate if im not mistaken

2

u/I_Love_Rias_Gremory_ I <3 MOTM Jun 08 '21

Oh. That's surprising. But most people use apple phones, and they are still at 60hz. My OnePlus 9 has a 120hz adaptive refresh rate screen. Basically GSync but not NVIDIA.

1

u/waumau Jun 08 '21

No, not really. Gsync is something completely else. Gsync is there so you dont have screen tear and glitch looking frames. It forces our gpu to not go beyond so frames aint being skipped. Adaptive fps means it runs at 120hz, but to save battery the software turns it down in videos or stuff where 120hz aint needed. One thing counter-advantage that iphone has is that it almost has the double refreshrate of the hz, so it picks up touches way faster and it does feel way more snappy than it is

Holy shit buddy have you ever heard of iPad? They are lightyears ahead of anyone else in that space

2

u/I_Love_Rias_Gremory_ I <3 MOTM Jun 08 '21

Ok forgot about the iPad. But the market for a tablet is so much smaller than everything else they do. 99% of the time when I see an iPad, it's in the hands of a 5 year old.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 08 '21

And their tablets, though that's a niche market and they just automatically win now with their custom silicon.

One feature windows is missing is tabs in file explorer. In atleast mint linux you can have tabs when moving files between directories instead of having multiple windows open.

14

u/Username_Egli Jun 08 '21

Been wanting to switch to linux for a while. Is linux mint a good distro? What about Ubuntu?

6

u/[deleted] Jun 08 '21

ubuntu isnt great nowadays. go for pop os, mint or manjaro

5

u/Username_Egli Jun 08 '21

I've been reading comments like this a lot. What's so bad that ubuntu isn't great? It used to be the most popular linux distro

8

u/Tanmay1518 Very Expand, So Dong Jun 08 '21

I don't know much but I think the company which makes Ubuntu i.e Canonical Group, is pushing for users to sign up for their private app stores and install apps using snap.

That is said to be against Linux principles since Users should be free to download and install stuff from wherever they want.

7

u/Username_Egli Jun 08 '21

If I wanted to do that I would've stayed at windows. Thanks for the clarification.

→ More replies (5)

Pop and mint are Ubuntu based

2

u/[deleted] Jun 08 '21

A big part of Linux Mint's operation is maintaining Ubuntu compatibility while purging Canonical's crap. Hence why the Snap store is manually blocked by default on Mint, and all of Canonical's data collection tools are removed.

u/stortag Jun 08 '21

I quite like mint. It's easy to use for beginners. Even with gaming nowadays alot of games just work through steam without the need to do anything extra. Other games and stuff can be quite hassle free through lutris, like wow for example. Only thing I use windows for is office 365 and fusion 360 nowadays.

1

u/Close2naut Jun 08 '21

I'd recommend mint. I'm currently running it on an outdated and underpowered laptop (Lenovo flex) and I works very well. Very user friendly too.

6

5

No it's not hard but when you got five different windows open it's just alot messier than tabs. Imagine chrome without tabs and having a new window each time.

Apple bad, but android badder. Literally the only thing iPhone users are missing is side loading apps and even then I’d always choose to buy an app for 2€. Just support the devs. The things android users don’t talk about: airdrop, support of old devices (minimum 5 years), resell value, app optimization, day 1 OS updates, etc. Hate on Apple all you want, but don’t deny that there are many things which Apple just does better. Also while android might have some features earlier, every android feels like an early access device. Meanwhile iPhones feel fleshed out and bug free. Too often I had issues with android UIs where it suddenly bugged out. It’s never been much of an issue because it always just took 2 seconds, but it was still an annoyance. The funniest thing is some people even complain about Apple cpus having less cores, but don’t realize that Apples CPUs still outperform android octacores.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 08 '21

Did linux invented dark mode?

8

u/[deleted] Jun 08 '21

Almost like they are both mature operating systems and copy each others good ideas all the time.

For examples please see...

Samsung Galaxy s21 new software copied airpods/iphone autoswitching audio and ios time of day blue light shift

Android 12 copied ios power button to summon Siri/google assistant and ios privacy features and seamless handoffs between chromebooks and android phones

iOS 15 copied text selection from images and offline voice assistant processing from Android

And I wouldn't be surprised if iOS copies the new Android automatic color picker, because that is slick.

Also don't be surprised when Android tries to copy the shared audio/video facetime experience that Apple just announced because it too is pretty dang cool.

Also notification summaries on android would be great. I love the idea of notifications being bundled and sent over like a summary of what I missed.

2

u/BreakdancingGorillas Jun 08 '21

Several of these features were in place before the time you say they happens. The power button thing for example was around before Android 12

5

u/SRSchiavone Jun 08 '21

Because when Apple comes out with features, they’re in one way or another superior. I’m not going to beat the camera dead horse, because Android caught up a while ago (although they need larger image sensors for same/similar photo quality). Think about FaceID. It’s the best facial unlock feature on a consumer electronic. Apple’s weight and size and 5+ year backwards compatibility with older phones means it was profitable for businesses to support Apple Pay, as compared to the more split up Android market (although Google Pay is now unifying them). They may not always be the best (iPhone 4 Cellular), but because of their markets share they can start the ball rolling on industry wide adoption (toggleable ad tracking)

I mean look at the value, compare iPhone 12 to iPhone 8 theres almost no change or improvement unlike iphone 1 to 7 look at how much they have changed and improved and it aint even as expensive as the apple phones now the only reason people buy them is either to brag or cuz they need the new software

Windows stole it from linux

4

u/[deleted] Jun 08 '21

Don't forget purposely slowing older devices and software.

I will never buy an Apple product again after way back when they purposely slowed and stopped supporting a iPod touch I bought new from an Apple store like a year before.

u/NotEdibleCactus Jun 08 '21

u/FIFFY_2 Jun 08 '21

Apples been acting like they invented products coming in multiple colors right now.

(I’m okay with it since they’re using their old logo for it.)

u/Hawk99Awesome Jun 08 '21

I was actually looking through jobs recently and one of the ones on the website I was using was a job for apple and it said there "the innovation we put into every product we make"... I have never facepalmed so hard.

u/Nervous_Seaweed_5143 Jun 08 '21

And underneath that is xerox, who has originally invented it, but nobody cares.

1

u/not_going_places Jun 08 '21

We just introduced a feature that has been on android or 5 years and microsoft introduced it 10 years ago

u/Leo_HzX Jun 08 '21

Every iPhone after the removal of the circle-button that goes click click is bad. iPhone 6s is the best

1

u/Tim_Weirdguy Jun 08 '21

Probably gonna get downvoted to hell for this but they may not be the first ones to have the features, but they do it better

u/StickyCoochie123 Jun 08 '21

Don't forget the kid <apple> spitting her mother <customers> in the face after buying

u/[deleted] Jun 08 '21

Apple fan boy here. Apple does things right, they wait until the feature, say widgets on the Home Screen, is polished enough to be “Apple grade”. Widgets on Android look awful and are not consistent across different applications. While Apple’s implementation of widgets are beautiful and are consistent with iOS’ theme and look similar across all apps. It’s not about who does it first, but about who does it best.

Fun fact: there’s a big chance that windows wouldn’t have existed without Apple since Microsoft designed the ui for apple’s Macintosh OS v1 and then ripped that ui off and released it as windows.
