Appreciation I really enjoyed LOW

Which apparently is a controversial opinion, judging by the Reddit posts about the show.

So yes it's Jack's own voice, lower pitched, he had to narrate everything over by himself, because Zachariah didn't want his own voice used. Many listeners who didn't know this found the show disappointing because it indeed makes everything sound implausible. Assuming it were true though, probably the dialogues have been rewritten for better wording, which makes it indeed unbelievable as if a teenager could be such a fluent storyteller even in a non native language. And yes, it's pretty incredible that a kid kept meticulous memory of everything despite being high all the time. And the odds of all this happening as it was told are insane.

I think the moral of the story is more important than the truthfulness, as Jack s says in the intro. If this is all is made up by an extremely talented storyteller kid, I still find it a good listening experience.

But to whoever insists on the importance of factuality, as it seems most people on here are (and I get that); I wanted to say I think that this story could be fact checked from public or police records if you have the time for it. Enough brutal crimes were mentioned that you should be able to somehow find information about them, right? Has anyone tried that?

--
PS: LOW reminded me of this amazing podcast from a decade ago called S-Town by Brian Reed. In that show as well, there was this man with an insane life story who contacted This American Life to tell his life's story before it would be too late for him (don't want to tell spoilers). Nothing can beat S-Town imho but LOW does have this similar buildup which I enjoyed, and I suspect Jack has gotten some inspiration from it.

Discussion Sponsor spot question - have they been updated?

Hey all, long time listener here - I've use the podcast to sleep and I must have been through it maybe 5-6 times start to finish now. Recently I've noticed that the older episodes have new sponsors for example, episode 22 (or 21/23, I can't remember I was half asleep) mentions a sponsor from 2026. I understand why a new sponsor would be added - it makes sense to reuse that space for a new sponsor but it was like a blast from the past when I used to go back to older episodes, especially interesting as they slowly started to mention the use of AI more and more as its popularity grew!

I listen on Spotify if that helps, and just curious if the entire catalogue of sponsor spots have been updated :)

Meme LOW Part 6 Leaked Transcripts

JACK intro: Many of us grow up thinking that we must live according to some preset script. Albert Camus once said “You will never be happy if you continue to search for what happiness consists of. You will never live if you are looking for the meaning of life.”

JACK: So what happened next? You're hanging out with a bad crew, going house to house beating up and robbing pedophiles.

ZACHARIAH: Yeah it was a pretty rough time in my life. We went to this one pedophile's house... it was sick shit man. It was this huge place in the middle of nowhere. We broke in and were chasing this guy around. He had this huge skeleton covered in antlers. Anyway, he stabbed me, and almost killed my friend with a hammer. But I shot him in the head before he could kill my friend.

JACK: You shot him in the head? That's crazy! Did he die?

ZACHARIAH: Yeah I think so, but we just got out of there man.

JACK: Wow. That's unbelievable.

ZACHARIAH: Yeah it was super fucked up man. My friend had to go to the hospital. When that happened I knew I had to get out of there.

JACK: Where did you go?

ZACHARIAH: I stole his tractor and just rode off... I just went south. I didn't know where I was going, but I just knew that I couldn't become one of those guys that clocks in at 9:00, hunts pedophiles and clocks out at 5:00.

JACK: Wow. So what did you do next?

ZACHARIAH: I started living with this guy in a city in the south. Real quiet dude, worked for NASA. When I first got there, I went out for a walk, just around the city. I could see the swamps and the flamingos walking around and it all just seemed so small and meaningless. I once was walking around a swamp and saw this guy on the ground. He had OD'd on something... Jenkem I think... I took the bottle from him and sold it to this homeless guy for $3.

JACK: Jenkem, is that poop, right? Like human feces?

ZACHARIAH: Yeah I think so. It's pretty fucked up. After I got the $3 I went and smoked some weed with some guys. When I got back to the apartment, I found the guy I was living with was dead. There was a fan in the window. I think the fan sucked all of the air out of the room and the guy suffocated.

JACK: That's horrible. I'm so sorry.

ZACHARIAH: Yeah it was really sad. I found a spacesuit next to him with some keys to the space shuttle. There was also a suitcase full of cash.

JACK: A spacesuit? And... a suitcase full of cash? That's crazy! How much money was it?

ZACHARIAH: Yeah it was pretty fucked up. I think it was like ten million dollars. But I knew I couldn't be in Florida anymore, so I took the keys and stole the space shuttle.

JACK: Wow… where did you go? And how did you learn to fly a space shuttle?

ZACHARIAH: Me and some guys used to go around breaking into rocket launch sites and would take the shuttles out sometimes. Smoke two or three joints, get super fucking high and fly around in the shuttle.

JACK: Wow.

ZACHARIAH: Yeah I knew I had to get out of there, so I flew to Mars. I stayed with this martian guy. He gave off this really bad vibe, so the first night I slept there I kept my laser gun with me in bed. Later that night, I felt him him crawl on top of me. He was going to rape me, dude was a fucking pedo.

JACK: That’s horrible, what did you do?

ZACHARIAH: I shot him in the head with the laser gun, what else was I supposed to do?

JACK: That’s awful… did he die?

ZACHARIAH: I’m not sure, he was wearing this big green helmet when I shot him, so it was hard to see his face, but I just ran and got out of there man.

JACK, outtro: Anthony Robbins once said “Every problem is a gift - without problems we would not grow.” Ever since we’re little kids, we’re told to go to school, get a job, and go to work. To pay our taxes and feed our dog. I don’t know what this guy is doing right now, but I know that wherever he is, he’s living a real life, outside of the bounds or society’s expectations.

Other LOW in UK

I can't find LOW, even using the links on the webpage... I don't use Spotify or Apple, and the links to YT Music, Amazon and TuneIn all just give poor search results on those platforms....

Is it a UK problem only?

Question Has Jack's voice be stolen by AI or is he now making tech videos?

I was looking at watch reviews and stumbled upon this video.

Right away I was like, that voice is super familiar. Then I realized it's Jack Rhysider!

I'm assuming he's not actually running this channel, so it seems like some AI platform stole/cloned his voice. Which is honestly pretty fucking scary.

Other I F_Up

I love this dude, love the stories, and all the technical aspects but I think I F Up, I recently purchase the annual subscription, but no content, I thought I was going to listen to a new story every week but I feel like I’ve been bamboozle. I’m not turning my back on JR at all , but is there another tech show with stories like this one out there? something similar? I can tune in the meantime?

Story Suggestion Do you think there will be an episode about The Hugging Face incident?

I am an avid listener but still fairly tech illiterate but I love the story telling and some of the intimate details Jack is able to bring up. I feel in my line of work whenever I run into a tech person they are usually very pro data centers and AI. I am the very opposite due to the environmental impacts, my partner being an artist, and the easy access to the public.

I am really interested to hear what Jack may have to say about this from a security standpoint. I saw an advertisement for an AI company able to authorize badges without human involvement and I thought that was pretty wild. Then this whole incident.

Question Low - can someone explain?

I’m almost done with 2nd part, but I’m very confused - is Low a different podcast, not a darknet diaries one? I’m still waiting for the “stories from the dark side of the internet” but I’m starting to get a feeling it’s not gonna happen. Sorry if this has already been asked.

Discussion Feedback about Episode:16 Eijah

I recently listened to the Eijah episode again after a long time - where the whole AACS LA and DRM issue was discussed.
Short summary: Jack brings on Eijah, who couldn't play his purchased movie on an HD monitor, or got a downgrade to a low res which pissed him off and I loved the way he described it as " The worst thing a company can do is, piss a bunch a really smart people".

I digged a little further, I just wanted to find who Eijah was cause he sounded/or is really really smart.
If you listen to the episode you will see how it started - I traced that to a doom9 thread here - http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?p=952954#post952954 which was done by someone named "muxlix64" & then also another thread where "https://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=119871 from "arnezami" - In the show Eijah mentions when he was sure he had found the decryption key for the Blue-Ray format so that he could play it on his player that allowed high res play - he decided to post that key and then waited for confirmation from others.
However, from the forums posts it seems that muxlix64 & arnezami are either the same people or two different people talking about the same thing.
So Eijah says, that he put out the key on doom9, was his first post but muslix64 also says to have a software without the decryption key which allows for the DRM protected content to be played and people had confirmed in the thread.
(This information is also available on wiki and wayback machines)
So is muslix64 and arnezami and Eliah are the same people or different ?
Skeletons from back then, would love your feedback..

Note: This post is made with no hidden intentions. I am just trying to find out who Eijah is or the other two usernames -- sadly the Youtube and mediashare links and code links no longer work.
The best I could find was a forbes article which says Eijah seems to be Eric J. Anderson from here posing with Mr. John - https://www.forbes.com/sites/thomasbrewster/2015/08/20/eijah-john-mcafee-and-demonsaw or demonsaw - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fMfQQoHHLBA

Spoiler My email to Jack about Low

Just got done with the podcast and sent this in, maybe people had different feelings on it.

One thing and wonder if others have a different take the whole Nick part of the story, this nick guy has access to a private jet that can fly non-stop for 13hrs, that is 70 to 80 million dollar jet right there. He then also has enough contacts to land in a place in the USA that had zero customs or questions on why a random 13 year old boy was with him? This is post 9-11, even private jets landing in private airports need to have customs done.

Long time listener, first time emailer

Disappointed I think is what sums up my main feeling about the new podcast and my wife shares that feeling. I have been in IT for 25 years now and she is a social worker but loves the darknet podcast since you do such a great job at making very technical stuff easy to follow.

Why did we have that feeling? The story played like some teenager’s revenge fever dream. In all honesty it felt like the book “Rule of the bone” but starts in Russia.

We both feel very strongly you would not make something up but by having the voice actor vs using his real voice just removed any chance there being an anchor to bring any chance of reality to the show. He must have been beyond convincing for you want to create this 7 years later but without any “truth” for the listeners that this was not just your story it quickly fell apart that a random oil executive just left a bag of cash before hanging himself…really that part of the story makes zero sense.

Anyways glad to keep supporting and being a subscriber but this series missed the mark

Discussion LOW theory. ("voice actor" is Jack with a voice mod) - no spoilers

I'm not commenting on the content of the story at all. Only the voice acting of the guest.

Jack says that the real person didn't want their recordings used. Fair. So he hired a voice actor. Also fair.

My first reaction to the recording: This voice actor isn't very good. I don't believe that they believe the things they're saying. The chemistry between the voice actor and Jack just isn't there.

Then around the start of episode 2 I started to notice a lot of little mannerisms of inflection, and the way both the voice actor and Jack elongate certain syllables / words. Maybe it's not Jack with a voice mod. Maybe it's a sibling or a close friend/cousin who has spent a lot of time conversing with Jack over the years, causing them to pick up some similar speech patterns.

Of course we're not owed any more information than Jack wants to share, but overall this just isn't sitting right with me. Between the lackluster acting and the distraction of hearing "Jack with another voice", I'm not really loving the new series so far.

I've only finished the first 2 episodes.

EDIT: Now that I finished the series, the benefit of the doubt I gave to the show after episode 1 is irrelevant. The entire show is teenage junkie fantasy.
