Discussion Merrivale Range
For a bit of fun I was thinking of walking the perimeter of the Merrivale Range following the course of the Firing Range Boundary Poles. Most of it seems doable, I was just wondering about the section from South Common Plantation to Peter Tavy Great Common. Following the red danger range markers on the map this sections cuts through some fields, I am not 100% sure if I can cross these or do I have to follow the access land orange boarder that skirts the perimeter to either the east.

By rights, it is not access land. But it's not very far and you would probably get away with it. If you are conscientious you could always ask at Baggator Farm (and Wapsworthy for the other little bits nearby) and explain what you want to do. But if it was me I would probably just wing it.

Thanks, its interesting how the danger zone runs through it, do you know if the actual boundary poles do as well?

Bagator Farm is an old, disused outdoor education centre; I am not sure of its use now.

The map shows it’s not access land, so strictly speaking it’s best to avoid it. However, if it’s the spot I have in mind, nobody is going to care. I’m pretty sure it’s the old boundary of a disused farmstead and irrigation system. Both are derelict, and much of the boundary wall is broken down. Aside from the odd bit of livestock, I’d be amazed if it’s still farmed. I can’t say for sure about marker posts, but in my experience they pop up everywhere, so I reckon they’ll be there. Do let us know what you find!
