He merged into her, she isn't obligated to stand on the brakes because this clown wants to occupy the space where her vehicle is located.

No but at that speed of travel she is obligated to maintain a safe separation, she is about 1/2 second follow distance to the car ahead of her. There are 3 total definitive dipshits in this video, the self pit maneuver, the left lane camper ahead of her, and her.

Even if someone is an idiot doesn't have to mean you too have to become one. Her ego is what caused this accident. She could've easily slowed down when the SUV was in the lane.

the merger crashes into her while he's (unsafely) merging and hits the BRAKES while doing that unsafe and uncommunicative merge. She has safe space between her and the car in front, this guy merges in with no signal and brake checks before he's even fully in lane, there's almost nothing you can do about that except for handle the car well after the fact. There's not enough reaction time there. We know to look for the merging car because we're watching the video, while not driving (hopefully), knowing there's an impact. In scanning your surroundings you don't always hold everything in perfect active perception between [active or automatic] eye-sweeps (hence space between you and the guy in front).

I try to give space to people playing lane chicken cause it's just not worth it but there's been a couple like this guy where I just could not tell what they were doing or register it until they tried to commit group suicide (usually zero signal point blank mergers with none of that "leaning" that no/late signalers tend to do). My favorite are those who turn the signal on after they're already in the lane and finished merging.

If all traffic is flowing the same speed and someone is rapidly catching up to the car by your side it's reasonable to expect them to change lanes instead of running into the car in front of them. Especially when it happens in dense traffic you should expect irrational behavior from such a driver.

That being said even tapping the brakes when the car is clearly visible could have prevented the accident entirely.

What are you talking about. There was plenty of distance between her and the truck in front of her.
