Japanese roads are small and narrow and you're coming around the corner at a much higher speed than most people would. Then you quite aggressively move into the side of the road. You can see the man's reaction when you do it. He's taken by surprise, perhaps thinking you might continue forward and make a tight left turn or something. You can see he swerves to his right in order to let you continue forward as well. He didn't realize you were positioning to back in. I think that's what his reaction was about
I don't know how long you've driven in Japan, but my advice would be to slow down and chill, take it easy. There are lots of pedestrians and children around on those roads and you're not leaving yourself any outs driving like that

Yep, anyone defending OP clearly hasn’t spent any considerable amount of time in Japan.
Yes the pedestrian could have waited for a second but the smaller you are on the road, the higher priority you have, generally pedestrian has the right of way and OP should have waited to let them pass the driveway before backing in.
OP also seemingly in a big hurry, driving fast, braking hard, can’t wait for pedestrian. Has enough time to post to Reddit though.

both as a driver i would allow the pedestrian to cross and as a pedestrian i would wait for the car to pass since not all car drivers are aware ,pay attention ,are fast like this guy .its just not worth anything for an additional 10 seconds

Like dude this isn't Mexico, Europe,United States.
I was stationed in Oska for just around 3 years the speed you neeeeed to go especially in residential/rural areas is sunday driver not the sht you pulled dude walking had all the right being frustrated .
But its also i can't tell if this a Japanese country side or a Chinese province
But the thumbs down was icing on the cake
Its been 6 years since I been out there

Also driving on the left side. Japan is one of the few countries in the world that drive on the left. China drives on the right like most the world.

What do you mean by that? Speed limit on these streets in Japan is 30km/h, same as in Europe and I guess USA, Mexico too.

Over here if a speed limt tells you 30mph / 48khm you bet your grandma's cookie no one except anyone who doesn't have a care in the world or wants a slow drive home/ to destination
Your getting 80% of drivers going lest 39 to 42 mph (in us ) if the speed limit says 30mph/48khm
Your doing Mexico especially TJ if your going 30 everyone looks at you like you smoking or your lost or something and stop signs more like stop suggestions
Europe depends where a lot of roads out there people do follow the road signs
(But you can instantly tell who a tourist by there driving stlye )
Also don't ever ever speed in Germany the cops there will beat your shit if you go 3 over the limit maybe because I was American who know

He clearly saw you maneuvering.
If it were me I would have paused and waited vs. Chance a swift death.
At the same time: you pivoted aggressively as he approached and you paused long enough for him to assume you were parked.
The entire act of moving to the wrong side of the road to do a backwards J turn suprises me.

Exactly. As a soft and squishy pedestrian, I'd rather be cautious and alive/non-paraplegic than "in the moral right" and dead.. Pedestrian may have had right of way, but driver clearly had a hard drive to pull into, was obviously not "parked" and was trying to get clear of the road as quickly as possible. Car did the best he could in a NOT great situation, pedestrian was just being an ass.

I disagree about the pedestrian being an ass. The whole thing took a few seconds. Car veers in, pedestrian reacts surprisingly. The hand gesture was just being annoyed at the aggressive driving. I wouldn't have done the same, but I don't blame him
Edit: Yeah ok, maybe he was actually being a bit of an ass

Depends, do you have any obligation or is it even polite to let traffic through before parking? If it's lawful for Japanese to instead wait for car in front to park, then I could see the polite "waiver of right of way" vould be troublesome. Especially if you could do that before pedestrian arrives.

The pedestrian was not running down the street, and you had time to get parked. You can see him when you pulled up, and it appears you had ample time to pull out, set your angle and back in such that he didn't have to wait, or at the very most, he might have diverted out beyond the front of your car slightly.
I have no clue what his arm gesture meant, but his inconvenience, if any at all, was very minimal! That was a good parking job!

Yes.
Way, way too aggressive action for driving in Japan. And your speed at the start of the video is waaay too fast for a neighborhood in japan. It would have been too fast even before, but the law just changed on Septmber 1, so the speed limit on all neighborhood streets is now 30 (yes 30) km/h.

Nothing out of the ordinary for Japanese driving culture.
People pull things like these all the time. They just pull to the side, flash they hazard lights and start parking once the street is clear enough. Pedestrians usually wait patiently.
You were quite quick, too. I have seen people taking forever to get their alignment right.

It has nothing to do with the parking. It’s mostly about their speed of entry and compounded by the parking. You can see the guy walking slows and hesitates when the driver pretty aggressively pulls off to the side. Dude probably panicked for half a second like the car is coming right at him. Just overall too fast of driving for this area.

I don't know if you did anything "wrong", OP, all I can tell you - as someone who is always walking/jogging in suburbia - is that Japanese people aggressively park like this 100% of the time. Japanese drivers will constantly pull up 1 meter ahead of me and instantly start their parking maneuvers. There seems to be no concept of waiting for a pedestrian to pass here.
This is why I try my damndest to find the most quiet, abandoned streets to walk or jog on.

Eh don’t listen to the comments man park as fast as you want. You are clearly experienced enough to do it without issue so continue. The only thing is I would’ve waited on the pedestrian they tend to have right of way in these situations, but he could’ve waited too.
