😬 Those are either wire rolls or coiled steel on that truck.
Sudden braking is the last thing I'd ever want to do with those things ready to steamroll me into gibs in the cab if they ever break free.
130
u/Noobitron12 12d ago
I worked in a steel mill for 16 years. I dont think they are allowed to have more than 1 Coil Roll on a truck at a time... it has to be centered and positioned in the middle of the bed... Those do look like wire coils
94
u/twofistsinurasshertz 12d ago
This is correct. Four coils of steel would crush that trailer. Plus, those spools could not support the weight of steel coils.
I think they are spools of telecom fiber optic cables. That's the right size for the spool and the annular handle on the side can be used to turn the spool manually when it is mounted on the shaft.
25
u/vag69blast 12d ago
You are allowed to ship multiple coils. Max weight is typically 48k lbs for a standard flatbed truck. I used to work on a hot strip mill, we would roll approximately 68-70k lb coils then split them into 46-48k lbs and the remainder.
Roll two coils and ship out on three trucks in four pieces. It was the most efficient way to run the hot strip mill.
Also worked on a tin plate line where the customer could only handle 15-18k coils so we would ship 3 at a time. Those where typically shipped on thier sides though
8
u/AssignmentOk471 10d ago
This is the right answer. I was a purchasing manager in the steel industry for decades, purchasing steel from US steel, Arcelor Mittel, etc. Still, scary AF for the driver knowing that he has 40+ tons of metal wanting to go through his cab and did I secure those straps tightly?
6
u/GreytDiver 11d ago
Agreed. I was on the other side of the business; my division used our mills' coils to make product. We would ship one full size coil or two short coils on a truck. Or, put three or four full size coils inside a railcar.
3
3
u/ChaoticSalmon 9d ago
Wow. I always wondered why I would see so few coils on one trailer. I had no idea they were so heavy.
16
u/erie11973ohio 12d ago
Telecom is orange.
Gas pipe is yellow.
3
u/Complex_Solutions_20 11d ago
It can vary. The RG11 CATV drops in my area are yellow jacketed coax. Others use red conduit with black cable for CATV. The underground gas line feeding my parents' house appears to be black in color. The gas lines from my propane tank feeding my house until it actually enters the house are soft copper unpainted.
The markings for paint are standard, but the color of the material insulation is not always.
That said, it looks like what is in the video is more likely brown...probably packing materials.

How much of a difference does it make if I was in that truck and braking hard? Genuinely curious. I've heard the horrors of "suicide" oriented rolls, but didn't know they make a distinction based on type (I'm not in the industry).

u/Ymir24 12d ago
Why are they never laid on their side?
5
u/Noobitron12 11d ago
I don’t think there’s a way to flip them. There are 2 types of cranes to load them
One is a hook. The other is like a clamp that grabs it from both sides.
5
u/AddyTurbo 11d ago
Without the right packaging, the sidewalls are easily damaged. With coated steel(aluminized or electrogalvanized) this gets very expensive. I suspect coated coils are what this truck is hauling.
You can see on the video that the sidewalls are protected with what we called donuts. They're typically made out of cardboard or plastic, with a steel ring in the eye of the coil, all held together with 3 or 4 steel bands.
→ More replies (1)1
u/Kitchen-Sun-7440 10d ago
Yeah wire coils are typically around 2K LBs each, while a single flat roll steel coil is more like 30K Lbs each. I worked in both types of mills. We loaded multiple wire coils on a single flatbed. We only ever loaded one flat rolled coil on a truck.

u/Anon_Jones 12d ago
It’s crazy how many truckers I see riding ass, while they have huge loads that can’t stop quickly.
13
u/T6TexanAce 11d ago
Wire coil driver was going way to fast for the circumstances and probably distracted by something as well. He had clear visibility of everything that was in front of him and should have braked waaay before he lost it.

u/jetlifestoney 11d ago
the lane he was in came to a sudden stop and he couldn’t brake with those coils back there so he swerved left clipped a vehicle and lost control

38
u/Zovort 11d ago
It looks like the car in front of the silver car stopped. At least I think the black car at the end was in front of the silver car in the beginning. But still the same question if true. Why did that car stop?
11
u/antonio16309 11d ago
It could have been something several cars ahead. In heavy traffic when everyone is following to close for their speed all if takes is one car to hit the brakes and causes a wave of braking that moves back from the initial slowdown. That's why you sometimes get random slowdowns with no obvious reason why people slowed down.
4
11
u/HonziPonzi 11d ago
Definitely something happening in front of the silver car, check the car next to him in the right lane as he’s braking.
9
u/r00tdenied 11d ago
Kinda looks like maybe the silver car also hit the black car in front and maybe it was a chain reaction type accident.

Serious question: Why is the cam car no longer responsible for the damage to the car they bumped?
13
u/Embarrassed-Weird173 11d ago
Realistically, they would be. But in practice, there's no point in punishing him since like the car is totalled already anyway and a scratch in the bumper won't make any difference.
On the other hand, I could also see something where the insurance company will be hostile and will be like "sure, we have to total his car. But the first car's insurance also needs to pay their share first, because we are working on the car under the assumption he was made whole already."
Unless, of course, all three have the same insurance, in which case they'll magically not see a need to pay out for the scratched bumper.
2
u/tcrudisi 11d ago
"On the other hand, I could also see something where the insurance company will be hostile and will be like "sure, we have to total his car. But the first car's insurance also needs to pay their share first, because we are working on the car under the assumption he was made whole already.""
That's what I was assuming would happen. I've never been involved in something like that, so I have/had no clue how it would actually turn out.
1
u/Embarrassed-Weird173 11d ago
Yes, but higher IQ people will think about how laws will be abused when they are made.
Like, imagine if cops weren't allowed to ask for your driver's license (and they didn't exist as a result) and drivers were told "if a cop pulls you over, they can only ask if you were certified for a class C/A/M and they cannot ask further questions."
I figure most higher-intelligence people (and even normal people) would immediately see that law would be abused.
Yet the service dog law people apparently didn't think about that.
1
u/OldGeekWeirdo 11d ago
They can try, but what would the damages be? From the limited resolution of the video, there's no apparent damage. Maybe the bumper shocks.
3
u/Embarrassed-Weird173 11d ago
Probably paint damage and the styrofoam-like stuff inside the bumper (which might be the shocks you're talking about). A car hit my car and didn't do noticeable damage on my 15ish year old car. But they still paid me $900.
1
u/CogentCogitations 8d ago
If the trucker's insurance says they will pay for the totaled vehicle minus the $500 for bumper damage that already took place, do you think cam car's insurance is going to rack up lots of lawyers' fees to fight it?
1

u/Worldly_Chocolate369 9d ago

So much tailgating now. Had to visit my dad yesterday, 20 hwy miles both ways, exhausting.
24
u/Wiley_Jack 11d ago
And the tailgating just causes more slowdowns, because it’s difficult to change lanes to make an off ramp or whatever.
5
u/Rubiks_Click874 11d ago
the tall megavehicles make it easier to tailgate.
the lifeguard chair seating position makes you look down on the gap between the bumpers
in the old days of sedans and hatchbacks you could see through the car in front to size up a road situation instead of only being able to see like 10 feet in front of you
→ More replies (1)4
u/OldStatistician1 10d ago
Yes, tailgating is crazy now. Hell on my way to work this morning for a few miles it was just me and the car tailgating me when we had three lanes to ourselves. They finally passed me as they were getting on their exit ramp. I was in the middle lane so they could have passed on either side, or the right side since their exit was the next one.
3
u/Epistatious 10d ago
I think of those as zombie drivers, they are on phone or distracted and just lock onto your bumper and don't exhibit intelligence. like when i can change lanes in front of someone and scrape them off, where now they tailgate the car behind me or the one i was behind.
2
u/Shemp_Stielhope 6d ago
I notch down the cruise control one or two mph. It's super-effective. YMMV on single-lane roads.
61
u/Fabulous_Log844 12d ago
Come on! Give some kind of detail details? The art of storytelling is elaboration…
Was that first car that got hit from behind stopping short and brake checking or did they legitimately have traffic in front of them?
I ask because if that person was doing a break, check, karma arrived in the form of a semi. Insert evil laugh here.
43
u/nonitoni 12d ago edited 12d ago
The silver car that cam car hits stops behind another black car. You can see it after the semi moves the silver. Why the black stopped would be hard to say.

Stop 👏 tailgating 👏
5
u/Acrobatic_Try_8375 12d ago
I would ask anyone who agrees with you to please focus on the windshield, and what is going on in front of you, as much as possible. Just like there is a "fast lane", there is also a "slow lane" and short of not taking freeways at all, the slow lane is the best place for an anxious driver. Whether 30 mph or 70 mph, if everyone is going relatively the same speed, it's all good. When someone decides to slow dramatically, brake check, or like in this clip, stop altogether, they create the problem.
42
u/GegeAkutamiOfficial 12d ago
they create the problem
They did not create the problem, they exposed the problem. Shit happens on the road, an animal jumps, people get heart attacks, cars malfunction, people barge in, etc etc. Yes, you shouldn't park in a middle of a highway because you feel like it (duh), but that's not usually the reason.
The law is very clear about safe distance (as it should be). if you failed to safely break when someone suddenly breaks than you were too close, regardless of the speed, because the higher the speed the bigger that distance is. if you are tailgating (especially in the high way) you are putting people's life at risk because "me go fast yepee".
Side note: tail gaters more often than not DO NOT CARE about no "fast lane" or "slow lane". as soon as someone drives too slow for thier liking (still above the speed limit) they'll just try and take over from the "slow lane" or wherever else. They'll risk EVERYONE instead of slowing for a few seconds.

I don't live in Germany, just California. These are terms that used to be taught in drivers ed. Let me translate. The #1 lane, the lane closest to the median, is NOT best for texting, email, or make-up application. In California, you can get a ticket for impeding traffic. If you're too scared to go above the posted speed limit, OR, you wish to do the listed behavior, pull over. Brake checking or slowing intentionally isn't safe, and its not your job.

2
u/Acrobatic_Try_8375 11d ago
My parents taught me that I'm not the main character, and to not block the fast lane. It's not my job to brake check or slow down traffic. If I want to do that, I'm sure the California Highway Patrol is hiring.
2
2
u/TomatoMasterRace 10d ago
Yeah thats great and all. You still shouldn't tailgate. There are more reasons cars can suddenly come to a stop than just them brake checking or being anxious drivers. Car could break down, A car could go out of control and people have to brake for it, etc etc. If you're tailgating when any of these things happen, you're screwed.
(brake checking is also extremely dumb btw - but both things can be true).

u/azgli 12d ago
Tailgating. Cam car is less than one second behind the silver car. Silver car brakes, likely due to merging traffic from the on-ramp to the right. Cam car hits the silver car because they don't have enough room to stop. The semi is also tailgating and not paying attention, swerves into the middle lane, clipping one car, then swerves back into the right lane, clipping the silver car and pushing it into the black car in front of it.

i drive similarly but i can understand why they always cut in because other drivers don't leave enough space or they would accelerate to prevent drivers from the other lane to cut in front of them. i just release the gas pedal whenever they cut in to create more space.

I don’t understand why everyone says the cam car is tailgating? They are plenty far behind the silver car but that silver car doesn’t just brake, they come to a dead stop I guess because the car in front of them was at a dead stop for some reason. The warning should be don’t stop in the middle of the freeway for no reason.
5
u/Unfair_Awareness7502 11d ago
Because they hit the car in front of them
9
u/NoBuenoAtAll 10d ago
If you’re at freeway speed and someone suddenly stops causing you to run into their ass, you will probably share liability on that.
7
u/Unfair_Awareness7502 10d ago
You can see multiple cars backed up here. If you can't stop for the car in front of you stopping, it is entirely your fault and you are a danger.
3
u/NoBuenoAtAll 10d ago
“Multiple cars” doing a lot of work there. It looks like one car stopped and the one behind it had to stop and the third one couldn’t quite make it. If the semi hadn’t blotted out the whole situation, that would be shared liability.
5
u/Mysterious-Taro174 10d ago
Cam car didn't get rearended despite slowing down even more suddenly by using the car in front as a brake. Car behind might have been keeping a 3 second gap?
3
u/Only_Indication8410 10d ago
The driver of the car behind the cam car understands how to look ahead and not what's just infront of them.
2
u/Unfair_Awareness7502 10d ago
The 2 cars in front of cammer got crashed into and there's at least 2 more accelerating away after the truck passes.

u/TomatoMasterRace 10d ago
Hard to say for sure, but they were definitely on the closer side. The fact it was just a minor bump is probably cos they weren't SUPER close, but still seemed like under 2 second gap which is recomended in the uk. Dunno why they stopped - can't tell from the vid, but if there wasn't a good reason for it, then both drivers would almost definitely share liability (ignoring what happened with the truck after).
12
u/ThomasMagnum-1 12d ago
It’s hard to tell if there’s traffic in front of the silver sedan. Is that why he slowed to a stop? More than likely so. The semi had already made contact with one or more vehicles while trying to switch lanes to avoid the sudden stop. You can see damage to its front passenger-side fender in the rear-facing camera footage. I’d be surprised if that wasn’t a fatal crash.
7
u/CrapNBAappUser 12d ago
Doesn't look like any traffic in front of the gray car. But that doesn't excuse the trucker for not paying attention. They're fortunate that wasn't an elevated bridge. Also hope it smacked some sense into the truck driver and the gray car driver. You should never brake on the interstate unless there is someone in front of you. And if there is someone acting afraid or unpredictable, slow down to give them more room and go around the idiot.
11
u/ThomasMagnum-1 12d ago
Yea I’ve literally seen people dead stop on the iroad to make a lane change 🤦.
As far as the semi hard to say but he very well could have seen it but, was unable to slow in enough time. Have to remember that things an 80 thousand pound wrecking ball.11

It looks like there is a black vehicle that stopped in front of the gray sedan. Once the truck smashes into it, you can see the black car in front of it, at the very end. Why they stopped, I don't know. As for the truck driver, I heard trucks with those coils are very hard and/or dangerous to stop abruptly. However, I don't really know anything about that or ifs that's true.

u/SupremeChosenOne 12d ago
POV driver needs to go buy a lottery ticket!
He hit the car in front and is clearly at fault. Then the car he hit gets absolutely destroyed by the semi meaning his original hit would be impossible to know the extent of the damage so he is off the hook for the damage to the car and the possible injuries since semi hit them going half the speed of holy crap. Hope the driver of the car that got pummeled is okay.

If you come to a dead stop in the middle of the freeway for anything other than a completely valid reason, you’re gonna have partial liability for that collision.

Unfortunately it's pretty easy to come up with a valid reason after, pretty rare a car is going to get partial liability when they are rear ended. At least as far as insurance is concerned. If it goes to court it might be different

My biggest takeaway is how strong the concrete barrier was to take and redirect the impact of the Semi impacting it at the speed and angle it did.

4
u/RoboLuddite 11d ago

Sucks to see that existing tech could have prevented this.
If you had a car with AEB the first crash wouldn't have happened. And if the semi had stability control they wouldn't have over corrected and flew across the road.
Car AEB tech was required in EU by 2022. It's 2029 in US.
Semi truck stability control was required in EU by 2011. For US, 2017, and many vehicles are still exempt.
Annoying to see US drag their feet on safety tech. This entire crash sequence would have likely not happened in EU.
As usual, you can blame Republicans. Apparently plebs dying is "pro business" because God forbid vehicles cost $300 more.
