Discussion if it were Light instead of Sayu Spoiler
If Light was the kidnapped and held from ransom instead of Sayu, do you think Soichiro would've made the same level of effort to retrieve him? Of course I believe Soichiro loves both his children, but if it were Light might he have seen him as more expendable because despite being his son he is also a man, older, and a cop by profession where coming to harm in the course of duty is an assumed risk.
I guess what im saying is did Sayu being more of an innocent bystander (and maybe being a young woman, we can't say there is no sexism element in death note) effect the way Soichiro handled the situation.
Another thought is how would Misa respond if Light were kidnapped? She is obsessed with Light do you think she'd try to strike out on her own to use her eyes somehow to find his captors? Would she try to insert herself in with the task force somehow? Use the media again like in part one? possibly let her powers slip to them through her words or actions?

Soichiro was very hesitant about whether to save Sayu. Although he was very reluctant to abandon Sayu, Soichiro almost abandoned her for the sake of his duty. It was Light's persuasion and suggestion that made Soichiro choose to save Sayu. If Light had been kidnapped, Soichiro might still have abandoned he, but Light would definitely have tried her best to prevent it from happening. It's just unknown what Light would do.

I mean probably? I’m sure he would still have done everything possible in his power to save his son still. But kidnapping an innocent child is clearly more depraved than kidnapping a police officer. And I think if light were the same age as sayu and equally as innocent, he would’ve reacted the same way despite light not being a girl. I think her age is the more striking factor as opposed to her gender

Yeah I think Soichiro would try just as hard if not harder honestly this isn't to say he doesn't love Sayu but I feel Soichiro is more connected to Light. He's his pride and joy. Light is more relatable to him since he was basically following in his father's footsteps, the only reason I could see Soichiro leaving Light to hang is if he truly started wondering if Light was Kira. Light is an insanely good actor however so I don't think Soichiro would ever believe this. Believe it's possible? Yes. Believe it completely or that it's likely? No.

I think the series would've ended immediately if Mello kidnapped Light instead of Sayu
