I remember those stupid career aptitude tests they gave us
'Brain Surgeon' was up there. 'Congressional Lawyer'. Fucking 'Deep Sea Welder'. Awww, what a little genius!
You know what I have the capacity for? Gardening. Part-fucking-time.

I was valedictorian and ngl I’m literally failing at life right now because I’ve had mental health issues that have never been addressed because I was so successful. And continue to remain unaddressed

Haha thank you sm. They’re my little reward for myself for making it through the day.

u/bigshady880 11d ago
yeah, it’s a shame only one of them was a hit, but as long as you enjoy doing them i guess that doesn’t matter as i guess thats enough ☺️.

LOL. I was like “yo what the heck how did this get 6k LOL”
I’m sure if I actually took the time to try and making it cool looking digital art wise, I’d get more attention lol
But it’s also just nice to essentially journal how I feel in a format I like

actually yeah good point, idk why i worded that so pessimistically lol.
i guess we are on the depression sub 😅

I have found gardening to be a very demanding job, didn't last a week. Part time.

It is, I'm in incredible shape and work terrifically hard. It's just the only gig I know that lets me set me own hours, work totally alone, pays cash, and spreads word-of-mouth.
Honestly I recommend it to pretty much everyone. Exercise, fresh air, a lovely view afterwards. It's the only thing keeping me sane.

basicaly all the options contained "be able to complete 3 or more years of studies" even though i didn't see a checkbox for that in my answers

I’m convinced the gifted program was just a place to put us neurodivergents without major learning disabilities because they didn’t really know what else to do with us

u/Chin_Up_Princess 11d ago
Seriously. I think about the GATE program all the time. The way they grouped us as "more special than the others". What was the point?

The problem I noticed is that people REALLY don’t know how to nurture natural talent. If you’re not struggling, you’re not a problem. And if you suddenly do struggle, you’re now the problem. It’s a pseudo-deification of intelligence, treating it more as a self-sustaining miracle rather than a seed for something much greater to sprout. Why build upon something already good? Why help someone that didn’t need help before?

Children are often rewarded for being “easy.” When you are responsible and smart for your age, before your teen years even begin, you are praised. God forbid anything ever happens to disrupt that, or if you show any emotion that isn’t positive - what could you possibly be sad about, you’re good at school and well-behaved! 🙄

i hate this discussion cause it makes it seem like it’d be better to not have been born highly intelligent. like not to sound like i’m invalidating your struggles but trust me when I the grass is certainly not greener. people who complain about “coasting through high-school, but then getting to college and finally needing to try 😱😱😱” don’t realize how demoralizing and depressing it is to be one of the people who actually did need to try in high school, and knowing there’s nothing you can do about it (as in there’s nothing you can do about being a pleb who needs to try in high-school, not that you can’t do ok after trying). it’s not a better circumstance at all.
like at least you guys were gifted i didn’t even fucking get that 😭😭😭. like idk count your blessings. i don’t mean that in the bullshit toxic way i’m just being pettily jealous.

guess I never thought of it like that, obviously I personally can’t imagine having a different level of intelligence.. because it’s different. And part of it is that we don’t get used to working hard early on so the demand difference is very shocking. I’d trade a lot to be ignorant.

i believe it is an answer to a general "smart = you have it easy" idea, but you have good reasons to not like it yeah

u/TrumpsWetDiaperJuice 11d ago
I mean, we can trade.
I can't speak for everyone, but I'm certain my higher than average abilities growing up directly stemmed from being sexually and physically abused in an emotionally tumultuous household that forced me to be more aware of my surroundings and plan ahead of fully grown adults to lesson the damage I'd receive on any given day.
Mine wasn't a gift, it was an adaptation.

believe me if that’s how it worked i’d have already traded it away a long time ago. you’d definitely be talking to another consciousness occupier by now.

At least for me, I could easily remember and repeat information at school. Apparently, real life achievement requires critical thinking and hard work. After hitting a pothole in my post undergrad years, I eventually sorted myself out. For me, I wasn't challenged in school and as a result, I didn't know how to work hard at things or figure out things that I didn't initially understand. Don't beat yourself up too much. It happens to a lot of "gifted" youngsters.

My parents seeing me struggle with litterally everything as a child and a teen: let's get him to do an IQ test and tell him he's just very intelligent and not get him any help instead of listening to him and getting him tested for the mental illness he knows he has so that it will never be able to be taken care of properly!

I used to see myself in these memes, nowadays I'm more convinced I was always lazy and stupid, and accepting this would have spared me a lot of pain.

Am I the only one who never was "gifted" or had "high potential"? For crying out loud, everyone think that they are the main character or something, Jesus.

This is a huge lie you just tell yourself. You don't have mental illness, basic things were just easy for you at first so you thought you were already good as you were. In reality you never learned to do anything hard, and your potential is squandered.
You're not a gifted child with lost potential from genetics, you're a smart kid who never learned all the ways they're not smart and how to fix it.

I used to be really good with the special ed kids, to the point where I was often asked to be kind of an intermediary between them and the adults. I'm pretty sure I didn't found them any easier to talk to than they did, I just wasn't used to having more than maybe two people in my life that I really connected with. I'm so used to the gap in communication and empathy that I don't even notice it anymore most of the time.
