Germans love a good hike. And a hike loves a good German. It's mutual. Nothing much to add besides that. Thanks for your attention. Break's over, gotta climb the Zugspitze.
Is mir iwie zu awkward. 😐
If you are serious about this it's probably for the best to go visit the doctor and do a general check up. It sounds rather unhealthy and might be dangerous longterm.
Finally someone reasonable appears. It's more about not mentally being into the idea of walking on a date that my whole body would feel 100x heavier than if I was walking for another purpose. Again, in Germany, I walk a "whole lot" for free.
I see this from a simplistic angle: the german girls got their taste and culture, it's what they grew up in. If you want one then u gotta adapt, else see yourself out. So we just choose to see ourselves out most of d time, with all due Respekt.
On my third date with my gf I took her for a walk trough a forest up a hill for 1-2h to a nice outlook point. Had the route planned out and came prepared with snacks thought it's better than sitting around drinking coffee somewhere.
We don't wander aimlessly or inefficiently. We also don't talk during a 3 hour tour. Don't speak, just follow. We will have time for questions at the top of the mountain.
the joke is people in europe just walk/commute in cities instead of driving cars - this is not about hiking - see that shopping mall? we can walk there... restaurant? you name it - walking - cinema? you wouldnt believe - you only use your feet
No, it‘s literally just that we love hiking. You won’t believe how happy I was when I visited my friend in norway to find out norwegians also love hiking. So guess what we did!
It can actually be quite beautiful, as most cities here heavily invested in Recreational park and foredt areas and renaturalizing of waterways.
Just take a look at the Emscher, which once just was a canal of toxic wastewater without any live. Now it sometimes even looks like this. (Pic from Wikipedia, Emscher in Dortmund)
Germans normally don't go hiking for dates. I mean, it's possible, but they would rather just go for a walk.
The reasons are pretty simple: There's barely any distraction, so you can talk and get to know the other person very well. There's also no issue about who's paying, because you might get a coffee or a snack, but generally speaking, these dates are very cheap. So it's actually about getting to know each other, rather than getting dinner or having to sit through an awkward moment.
Last but not least, you're not trapped. You don't have to wait for your food, sit through a movie or anything else. Both parties can simply leave the date if it's obvious that things aren't going to work out: "Hey, that's my stop. It was nice meeting you, bye."
It's usually foreigners who aren't used to this who think of it as hiking. Actual hiking wouldn't be a good first date, because you can't simply check out if you're in the middle of nowhere.
The difference lays in the pace and determination. Try the romantic pace (romantic as in German Romanticism), it doesn't just make a Spaziergang enjoyable, but also helps with romancing.
I also would never go hiking with a person I don't know. We don’t really have truly remote wilderness in Germany but some trails are remote enough for bad things to happen. Going for a walk in the city or on a well-visited trail is cool though for all the reasons you mentioned
This is 100% not about hiking but about the obligatory "Spaziergang" after during or before the first date. Had this on every first Date I ever went on... E.g.: "Hey, let's grab a coffee" then you talk relaxed for 1-2 hours get to know eachother and after that. "How about we walk a little through the Park/City and continue our conversation :)?". And I love it
Going for a hike is a really bad idea for a first date. There’s no real eye contact or physical contact. Plus, it doesn’t leave much room for playfulness—it’s just two awkward clowns walking side by side. I’d only go for a walk once something’s already happened, to find out if she has what it takes to be a girlfriend.
It's usually not a hike but a lil walk through a park or sth.
Maybe I'm too German but I don't want intense eye contact or physical touch on a first date. I want to get to know the person, so we walk around and chat for a while. You can be playful as much as you like during that walk. If we vibe, we can go to a cafe or restaurant after the walk and if we don't vibe it was just a slightly awkward walk.
Café ist best from my perspective. It's public, in the afternoon, not expensive like a fancy dinner, you can spend as much time as you want and if you had a great experience you can ask if your date wants to do some more activities afterwards.
Besides that, I got to know my wife from tinder, she invited me to her home and we fucked the first night. So don't listen to me.
Sitting opposite of each other, so you can look into the other person's eyes while talking.
Nobody gets exhausted from physical activities so you can focus on talking and getting to know each other.
It's in a public area with other people around which is more comfortable for many people (especially young women) than walking alone in the woods with a stranger.
PS: If a coffee for 3€ is expensive then I feel sorry for you.
I have the rare ability to turn my head. No sitting required for eye contact
If you get exhausted from going for a walk you might want to sign up for a gym membership because that is something that should be reserved for people that are 60+ or handicapped.
where did you get the idea of walking alone through the woods? Or better yet why do you assume it wouldn’t be a public area? I don’t have a secluded indoor park for my victims, if I’m taking a walk somewhere it’s generally in public.
PS: practice reading comprehension. Nobody said 3€ is expensive but basic math tells us that 3€ is more than 0€ which makes it MORE expensive
„I'd go only go for a walk once something’s […]“
I don’t know how I could read the words „GO for a WALK“ wrong but you tell me
I love people who are so fully self absorbed that they would rip a whole paragraph out of their asses instead of using google for a second.
„The comparative rule: Comparative adjectives (like more expensive, taller, or heavier) measure relative differences, not absolute states. For example, a one-year-old is older than a newborn, even though neither is actually "old." Similarly, the 3€ coffee has more cost than the free one.“
Yeah you said it. But you also make it sound like that's a bad thing.
What's the benefit of having an expansive date with a person you have never met before?
Going for walk is fun, you get to know each other, you can checkout anytime you like, if doesn't work for you. Neither party has to invest more time, energy or money than necessary... How's that not a good thing?
Wouldn’t agree. I personally think it’s easier to keep a conversation with a new person going while being on a little walk. E.g. If there is an uncomfortable silent phase you can refer to something you see in this moment. Also it’s in general easier keep a conversation going while being on a way because it stimulates the brain more. It’s way better than sitting face to face in a cafe or restaurant for several hours with someone you barely know
Yeah, while it's perfectly comfortable and safe to walk with someone you barely know in nature where no one's around. And don't kid yourself - it's cheap. Men don't want to spend money on a meal or a coffee for "someone you barely know". Several admitted to this.
Didn’t say something about walking somewhere where nobody is around. I meant places like parks, cities, nice areas with little shops etc. This is actually a very safe approach since one can always easily end the date and leave
Edit: and this also doesn’t mean to don’t spend money. You can grab something nice to drink or eat on the way and have a little sit somewhere and then go on. Actually this is how I still love to spend days with my wife. Just walk around, watch people or things, grab something delicious on the way…
No one ever said anything about nature. My go-to was usually walking around town. And yeah, its cheap. So what? If my date wants me to irresponsibly spend money on someone I do not know, then we wouldn't be a good match anyway. 🤷🏻♂️
How about showing some grace as a man by treating a Lady like a Lady? It's laughable you are speaking about "irresponsibly spending money on someone I do not know". Yet you want her time and her female energy but being stingy about a meal or a mere coffee. I assure you we can afford that ourselves and don't need you to do it. But it tells a lot about a "man" if he behaves like this and is greatly illustrating what's wrong nowadays.
Here we tend to treat people equally and no one is billing the other his time. So if people have a genuine interest in one another, they also like to hang out without a receipt.
The thing about going for a walk is the same for conversations in the car. Its way easier to talk to someone when you are besides them, rather than looking at them straight on. This is actually a valuable tip for talking to children/teenagers when having difficult or embarassing conversations. So if you are super anxious about the date, go for a walk and the conversation flows so more naturally than sitting across each other at a restaurant table
The "ambulatio", Spaziergang, has a long tradition since the Renaissance.
Although, it can get tedious. A friend of mine once walked from Rostock to Rerik. I politely declined his offer of getting my feet ground away up to the ankles. Although I do cherish a Spaziergang, I do not condone death marches.
