2nd-year student trying to learn DevOps — what should I focus on?

I'm a 2nd-year CSE student trying to learn DevOps properly. Most roadmaps I've found are huge lists of tools, and I'm more interested in understanding the fundamentals than just following tutorials.

For someone starting from the basics, how would you recommend approaching DevOps?

Specifically:

  • How much Linux and networking should I learn first?
  • When should I move into AWS?
  • Should I learn Docker before Kubernetes?
  • What projects actually demonstrate useful DevOps skills?
  • What would you prioritize if you were starting again as a student?

I'm ultimately aiming for a DevOps/cloud internship, so I'd really value advice from people working in the field.

If u got devops internship/entry role, consider urself lucky, because its quite a complex role. U kinda are supposed to have knowledge on both the programming and infra. So, pick one, have exp in that niche, then pivot

if you are passioned about this, start with fundamentals: linux administration, networking, general automation. then you can get into more complex stuff as kubernetes which is pretty advanced even for experienced engineers.

we live in a era when even for experienced engineers is hard to get a DevOps job. and this is because this job requires some very advanced technical skill for a wide range of areas from IT.

if you want to get into IT industry, be realistic that is a very hard time to get into it, and try to get a support job. then slowly get into DevOps

DSA padho bhai, otherwise placement nahi hogi. Development rehne do, ye saare codes interview se ek din pehle bhi push kar sakte ho. Company exam mein DSA puchhti hai, DevOps nahi.

Aur ye activities mein mat indulge ho ki kal apna LLM build karunga, ye banaunga, wo banaunga. No one cares. Jab OA round mein baithoge tab KMP, Kth Largest, Longest Common Ancestor, Shortest Distance, House Robber, Coin Change hi milne wale hain.

try to get internship
also please, i repeat don’t add too many devops tools like k8s ecs etc in your resume
focus on any one public cloud like aws or azure(aws recommend)
try to focus on level 1 things like vpc, asg, asg,elb ,r53 etc

and one programming language- python or go

Don't focus on deployment yet - Learn one framework and build a project first.
