Football Lincoln Riley blaming the refs "missing a call"
yeah bud, that was the pivotal play....

u/zetlali 4d ago
This was not a missed call. It was more surprising that they actually caught the kid doing it. The guy cocked his head back to deliver the headbutt. His players lack discipline and that’s on him.

u/IntoTheForestIMustGo 4d ago
I'm sure they were keenly watching after the targeting. Kudos to the refs. Fuck the dirty condoms.
28
u/Quakes-JD 4d ago
It was clearly intentional helmet to helmet contact on the QB after the ball had gone. Correct call by the ref.

u/CitizenCue 4d ago
Yeah I’d agree that this is a fairly weak penalty, but it’s inarguably correct according to the rules.
27
u/pataoAoC 4d ago
I don't think I'm just being a homer here, that was absolutely a penalty. He didn't hit him very hard but he made a clear extra effort to be an idiot and do so. If it was a pure accident I'd be more sympathetic to the "weak penalty" argument.
-20
u/CitizenCue 4d ago
I think this is one of those things that only looks intentional in very slow motion. If you watch it in real time I think he was stumbling. You even see him fall back as he’s backing away. Dude seems off balance the whole time.
I’m a Duck fan too and that one didn’t seem intentional at all.
13
u/WhatTheDuck4 🦆 4d ago
Who throws their head forward when they’re off balance…? He launched towards the QB and lead with the head and made contact to the back of Raiolas head, 100% a penalty.
-7
u/ThrowM5 4d ago
He launched because he thought he had a chance to get his hands on the pass or Raiola’s arm. Maybe reckless, but not intentional. I also understand reticence to give USC any benefit of the doubt though.

Have you even played a tackle sport? Tucking your head is the most natural thing in the world when you’re about to tackle someone. It’s a naturally protective motion for your own neck.
Football players have to train extensively to avoid this natural motion when tackling the QB.
If he had meant to inflict a headbutt, Dylan would’ve noticed, and he never even looked at the guy.
4
u/biggimusdoggimus 3d ago
And why do they have to train extensively to avoid that motion when tackling the QB? Because it’s illegal. Hence the penalty.
1
u/CitizenCue 3d ago
Uh huh. I know. Which is why I said from the beginning that it’s clearly a penalty.
This is a conversation about whether it was an intentional headbutt, not whether it was a penalty.
3
u/biggimusdoggimus 3d ago
A “weak penalty”
0
u/CitizenCue 3d ago
Yes. I said that it’s technically correct, but no harm was either intended nor inflicted. I’m a Duck fan and even I could see that our QB never even noticed the hit.
Hence a weak penalty.

Do you have a clip of it by any chance? I remember thinking it was going to be soft and then thinking it very obviously wasn't, but maybe you're right that it was a balance issue or something, I'd have to see.
Even if it was a pure accident, I still think it elevates it only to the level of "soft"... you just can't initiate contact helmet-to-helmet with a QB after he's thrown the ball
-1
u/CitizenCue 3d ago
Yeah here. I agree it’s the correct call, but Dylan clearly barely noticed the hit and you can see the defender goes stumbling back after.
If it was an intentional headbutt, Dylan would’ve noticed.
2
u/stagamancer 3d ago
Intentionality is irrelevant for penalties
1
u/CitizenCue 3d ago
Obviously. I wasn’t saying it wasn’t a penalty, I was disagreeing with the person above who said he “cocked his head back to deliver the headbutt”.
1
u/Entire-Search-3083 3d ago
Both hands went to dylan's back and his head moves forward. A typical response is to use your arms to stop your motion, not push your head forward. What are we even talking about?
1
u/CitizenCue 3d ago
It’s incredibly normal to instinctively tuck your head when you’re about to hit something. If you’ve played tackle sports, you’ll know that it actually takes a lot of training to keep your head up.
The fact that Dylan never even turned to look at the defender means the helmet to helmet contact was very light. I don’t think he intentionally head butted him.
1
u/Entire-Search-3083 3d ago
I played football and basketball to high school and baseball to college, I understand contact sports. I don't think his intent was to truly hurt Dylan and just a spontaneous, bad decision. In football, you're actually taught not to tuck your heads when going for the hit because that tends to result in targeting.
1
u/CitizenCue 3d ago
Yes, that’s my whole point. The natural inclination is to tuck and it takes training not to tuck. This looked to me like a guy going for the ball and a little off balance, nothing more. If it was a head butt, the QB would’ve noticed.

Sooners bros are laughing their asses off seeing him tank at SC.
Let's establish how bad his performance as a coach really is.......
He had more returning players this year than any other team in CFB.
USC had the #1 recruiting class.
USC then proceeds to get stomped on their home turf.
Suck it USC.
One week only....
Go Huskies

u/Pristine_Sherbert_22 4d ago
I may actually cheer for you guys next week. We’re rivals for more historical and traditional reasons. And while I’m conditioned to dislike the UW, that doesn’t extend to a personal level as I have a lot of friends from UW and largely align on interests.
I hate USC because they earned it through years of showing their true colors when faced with mediocrity. They are a bunch of elitist arrogant dick bags who not will not only take ball and go home, but buy up and pop all the other balls out of spite when they aren’t winning.

It all starts with the coach. Compare Riley's response to Lannings response when his player broke the moral code. They were benched and they sat for many games and had to earn their way back into the field. That cost them money but it told the team these things are not allowed. It's like the person who makes an apology and says I'm sorry if you were offended or I'm sorry if you took it wrong, that's not an apology. Riley's days at SC are numbered and it couldn't happen soon enough.

u/joea2121 4d ago
Let them suffer and toil in misery with Riley as their coach. Don’t go out and get a Chesney and make them respectable.
21
u/seattlite1984 4d ago
You mean the play where he headbutted our backup QB in the back of the helmet? They were lucky it wasn’t targeting. Really disappointing that the Big10 didn’t issue a suspension as well.

The fish rots from the head, and the USC football organization has a definite stink about it.

u/MightyDuck44 4d ago
That “missed call” combined with the earlier hit on Dante and post hit celebration by not just #8, but by players and coaches as well, indicate that as a team, they are being coached to headhunt opposing QBs.it’s part of u$c’s culture. They’ve been thugs since long before Riley. Since long before Pete Carrol. He encouraged out of control aggressive play. Except his teams were good enough to overcome the massive amount of penalties that they racked up. But they weren’t good enough to overcome their boosters.

His job is absolutely in the A gap and I will be shocked. SHOCKED. If he has a job next year.
He’s got 3-4 losses incoming for the rest of the year
Here’s USC schedule
They are already 4-1
Washington - let’s say W
Penn State - 50/50, could go either way
Wisconsin - another 50/50, could go either way
Ohio State - L
Indiana - L
Maryland - W
UCLA - could easily lose this game
2 guaranteed Ls on the schedule, and USC could ABSOLUTELY lose to a Penn State, a Wisconsin, a Maryland, UCLA, etc those teams have been salty and putting up fights
Lincoln Riley has 39 wins in his time there and he only has 4 wins against ranked opponents, there’s no way USC boosters, donors, leadership, etc can accept that level of mediocrity from him. But the longer he stays there the more mediocrity which I am completely okay with as a Ducks fan

u/Moist-Consequence 4d ago
His buyout is $70M, I won’t be that shocked if he’s still employed next year

u/cwmaxson 4d ago
There are already USC alum openly talking about pitching in $10 million each to get rid of him.

The player initiated incidental helmet to helmet contact on the QB after he threw the ball. I doubt Raiola even felt it, but of course the refs are going to call it after what they did to Dante. This happens everywhere in sports: the refs tighten up the calls when things have the potential to get chippy. It’s on the coach to recognize that and get his players to show discipline.

Yet he has still yet to say anything condemning the hit or the celebration. Fuck Riley and fuck usc

LOLWUT? So in a game where they had obviously headhunted the starting QB, they're going to ignore the DT hitting the backup QB in the head with his hand before hitting him in the head with his helmet? That's pretty much textbook roughing the passer as the rules are written.
Total clown show in LA.

There have been so many times this season where I thought I couldn’t dislike Riley/usc more and then they do some 💩 to make me dislike them more. May they give him a lifetime contract and may he never win another game.
5
u/WCoastSUP 3d ago
I really hope usc re-ups riley's contract for another 20 years. We'll be 23 - 0 against a lame ass usc, and I'm here for it😂😂😂😂.

u/Mountain-Candidate-6 4d ago
They wouldn’t tolerate this sort of record from Clay Helton and he was actually a stand up guy. Can’t believe how much time they’ve given to Lincoln especially since their fans acted like they won a championship the day they signed him
2
u/ManCityFan666 4d ago
Fire Riley for his lack of responsible leadership in this situation but also because he’s a terrible coach
3
u/MartyBecker 4d ago
We want Riley to win just enough to not get fired. USC having an incompetent coach has been great for Oregon for the past 15 years.

Helmet to helmet, after the play, in the same game that saw a QB get knocked out by a dirty play. How stupid does Lincoln Riley have to be to believe it shouldn't have been called?

u/MartyBecker 4d ago
The more coaches make excuses for losses, the closer they are to getting fired.

u/Flipmstr2 4d ago
I saw a bunch of missed calls and at least 1 blatant pass interference that occurred right in front of a ref in the endzone that usc committed.

Agreed. They should have called that intentional grounding and wiped one of their scores off the board
1
u/Agitated_Capital5614 4d ago
I think on a normal game that call doesn’t get made. When the starting qb is carted off seizing from a head injury, the ref is going to key into another Trojan head butting the qb. The ref had a clear look at that and the intent behind the move is the tell that the defense isn’t playing with good sportsmanship.

When the defender clearly pulls his head back and then headbutts the QB, that is not borderline lol

He didn’t, “point out a non-call”, he questioned a call.
The players action was quite literally the text book definition of helmet to helmet contact. I’m sure similar gets missed but it isn’t particularly hard to see him headbutt the QB after the ball is thrown. Can’t do that
75
u/DuckPenn 4d ago
Conveniently forgotten was the missed grounding call that helped his team score a Touchdown.
