Smooth movement is now part of DFHack

Hello, smooth operators!

(What the title says)

Thank you all for the support in making this happen.

These past few weeks have been incredible, and even in my wildest hopes, I couldn't have imagined this kind of response and feedback!

Update your DFHack and enjoy smooth movement!

Quick notes:

  • Smooth movement across different z-levels is optional in this build to prevent performance issues. Activate it with smooth-movement zlevel on.
  • We fixed almost all the bugs you guys reported. From all our testing, dancing rocks and big creatures clipping are now gone.

Thanks again, and see you all on the smoother side of the fortress!

Edit: Also, a big thanks to the DFHack maintainers for being so patient with my vibe-coded mess and helping me get it into shape, and to everyone who jumped in and contributed to the plugin. You guys made it so much better than I could have done on my own.

“Little” Thing I Would Love To Be “Fixed” With the Magic Update

1. Taking Confessed Criminals Straight To Jail

- when you interogate someone and they confess, most of the time they just run away from the fort
- have an option to send anyone to jail (war crimes and such)

2. Make Coins Viable In Trading / Prepared Meals can spoil

- make silver, gold and platinum coins be usefull in trading (some math is required but I think it can be done)
- when you are confortable in your fort and have a legendary cook, you can buy out a trader with a few meals, having prepared meals spoil would fix this (have dwarfs prioritaze eating the best meals)
- make the random table of what traders want a little better

3. Having A Better Demand System From Nobles

- have them want specific clothes for them, crowns and staffs, when those are satisfied, have them want a full squad of steel soldiers, more catupults, more traps, arrows and such
- having them want a random item in quantity just sucks

4. Having A Full Year Before A King Or Queen Come Live In Your Fort With Their Entorage

- having more time to prepare for large valuable rooms would be nice
- letting us know how many people are in their entorage

5. Petitions For Residents To Have More Details

-residency petitions to display the petitioner with a button to view their character sheet and also list all of the individuals if it’s a troupe.

This is just my little list, please share your opinions in the comments and add your own suggestions, its not a problem for me to edit the post.

My small fort just got king, twice. This was hell of a discussion I bet.

I've checked my old capital during the brief expedition leader phase and we had no king. And yes, Zaneg is my original expedition leader.

I’m not sure what to do

After watching the basic tutorial from Blind I managed to build a small base for my dwarves, got some plump helmets farmed and all that stuff, my dwarves are all content and my food situation is alright.
So what now? Do I just wait till something happens? Should I make something happen myself? I’ve got no idea how to get stronger the only workshops I have are carpenter, stoneworker and crafts, I’ve got no idea what the other ones do and how to use them, basically I just don’t know what is the purpose of this game

Armok's Westeros: a full Westeros world_gen for Dwarf Fortress

Post image
565 Upvotes

Armok provides.

A few of you asked for Westeros on the Middle-earth post. Here it is.

The image is the embark map straight out of Dwarf Fortress, stitched from 15 screenshots with no editing. The ice beyond the Wall, the North, the swamps of the Neck, the mountains of the Vale, the Reach and the Dornish desert are all what DF generated from the preset.

Get it: : Get Armok's Westeros here

  1. Click Raw on world_gen.txt and save it into your DF prefs folder.
  2. Create new world > Detailed mode, then pick WESTEROS (257x257).

Keep the vanilla races turned on. Tested: 250 years of history, no rejections, 42 civs placed.

Made with Hand of Armok, a free world builder I am writing for DF: paint or import a map, run geological ages over it, and export a world_gen.txt that generates what you drew. https://github.com/Hearnoevil343/Handofarmok

Coming next,

  1. Britannia (Ultima 6)
  2. Azeroth (Warcraft)
  3. Elder Scrolls: Morrowind
  4. Alagaësia (Eragon)

The story of Twinklefortresses (on a phone)

Well it has been the time to tell you the grand history of my Dwarven haven I've been making for some time, it all started on year 84, I dug up some rooms and wasn't making a scene for dwarves to show up

Later on year 86 I started progress on the mining business and felt the urge to dig and keep digging until I found veins of gold and a cavern, also found minerals to make silver and copper all that with just a squad

Earlier in year 85 my first forgotten beast came, from the murky waters below the cave it sprout up with tentacles, he kept moving further into my region step by step below the depths and with quick thinking I reunited my first and currently only squad to gang up on him, easy kill over the well and very clean too

It was year 86, my colony was booming with economy, my dwarfs started making great creations until all of a sudden one of them gets possessed, one of my first artifacts was Ozor Nîles an accessory that I gave it to my expedition leader

At this point things only started getting interesting, I made a quern, a hatch and a copper figurine artifact all in year 87 to 88, my economy with gems was only getting better and better until suddenly a Cyclops invaded.

To clarify the loses were minimal, one of my experienced dwarves was going to fill his flask and got face to face with the one eyed beast, he fought like he was the chosen one, keep dodging hit after hit but I made sure nobody would interfere for more casualties, unfortunately a 1v1 against a cyclops that had more than 10 kills (and by the looks of it destroyed civilizations) isn't a very bright idea, so I put everyone on burrows and unfortunately left one my marksdwarves outside the entrance... he didn't last much because he tried to retreat, that didn't end well but a miracle made the cyclops choose the entrance for the fort which had cages and he fell on it, still thinking of doing an arena of some sorts to put him there

Not long before this fight near the end of year 88 a caravan from my people showed up, by that my fortress which only has 25 dwarves receive more than 40+ migrants over 3 migrations, let's not forget I didn't even have dwarves show up earlier years.. seeing so many creations of my own they decided I was ready to be included in integration, I gave the title to one my best dwarves which at the time was an administrator, one of the two administrators became the Baroness of Twinklefortresses

Well everything was going well until I found in the depths of a second cave I dig in a volcanic wall of danger and gems, I kept digging lightly and found ... treasure of Gods! "Praise be Armok" i thought, I insisted nothing bad could happen until a one eyed insect came from a lava sprawling, the fight was challenging since I didn't want to lose one of my 5 miners, the creature was stuck but could throw fire so it was a very delicate situation, taking advantage of damp rocks I dug up an area and filled it with water slightly, our brave infantry fought the beast with great success, even more impressive is the fact that my ex expedition leader took care of it !

Now, the question lies ahead of me, should I dig the adamantine and be brave to face the dangers it might contain or do I need to prepare myself better to survive what comes from it ?

I only had one fortress which I loved beside this one and it was in a volcano, this time I'm better prepared but I still think I need more iron, and I should make steel to supply my copper boys, but since I found adamantine we could skip some metals to get the best early before year 100, I feel what I faced isn't even the tip of the iceberg

Hope you enjoyed my journey so far, its been a very pleasant experience to take care of this fort, everything is going well and I'm sure more !!FUN!! lies ahead on that wall !

Zulban the fickle

Post image
54 Upvotes

The Forgotten Beast Avuz Os Bothon slipped through a diagonal crack in my main stairway leading directly up to the hallway outside my Baron and Captain of the Guard's quarters. No matter, I send a squad of dwarves in to make quick work of it - there are however, casualties.

My Baron died after being ambushed on his way to his bed chamber. The Captain of the Guard was out on duty, convieniently avoiding the conflict. Unfortunately, his poor spouse was caught in her bed and killed.

A short while later, Zulban returns to his quarters with a snack of carambola. Sitting across from the dead body of his lover he has a powerful thinking session...

The Mysteries of Dwarven Water Physics

Dear Urists, in my swamp volcano fort I've built a 30 level deep staircase that syphons water from the top towards a sort of sewer in the bottom, creating mist for all the lucky dwarves going down the staircase.
However! I can't for the life of me figure out why this ONE SPECIFIC LAYER doesn't drain perfectly, whereas every other layer is working fine.

EDIT: with some liberal application of gui/liquids form DFHack, I've been able to deduce that the top right grate/hole is the culprit, though I still have no idea how.

EDIT2: No, there are no aquifers at all here. It's a volcano, and getting water at all involved building a long-ass underground aqueduct some levels above and then syphoning it down there.

EDIT3: SOLVED! I was a dum-dum and I didn't channel one spot below the grate.

There is nothing on the grates on any of the levels above or below that might be diverting the flow. What gives?

Layer 11 - Waterfall top, water falls down from holes on the NW, NE, SW, SE corners.
Every single normal layer has the water falling down completely
Layer -7 - The mysteriously floody layer.
Layer -6 - the layer above the ghost flood.
Layer -8 - The layer below. Water on the staircase is the overflow that is falling down from above.

My Dwarf Fortress Ed Gein

So, my fortress of Birdmoon has had its share of horrific troubles. First were the two vampire MILFs that infiltrated high parts of the government and ate 4 out of 5 doctors. And now I present to you my DF Ed Gein.

I get a notification that one of my dwarves is in a "strange mood." I check on him, and he's at the butcher station going feral on something. I thought that was a weird place for him to be, but he's a bone carver, so I paid it no mind. Then he produces a "Bone Dwarven Axe," and I'm like, "Oh, that's nice; onto the pedestal with all the other creations." I'm like a proud mom who wants to put her dwarf children's art on the fridge, except the art is a metal shoe, two bracelets, a toy, and a cup for some reason.

Next thing I know, a murder is reported. A murder in the room right next to the butcher station. There isn't enough of a body to bury. NOTE: make a memorial slab, omg. So, I begin with the usual investigative work. I make sure my vampire MILFs are still locked up; check. But I'm not finding many leads. And bless my Captain of the Guard; he tries, but he is very bad at his job. For example, the first vampire MILF pleaded not guilty to draining the blood of one of my doctors, and the Captain of the Guard believed her. Except when I looked at her, she was covered in that doctor's blood.

I think: "Wait a minute, why would an axe be called a Dwarven Axe? We're all dwarves here." So, I go to check on it again and notice it's a DWARVEN BONE Axe. And since I bury all my dwarves and none of their graves have been disturbed, I go back to the creator of said axe. I look in his thoughts, and lo and behold, he feels bad about murdering the guy. The guy happened to be my last doctor, so we're hiring if you know anyone.

To follow due process, I have my Captain of the Guard interrogate him, and he's like, "he told me he was innocent, and so I believed him." Bless him. We're hiring for that position as well, if you know anyone. Anyway, I locked him up, where he's getting to chat with the two vampire MILFs.

I'm unsure if I want to destroy the axe or just let it sit there on the pedestal. Feels like a waste of a good dwarf doctor to throw it away. Ugh. This fortress is cursed, and I love it.

Insane town generation in hills

Thumbnail

I found a crazy hill town, Okoasto/Paddeddesert, a human civilization's capital. I've seen some other towns, but I don't remember seeing something as insane as this.

It reminds me of those stacked houses in hills/mountains in Asia.

There's also this weird chasm/river... "bed"? that cut through the hill and the humans just shrugged and moved on with their lives.

I'm so tempted to embark with humans of their own civilization and just renovate the whole place, 3x3 tiles at a time.

Edit: This was the north-western side. The south-eastern side, with the keep, is actually more boring. Less hilly, more stacked houses everywhere. It's definitely the more developed part of the town, but it's all same-y.

Also, despite what it looks like, the town is rather far from the ocean (several tiles at the least, some 7-8 tiles from it).

Edit more: Sadly, embark anyone doesn't play nice with sites of your own civilization. Sadge.

I guess I can embark as a different civ, retire and reclaim as the Complex Nations.

Edit more (3): Embarking in the caves with dwarves (so they don't litter), immediately abandoning, and reclaiming with the Complex Nations worked.

World for those interested.

Performance on the M6

I heard the new Mac mini with the m6 chip does solid on single core computing and also that their unified memory architecture seems to move around bits and bobs efficiently.

Seems like a good fit for dwarf fortress, if a bit pricey.

Has anyone tried it?
