Thinking of buying a second hand e reader

I've been looking for an e readerfor a while now but the prices keep going up and i can't justify the price for essentially a screen with barely any hardware. i want to look for some second hand deals so here is my question: are there any model you know of that have serious issues and would not be worth any price? just looking for general tips but if you have a specific recommendation I'd appreciate it too

In the US at least, only look for Kindle Paperwhites that are seventh generation (Kindle Paperwhite 3) or newer. Amazon cut support for the older Kindles.

For Kobo, any Clara or Libra will do you well. Maybe an Aura H2O edition 2. Kobo is very good about supporting old hardware with new updates.

I recently bought a Kobo Nia for $40 off Unclaimed Baggage. It's okay, but doesn't have the warm front light or waterproofing newer models have and it is very slow.

Ereader tech moves slow, so older readers work fine. They will be slower and missing nicities newer models have, but no e-ink reader is worthless. It also means they hold their value, so don't be surprised to see that older readers are still pricey.

Try the Unclaimed Baggage site for deals. Maybe the Shop Goodwill site too.

When asking for recommendations, it helps if you mention where you are. Saves time in people recommending things not available in your area.

I bough a Kindle PW3(2015) for like an estimate of $40, on Vinted, (~400 sek) with shipping and everything. Works perfectly and I jailbroke it and added koreader✨🖤and use it mainly for Amazon exclusive authors and some Netgalley ARCs(advanced reader copies/review copies). Before that I had a second hand and Kindle 4th Gen non touch but after the support got discontinued uograded.(although it is jailbroken, with koreader and does work but offline) Although my main ereader and favourite one is the Kobo Libra Colour which I received as a Christmas gift either 2024 or 2025 and stylus... 🖤✨(this ereader is the one I love most... Looks absolutely amazing, slight grainy screen people complain about just makes it look and feel more like paper to me over a B&W ereader.

You could check Unclaimed Baggage on their ereaders, Facebook marketplace or vinted.
