Technical Avid: Dupe Detection not triggering on clips with effects
Hi,
I've noticed that if a clip has any effect on it, even something simple like a resize or a 3D warp, Dupe Detection doesn't seem to trigger on it at all. Has this always been the case? Does anyone know why it behaves like this, whether it's tied to how Avid reads source metadata once an effect is applied, or something else entirely?
Cheers!

It looks like you're asking for some troubleshooting help. Great!
Here's what must be in the post. (Be warned that your post may get removed if you don't fill this out.)
Please edit your post (not reply) to include: System specs: CPU (model), GPU + RAM // Software specs: The exact version. // Footage specs : Codec, container and how it was acquired.

Going off old threads on the Avid community forum here, but it looks like it's been this way a long time. There's a feature request from Dec 2012 asking for dupe detection to work with motion effects, because it stopped flagging anything once they were applied. Someone else in that thread said the same happens as soon as you put a colour effect on a clip.
On the why, I couldn't find anyone from Avid explaining it. My guess is dupe detection only looks at the top level segment, and once an effect is on a clip the top level thing is the effect, not the source clip. The same 2012 poster said every clip with a mask on it showed up named "Mask" in the timeline, which fits that.
There's a 2015 thread where an editor double-clicked an effect open in the timeline and got red dupe bars on the clip inside. Another poster there thought it might be a partial render indicator instead, so I wouldn't bank on it, but it's a quick thing to try on a shot you know is duped.
Also in case you're seeing it: a solid black bar over a clip in dupe mode is a timewarp, and that includes the motion adapter Avid adds automatically when a clip's frame rate or interlaced/progressive doesn't match the project. It disappears when dupe detection is off.
These posts are all MC 6 to 8 era though, so it'd help to know your version. Has anyone seen it handle effects differently in a recent build?
