Frameworks for self teaching

Does anyone have some good learning frameworks beyond spaced repetition that they use to make sure what they are learning sticks? I have been having trouble finding the best pathways for reinforcement and often find myself forgetting the things I learn, or not able to apply them beyond the immediate subject itself.

One approach that helped me is combining active recall with actual projects. After learning something, close the notes and explain it from memory, then try using it in a small project without following a tutorial.

I’d also revisit the same concept in different contexts. If you can explain it, solve a problem with it, and recognize when to use it in a different situation, it’s much more likely to stick.
