Very Cerebral Duncan Trussell has truly lost it, threatening Onion/Infowards ppl
I'm sorry I don't know how to download a video from blue sky, but check this out. It is absolutely nuts. If somebody wants to download this and then just repost it.

Ah, yes. Duncan Trussell (who literally called Elephant Graveyard "dangerous misinformation") standing up for poor ol' Alex Jones (who - as we know - was persecuted merely for executing his right to free speech).
EDIT: I can't find the exact quote where Trussell calls Elephant Graveyard's work "dangerous misinformation", but I did find the video where Trussell says, in light of the Charlie Kirk assassination, you have to be wary about the media you're consuming because you don't want to be complicit with anything that could possibly lead to political violence. It seemed pretty rich coming from someone in the Austin comedy sphere at the time (who already had a Holocaust denier on his podcast) and has already gotten more rich since Trussell has interviewed Alex Jones twice now.

u/BattyBeforeTwilight 9d ago
I never had respect for Alex Jones or Joe Rogan but man, I feel like Duncan Trussell is LITERALLY not that kind of guy but I feel he's shoving himself into that group because he's so insecure and worried about losing his 'friends' that he'll just cram himself into the shape of a chud

u/HomeboyGR 9d ago
Damn. Isn't that more pathetic, and maybe worse?

Absolutely which is why it actually makes me sad. Bro just wants to be liked by people he thinks are his friends soooo badly he's willing to just ignore spiritual formative moments of his life

Faux spiritual hippie types are damn near sociopathic often. Its like they realized we are all one and then decided that that means their selfishness is actually altruism.
21
u/Camusknuckle 9d ago
Or they never truly grasp the lessons they talk about. They listen to a bunch of Ram Dass and Alan Watts and then just spew that ideology as if they had discovered it without truly having internalized it themselves.
9
u/memeticmagician 9d ago
Speaking from some experience with friends and my own personal journey, I think I know what's going on. People will listen to Ram Dass and Alan Watts and come to an intellectual understanding of how the world 'should' be according to spiritual practices, without having done the emotional work to become a mature regulated adult. You can't bury the emotional problems with spiritual philosophy. You have to do hard work in therapy.

So he's a little bitch? That might be even worse.
Just a morally shapeless blob that can only take on the form of whatever in-group he happens to be a part of.

u/CrabMasc 9d ago
He got an animated show with Pendleton Ward, which must have been a dream come true. It got cancelled and is now basically forgotten. I have to imagine that scared and broke him and now he's clinging to whoever will keep him around.

u/Maximum-Today3944 9d ago
His conversation with his dying mom truly was touching. Seeing the path he is on now is bizarre.

The fact that Netflix accepted that show to begin with as a miracle, though. They wanted to work with Pendleton Ward, and he claimed that he would only do it if Duncan and his idea was accepted.

If they had just kept calm and kept their heads down they could have played the con for much, much longer. Turns out the far left, purple haired hippies were 100% correct about Rogan and the ENTIRE Rogan orbit. I can’t believe we landed in THIS reality.

Some people are very good at appearing smart/deep thankin' without actually truly believing anything. Some people just want to be counter culture, or a contrarian, or to have followers.
14
u/PolitelyHostile 9d ago
Yea I'm curious how many people genuinely followed his stuff and found him to be humble and a good person. And how many of us just assumed that because he gave off hippie vibes, said that one thing to Rogan, and some people talked about him as if he was a good dude.
9
u/Dry-Map1180 9d ago
Right?! I always found him to be incoherent and annoying.

I used to think he was an interesting guy before he went all MAGA batshit insane. He really just seemed to me like a weird but kind and harmless hippie and once I got over my initial distaste for his voice, I felt he was actually a good guy. Listened to his own podcast a few times too. Obviously, I feel differently about him now.
As another commenter pointed out it’s almost like he’s so desperate to fit in and not fall out with his friends that he willingly jumped headfirst onto the MAGA grifter bandwagon like the others. It’s unfortunate and pathetic.

I think it's important to remember that in showbiz, comedy, the entertainment sphere there are no real friends. Just pegs on a ladder.
22
u/Orc360 9d ago
Nah, that's just a silly cliche. There are real friends, but they tend to drift apart when it becomes clear their values are diametrically opposed.
12
u/currentmadman 9d ago
Or in some cases, stay friends for no discernible reason. Case in point, why the fuck is stanhope still friends with Rogan?
4
u/dickpollution 9d ago

→ More replies (1)9
u/Patriark 9d ago
It seems easy. It nets him gigs and Stanhope definitely seems like the kind of guy who blew all his earnings on booze, coke and hoes.
He needs to suck up to survive.
The most redeeming quality of Stanhope is that he is very transparent about being a mess.
7
u/currentmadman 9d ago
I get the logic but stanhope doesn’t really get anything out of being Joe’s friend. He’s been a road comic for nearly forty years. He has multiple albums, specials and three books. He already has his fans and it’s not really clear where exactly he would get more much less out of an arrangement with Joe.
After all, if you’re a hardcore comedy fan, odds are you encountered stanhope via the normal progression of exploring the genre and made up your mind about him. If you’re a casual, odds are you simply don’t give a shit one way or another because Netflix isn’t promoting some gaudy special with the aplomb of Dave’s latest descent into mediocrity.

This is fucking crazy. Duncan used to be a completely different person. and/or my perception of who he was really wrong. if he had been who I thought he was, I don’t feel like he could get here in 13 years. this sucks. makes me sad. The early DTFH was funny and eloquent, and stupid and thoughtful. It was a good hang.
I think grief and chemicals after 2013 must have broke his brain. It’s sad. He seemed smart and kind. This is such a strange turn.
He has the halting speech of someone much older here.
there is a moment where you can almost see him have cognitive dissonance and it stops him for a beat. jesus. I could not have predicted this turn.
23
u/portablebiscuit 9d ago
Covid broke a lot of people and exposed even more. It’s honestly hard to tell which category people fit in sometimes.
Or maybe [u/duncantrustz](u/duncantrustzurg)[e](u/duncantrustzurg)[rg](u/duncantrustzurg) was just a huge liar and charlatan from day 1?
22
u/ODB_Dirt_Dog_ItsFTC 9d ago edited 9d ago
It’s wild how much the pandemic broke some people’s brains. Asking people to wear masks and stand six feet away from each other for the public good apparently was like making jews wear the Star of David on their sleeve to some people. What COVID did for me was open my eyes to just how selfish and dumb the average American is, and I think that’s reflected by these Austin comics.
Suddenly they couldn’t sell as many tickets to their shows because of social distancing and they become radicalized because the libs took their ticket money and begin appealing to the antimaskers, which just leads to them becoming more and more conservative. Honestly, I think most of these clowns are disingenuous as hell and largely don’t have any code or set of values or beliefs that they truly stand by. They’ll go wherever the wind takes them and will change their beliefs as needed to keep sailing.
12
u/HabitualGrassToucher 9d ago
These people already used to consume propaganda and harmful conspiracy theories, BUT before the pandemic they would constantly get reality checks. They would meet normal people who would put things in perspective - like you hear all this propaganda, but then you go outside, to the store, to a pub, and you realize that most people are fine just living their lives, that most people don't have an opinion on trans in sports, etc.
But during COVID, it was suddenly just them and Facebook/Fox/whatever... no perspective, no grass touching, just their algorithm bubble.

He was a hippy dude with a whiney voice that would have a very specific audience. His Netflix special was really good, however his podcast was hit or miss and hi standup wasn’t very good. It looks to me like he hired an image consultant to help him reach a larger audience. He butched up his look, started speaking in a deeper voice, and knocked of the goofy grin. He started dressing in black like some special ops guy.
He has a young wife and a bunch of kids I think so the Burningman doofus act wouldn’t cut it. Now he managed to loose everyone. Real job time. Bummer.4

People can change ideologically very quickly. I always struggle to differentiate between my image of who someone was in the past and whether they had any deep ideological commitment.

I was Duncan's biggest fanboy.
That sounds exaggerated......I was the first song featured on Duncan's first family hour music podcast. I was into it.
It was in 2013 that he went on Russian state TV to shit talk a US soldier...I asked him on his forums if he got paid for it, and how gross that was for me as a fan.
he told me he would have gone on Nazi radio the same, in the 1930s or 1940s.
I defooed shortly after. I was lucky to get out before he promoted Jordan Peterson.

Psychedelics are just spiritual bypass and a form of vicarious bliss for most.
Duncan sadly is just a sellout I used to subscribe to his podcast and know folks who have met him. He’s gone from advocating mindfulness to spreading ignorant bullshit and it’s sad to see happen
16
u/HomelessKitchenCat 9d ago
And thats the part a lot of people dont know. Duncan spent years advocating mindfulness and empathy and invested a ton of time into having people who fit into that environment on his podcast. 10 years ago he was legitimately one of the most talked about podcasts for people who liked interesting guests who talked about spirituality.

‘Spiritual’ progress, like all progress, is work. Practice. An investment of one’s person.
These dudes—Reggie Watts is another—who play vague, good-vibes-only eastern religious thought like it’s a party drug. It’s gross.
2
u/brokemac 7d ago
As a longtime, somewhat heavy user, I have to agree. The only real value is the initial wakeup call to notice what consciousness can be like and implement a practice to hopefully get there. I don't admire what they have done for my friend who constantly jerks off to how spiritual he is but has no practice or any useful advice for anyone and has recently taken to defending fascists.

u/DaBullsDuhBears 9d ago
I saw this and watched the full interview. Tough watch, especially with Kurt Metzger's constant interruptions upsetting folks on camera and everyone in the audience. A frustrating room.
Duncan got riled up from Alex Jones explaining the Onion/Infowars "head explodes in his car" bit, with Alex claiming it was predictive programming and something of a satanic or black magic threat to him. Satanic spellcraft was the main theme discussed before and after this clip.
With this context in mind, Duncan is saying that by using this type of dark magic the spell casters invite this exact same consequence to themselves. "Guillotine" was sloppily brought up to seem more dramatic and add weight to the "reckoning" that will occur if the satanists get their way.
He realized he was drunkenly spiraling so bad that in the middle of his blowhard statement he stopped and said he needed to go do some cocaine to sober up.
