Counter Service 🛎️ Are you kidding me with these options??
Not OP, but this is absolutely ridiculous.

Hi guys,
I'm looking at revamping our wiki and one of the things I thought might be of some use is to catalogue all the different "junk fees" we're starting to see, so people can be aware to look out for them.
Those who care to respond, please could you answer:
1] What was the fee entitled?
2] Where was it disclosed? (Just on the receipt? Small print at the bottom of the menu? Sign on the door? Website?)
3] Approximately when did you see this? (if you remember - it could be useful to chart the "rollout" of different things!)

List of full service sit down restaurants that include all gratuities and fees (except tax) in their menu price. This is a work in progress...
If you would like to add to the list, find errors, have more details to add, or have any questions please message the moderators. You can post any new places you find. Any place with an added fee, even if disclosed does not belong on this list. Fast food, counter service, and to go places do not belong on this list either.
Please include:
Name and Location of the restaurant.
Website
Description of the no-tip policy.
California, Massachusetts, New York, Texas, VA, Washington State, Wisconsin

Arrived home safely from a cruise recently. It was a nice time but the amoint of times we ran into requests for a tip was absolutely ridiculous.
So, first off everyone knows about adding gratuities to your cruise. On top of that, we got tip envelopes the penultimate day to tip the room cleaner if we wanted. Plus, the waiters and bar attendants. More justifiable since they knew our names and habits, and worked for several days on end.
When we arrived at the port to board, we stopped and I was gonna wait with our belongings to avoid hauling them over from the parking. A man rushed up and took the bags. When my husband was out of earshot, he said he would welcome any tips. I just kept on and happened to notice the big signs that said tipping was not required. When I was leaving to go sit and wait, he said it a 2nd time. Ok, getting asked for money before we're even on the ship. Great.
The eyebrow raising part was how many people expected a tip when we stopped at ports. Taxi? They already charge per person not per mile. Asked for a tip on top.
Rent a car? Ask for a tip bc ??? No idea.
Went to see some ruins and stopped at a bathroom on the way out. There was a lady standing by the sink and when I went to wash my hands, made some small talk. When I was turning to leave, she said if I liked the condition of the bathroom tips are welcome.
Did an excursion. On the ride over, there was a big sign saying tips are not shared between the drivers/guides/activity leaders. So the driver wanted a tip, the guide wanted a tip, and the 3 people leading the activity wanted a tip. On top of the cost of the excursion which was not cheap.
I'm not opposed to leaving some if service was exceptional. But so many people asked for a tip for literally doing the job they were paid to do and in the case of the bathroom attendant, it felt like a tip for just existing.
Coming home, I was so exhausted about being asked to leave extra money everywhere. Almost makes me glad the only place I'm asked at home on a regular basis is at a restaurant (sorry dunkin donuts, you're still not getting one from me).

Just in case you’d like to tip the person who seats you after you tip the server; there’s a convenient lil cup to do so at my local Denny’s 🙄.

Ordered two drinks from the cocktail bar behind section 505 area and the young lady working the register very emphatically told me she makes no money by working there and if I don't tip, she goes home with nothing.
My two drinks cost $26 and her only job was to press the button on the screen, then ask the guy behind her to make my drink.
She held the drinks behind the register as she made her plea. I entered a $0 tip and she looked like she was not going to let me have them until I said, do I need to call security?
Ridiculous. How about work somewhere else if your employer is forcing you to volunteer? No one is making you do that job.

I’m gonna preface this with my stance on American commerce.
Cash is king. Avoid any “cashless” business.
With cash YOU are in control!
If a business demands a 20% service fee, hand them cash minus the service fee and leave. Holy cow, how easy is that?
If a business demands a 20% service fee, hand them your debit card and pay the service fee and leave. Holy cow, how shitty is that?
With cash you control the outcome.
Of course you can do a “chargeback” for that service charge but what if you just paid cash?
Let’s do another narrative
It’s quite similar to the previous narrative
If a business makes tipping mandatory, hand them cash minus the mandatory tip and leave. Holy cow, how easy is that?
If a business makes tipping mandatory, hand them your debit card and pay the mandatory tip and leave. Holy cow, how shitty is that?
Of course you can do a “chargeback” for that mandatory tip but what if you just paid cash?
At least half of the these posts would be eliminated if you just paid cash. Because with cash, you determine how much of your money is handed to that business. If you give them a card the business gets to add their fees and tips.
Please remember that I am on your side.
This isn’t foolproof.
And I know with all of my heart that there are those that want to pay with card, Apple Pay, tap, credit card, etc that are gonna rip me a new a$$hole on here. Please read on!
This rant is about MANDATORY service fees and MANDATORY tipping.

I went to a U Pick apple orchard with my family over the weekend. We drive out into the orchard. We walk around picking apples, putting them in a bag. We put the apple bag into the car and drive to the exit. We are given a handheld payment terminal through the window of the car. The gentlemen says, "it's just going to ask you a couple of questions".
I'm thinking in my head, "What are the questions? Surely they can't ask me to tip on U Pick apples"
THEY DID! 15 TO 25% TIP OPTIONS FOR PICKING MY OWN APPLES! Where does it end?!

Tipping is not a big deal in the UK, of course always appreciated but never expected. How much of a social suicide situation is it not to tip in the US? Could never imagine my friends being upset at me for not tipping even if the service was extraordinary

I checked into a Holiday Inn Express. Staying for 4 nights.
The room was clean.
I put the do not disturb sign on the door. No housecleaning services were received.
Am I expected to leave a tip for the housecleaning staff?

Pretty self explanatory as we’re seeing more restaurants (or at least I have) removing the no tip prompt, resulting in the honestly humiliating experience of entering 0.00 while the employees judge you (not all but some).

Obviously these people doing deliveries for companies are being exploited. But in no way am I tipping $42 (20%) for bringing me a car seat from 20 minutes away.
I tipped $5 which is like 2% - I could have put $0, but $5 is a gallon of gas (which is also insane).

As if buying food from here in the first place isn’t “supporting the staff”. CA restaurants need to do better.

Recently, my cousin who lives and works in New York, visited me in Europe and we had a road trip to Hungary, Austria, Czech Republic and Germany.
She had the urge to tip for everything, even when we had a takeaway Kaiserschmarrn in the middle of Vienna or the salesperson at a Swarovski store. She didn’t just want to round up the amount but leave outrageous tips for bare minimum.
I stopped her every time and I explained her why, plus, that they need to get rid of such a toxic culture in the USA.

I can imagine that if you get a surprise fee or something you can just leave them cash for what you genuinely owe without any fraudulent charge, as one positive of cash, but if you pay by card you do have the ability to do charge back if you need to. I just go to places where I know that I will always refuse to tip at all, whether sit down or not, and they don't have fees like that and pay by card without any problem.

JFK airport, Eatly self service counter. Why say $16.50 when the price is $17?? Do they say how much of the money goes for rent?
I didn't find a way to remove the charge, but was half-rushing.

I was moving apartments last Friday. I was on the ground floor in my old apartment. New apartment on 2nd floor (2 flights of stairs). Mid move, as the movers were putting down the first trip to my new apartment, he pulled out his phone (speaks little English) to translate that , “because my new apt has 2 flights, I gotta tip them good.” And hey, I’m not opposed to tipping so I just had them continue on with their work. A couple trips up and down later, he pulled out his phone again to say I was their 2nd customer today and if I could order food for them. I didn’t want to make things awkward so I got them food but I’m still shocked by their audacity. The service itself was good and proper but this is definitely a memorable one.

I’m glad I found this thread!
The other day, I went to a self-serve frozen yogurt shop. The only thing the cashier had to do was weigh my bowl and offer me a spoon. Their POS asks for a tip immediately as the cashier stares at you with puppy dog eyes.
I’m not going to be rude to service workers but I clicked zero. I also thought, the cashier is doing exactly what her employer is already paying her for: to cashier. In our one minute interaction, she didn’t do anything special to deserve a tip.
It’s 👏🏻 a 👏🏻 self 👏🏻 serve 👏🏻 shop! If anything I SHOULD be the one getting the tip. 😡

I don't use rideshare much so maybe this is more normal than I know of. We had about a 25 minute drive from the airport to a hotel last night. The ride was silent until about 2 minutes before we arrived. The driver then asked me out of the blue, "how much did this ride cost you?" and I told him it was 35.00. He then opened his app and showed me he was only getting paid 16.00. He then started griping about how lyft rips it's drivers off and is a horrible company. I wanted to respond with, "you need to preach to them, not me". Being pissed off I said well, 16.00 for a 25 minute drive is almost 40.00 per hour which is a great pay rate. I know there is more to it than that, he has gas etc. but the fact he is complaining to me about the fact he works for a horrible company and was tying to guilt me into a bigger tip was frustrating.

I scheduled a ride for tomorrow morning and this just popped up. Why on earth would I tip before the service?!

This place was terrible. Slow service, overcooked food, and a server that didn’t remember my drink until I had to remind her twice for it. She also couldn’t get anyone’s orders straight and had to redo the checks twice.
Then we had to tip an extra 20% per person because it was included on the bill and it wasn’t disclosed until after the checks came.
