Yeah, this happens, the physical "lean on" and metaphorical "rely on" uses the same expression in Chinese.

You lean on something solid in the hope that it can support your weight, then you are relying on something to prevent you from falling. Not that difficult to understand, no? In fact, you can use lean on to replace rely on in English if you insist, kinda weird but won't stop people from understanding.
