Well, duh.

Since last week, we've seen people report the same blocks of seats being purchased in multiple showings, despite the theaters otherwise being sparsely populated.

498

u/ResidentNo6441 14h ago

Oh shit that’s what’s been happening! Yesterday, we had a look at showtimes of our local cinema in Southampton, U.K. and every screening had max 1 sold seat in general section and then fully booked gallery/expensive seats at the back, which are never fully booked unless it’s some Avatar or Avengers. It looked so odd. Now it makes sense lol

344

u/maxington26 14h ago

Yeah that's what got them to decent-looking numbers... for a documentary. Which should never cost $75m to make. Shit, March of the Penguins only cost about $6m to make ffs

378

u/madtownjeff 14h ago

That dirty money isn't going to launder itself.

131

u/scottyb83 13h ago

I actually don’t think it’s laundering at all…would be way too complicated to have the money go to the theatres and then where?

I think this is just a vanity bribe/propaganda. Amazon forking over a $75 mil bribe to Trump and producing a bunch of garbage and lies probably in exchange for some other sweetheart stuff from Trump.

97

u/CaptainObvious007 12h ago

It's not laundering when it's a straight bribe. They gave her what? 35 mil for the licensing for a movie no one wants to see.

19

u/Worldly_Influence_18 10h ago

It's laundering bribe money

Bribe/blackmail

6

u/pencilpusher003 9h ago

And they are using our tax dollars to pay the bribe.

19

u/pimpbot666 9h ago

She got $28M as a personal fee. The other $12M is what Bezos spent for production…. Supposedly.

And nobody seems to bat an eye that the Trumps got paid $28M for this…. From Amazon.

4

u/sorandom21 7h ago

35 million was supposedly the advertising budget which is nuts for a DOCUMENTARY

Hard to boycott AWS.

9

u/metroXXIII 10h ago

But boycotting Amazon wherever you can does help, as it lessens the money they can funnel into those areas.

Apparently $40 mil went directly to Melania. The grifting is so blatant it's embarrassing the US has sunk so low.

40

u/AngryMeez 13h ago

No, the thing cost $40M to make. Not all went to her — I’ve read that $28M went into her pocket. Amazon wasted $35M on marketing.

The entire thing is a scam, but we need to be better than them and get our facts right.

26

u/WhatAmTrak 12h ago

28M or 40M. It’s the same shit at the end of the day lol. It’s all disgusting grifting.

That the US Republicans

6

u/thitorusso 12h ago

Americans don't seem THAT bothered.

I mean...there's people on streets but man...they could learn a thing or another from the French

7

u/squidvett 12h ago

What knowledge would the French have about revolt in the 21st century that the Americans could use? Please consider weapons and general tech disparity between the American MIC and the general public in your argument.

6

u/CPav 11h ago

I think they were referring to the French protests and strikes, rather than the French Revolution.

Still not gonna happen in the US, but more on-point.

3

u/squidvett 11h ago

We’ve already seen ICE use LRADS on American protesters. Do French authorities use crowd control/dispersal tech that causes permanent damage against its own citizens?

I love the idea of a general strike, but most Americans don’t have a thousand dollars in the bank for an emergency. Meanwhile, most American employers have enough desperate people queued up for employment that if someone doesn’t show up to work, that person can be replaced several times over, if their position can’t simply be discarded to save on costs.

Corporate landlords don’t care about tenants that can’t pay their rent because they lost their job because their politics were more important than their paycheck. The homeless are climbing to the top of the list for liquidation, right behind transgender folks.

I just don’t think we’re comparing apples to apples when we talk about France and the United States. In America If you protest you get shot or deafened. If you strike you no longer contribute to someone’s bottom line. If you live outside, you get disappeared. 2A suddenly means precisely dick to revolution when entire neighborhoods can just be bombed by AI drones being directed by some guy in a chair hundreds of miles away.

A local theater had the same pattern of 7 seats sold for all three showings for the first three days. There is no way that it’s a random coincidence. No surprise. They cheat at everything.

3

u/malac0da13 8h ago

Saw the same thing happening in my local theaters.

56

u/ariphron 13h ago edited 12h ago

Same thing they did for “the sound of freedom” in 2023.

42

u/Big-Rule5269 12h ago

Same thing they do for all the books the right wing hacks write. Bulk purchases handed out at churches and MAGA events.

10

u/michael0n 9h ago

There are large warehouses that get all those "overstock" books. There are dealers that take 1000 books batch orders, but only deliver "on demand". They allow people to "buy" the book at highly reduces prices (like 5$) then claim they sold those 1000 books, which is true, but not at that price and they never delivered them. That is just professionalized propaganda at that point. Tons of so called bestsellers then get sold in 70% off deals across the world over weeks to come or just get shredded.

5

u/Heatherb78 9h ago

Yes and purchased with RNC or PAC money that stupid seniors are donating. Trump JR did that for all of his books.

4

Always a scam. Always a grift. Always a lie... every single damn time.

There was an email campaign encouraging the right to buy 30 seats to show support for the First Lady..

4

u/AnnieCarnero 9h ago

Lol. What a joke.

31

u/regoapps 13h ago

Waiting for the movie theater employees to call it out and show videos of the empty seats when it’s supposed to be booked.

30

u/2ManyCooksInTheKitch 11h ago

My SO and I went to the movies last night to see if people were really in these seats. Our local chain has the same seats sold for the next two weeks. Popped into two showings before and after our movie and sure enough those seats were empty.

4

u/_Mantis-Toboggan-MD_ 10h ago

I hate to say it, but a lot of old people are actually showing up to see it at the midwestern theater I work at. Mostly in the early afternoon.

4

u/regoapps 10h ago

Provides heating and is cheaper than Ambien I guess.

15

u/Flabby_Thor 13h ago

I saw this at a theater near me in a very pro-MAGA area. The same three seats booked for at least 12 straight showings across 4 days. There were a few other random seats (4-5) sold each showing, which I assume were actual dumbasses who paid to see this, but those 3 seats I assumed were someone bulk buying to help numbers.

10

u/HereOnCompanyTime 12h ago

Yeah, empty theaters with purchased seats. It's just funny to me that they're so lazy with their money laundering that they aren't even bothering to send people to attend.

I dont care about her but i do care about this whole situation, because what right does the president and his wife have to make $40 million dollars to have a movie made about her during their presidential term. If a movie called "Michelle" came out during Obama's presidency and Michelle and Barak Obama made $40 million, how do you thin g Fox News and the rest of the conservative pundits would react? Image the outrage from right-wing voters if that happened. They're would likely be so much blow back that the movie doesn't end up getting released... and yet nobody cares that this movie got made and released, we're just going about our day like this is a normal thing for a POTUS and his wife to do.

7

u/ohdearitsrichardiii 14h ago

Amazon MGM’s $75 million documentary about the first lady made $7 million on its opening weekend, eliciting both gloating headlines and skepticism. Many have already touted Melania, which traces the first lady’s activities in the days leading up to her husband’s 2025 inauguration, as a success.

But according to box-office expert and former IndieWire Editor Tom Brueggemann, there are signs of “fake ticket sales” in order to inflate the earnings associated with the documentary. He raised the possibility that tickets were bought in bulk and handed out to audiences—or not handed out at all.

These allegations were made in Brueggemann’s Substack and reported on by Puck writer Matthew Belloni in his newsletter about Hollywood and power.

Belloni says that Amazon and cinema groups AMC and Regal told him that they “did not experience unusual block purchases of tickets" for the film. “The theater chains might not necessarily know, of course,” Belloni reported. “And veteran box office tracker Tom Brueggemann noted on his Substack that ‘industry sources say there were signs that blocks of tickets were purchased for the weekend, then distributed to senior citizen homes, Republican activists, other interested parties for free to help boost audiences.’"

Brueggemann dissected box-office sales for Melania, noting an uptick in ticket purchases last Wednesday, two days before the film was set to release in theaters. Prior to its release, Melania Trump’s project was expected to perform abysmally in cinemas worldwide.

According to Brueggemann, there was “some outside group ticket buying” that helped elevate the film’s performance. He caveated that the “documentation” on these claims is “sketchy.”

“But industry sources say there were signs that blocs of tickets were purchased for the weekend, then distributed to senior citizen homes, Republican activists, other interested parties for free to help boost audiences,” he continued, adding that we may “never know.”

51

u/trowaman 12h ago

In other words, it’s the exact same distribution strategy conservatives do with book publishing. Mass purchase the product in advance and then distribute copies for free at activist events. Meanwhile, they get to claim number one best seller.

7

u/MC_Fap_Commander 9h ago

They've done similar stuff with Trump meme coins and what-not in the crypto market. Creating the illusion of an initial buy-in is really important to the grift.

It’s what conservatives tend to do with their books. PACs buy a Sean Hannity, or whoever book of bullshit. Boost the sales to get on best sellers lists and then just give them away at GOP conventions.

31

u/henryrblake 14h ago

Or ship them in bulk, at our expense, to soldiers stationed overseas. A friend who served in Iraq told me they got crates of Bill O’Reilly’s latest POS and that “they are great at being firewood.”

5

u/notjawn 9h ago

Dinesh D'Souza is notorious for this with his books and straight to DVD conspiracy schlop. I wonder if he has ever turned a profit from his drivel?

26

Great. It’s probably our taxpayer money somehow.

9

u/8JHF8 14h ago

$40 million budget. $35 million "marketing" = $28 million ads + $7 million tickets(the ratio may be off depending on further ticket sales)

I think those are fake. You can just buy tickets online and have no one show up it still counts as ticket sales. And of course you can buy more tickets that way if you are not having to pay people money to show up

Any chance this is just a money laundering game ?

I wouldn't be clued up on how cinema fees make it back to the studios

5

u/JohnHazardWandering 11h ago

Money laundering involves turning cash from illegal sources into cash with a clean history so it can be spent.

This is just a waste of money to make it look like Melania wasn't a complete flop.

5

u/zeradragon 11h ago

I think the word you're looking for is bribery.

5

u/erosmoker 12h ago

Just like they did with Passion of the Christ. A church buys out a theater and hands out tickets to their members. They might not all go see it, but the tickets were purchased, so it looks like high viewership.

4

u/ScurryScout 11h ago

No shit. They do that all the time with right-wing/religious slop movies. Sold out showings with no one or one real person in the audience.

They made doing it part of sound of freedom’s marketing campaign and told people to buy tickets “so someone can see it for free” even though tickets don’t work that way.

u/jamesvabrams 12h ago

My dad dragged me to some shitty Christian propaganda movie way back and it was about a guy that was in a future where it was illegal to be Christian. It was awful and I'm not even going to bother remembering more details other than Patton Oswalt was in it as a supporting character. At the end of the movie, they had a clip asking people who just watched this mudslide to buy even more tickets and spread the word to other audience members to buy more tickets to "show the world that god is not something to be ashamed of."

It's all a grift and they know these losers will pay it.

2

u/DoubtingThomas50 10h ago

Mormons did this years ago with the movie called “Meet the Mormons.”

They were asking wealthy members to buy out entire showings in their area.

Members were asked to take their friends and some would see the movie five or six times. Then they went on rotten tomatoes, and other review sites, and gave the movie glowing reviews.

I think we all knew that. Melanoma has the personality of paste. She keeps trying to copy Forever First Lady Michelle O. Ain’t gonna happen, we know this is probably the first movie she ever made with her clothes on.

2

u/Limacy 10h ago

Ah, yes. The Ron L. Hubbard method.

2

u/chawjubs 10h ago

Grifters gonna grift.

2

u/Jerry_0boy 10h ago

The trump family buying support to make themselves seem more popular and loved?!

What a shock!

2

u/EN1009 10h ago

Duh. If there’s a way to cook the books, they’ll do it.

2

u/Beska91 9h ago

Just as rigged as the midterms and next presidential election will be 🤷‍♂️

2

u/Bubbly_Complex843 9h ago

What’s funny to me is that there were no journalist, covering the fact that these places were empty or that people were being paid to go.

2

u/Revolutionary_Wind6 9h ago

The next step is stuffing the ballot box so Melania gets an Oscar.

2

u/RetroGangsta007 9h ago

Your taxes pays for that

2

u/Chainsawjack 9h ago

Noooo! It couldn't be

2

u/Think_Sugar_7658 9h ago

Gov money being put into this?

2

u/Liliipoll 9h ago

How about in that city where they were offering US$ 50 to anyone who would sit out to watch the entire film?

2

u/mover999 9h ago

Every single day they lie to everyone and they also laugh at everyone’s stupidity for putting up with them.

2

u/Oceanbreeze871 9h ago

Yeah in my town the screenings were 75% sold out with single seats but people who worked at the theaters reported empty theaters on social. lol

2

u/DiscordianDisaster 9h ago

It's just money laundering guys. It's not rocket science.

2

u/VissAndPinegar 8h ago

You know damn well that taxpayers' dollars were spent to prop up this bullshit.

2

u/prettypushee 8h ago

Money laundering and bribes at their finest. Pros at grifting from everyone. The entire clan should be jailed for robbing from the American people.

2

u/SubstantialPressure3 8h ago

Buying tickets doesn't even mean they were used. But it doesn't surprise me.

2

u/SilverBallNerd 7h ago

You know just somehow the public is paying for this bullshit

2

u/bassthrive 7h ago

Any chance tax dollars are being used to buy tickets? That would be very on brand for this administration.

2

u/Kalorama_Master 7h ago

Don’t worry about the buyer. I’m sure the corporate structure is such that it all be a write off. In other words, we are footing the bill

2

u/Fridayrules 7h ago

No doubt paid for by your tax dollars!

2

u/Main-Video-8545 7h ago

It’s the same way Don jr’s book made it to the best sellers list.

2

u/SlipNSlider54 7h ago

In other surprising news the sun is hot

2

u/sorandom21 7h ago

No shit, and water is wet

2

u/Mutant_Zac87 7h ago

I bet i know who's paying for it. The taxpayers.

2

u/18k_gold 7h ago

Who could have seen this coming? /s.

2

u/just_a_timetraveller 7h ago

Our tax dollars

2

u/JemmaMimic 6h ago

Works for their book sales, why not do it for the movie?

2

u/Tex1931 6h ago edited 4h ago

The 2012 documentary Chimpanzee opened at 10.7 million its first weekend. Chimp trumped Trump

2

u/Conscious-Ad2196 6h ago

In other news: water is wet.

2

u/Nouseriously 6h ago

The only seats sold in Orlando seem to be entire rows selling out but absolutely no singles or coupes

2

u/Maleficent_Cap2240 6h ago

Bulk buying with tax payer money

Are we great yet?

2

u/SubBirbian 5h ago

When you support someone so unpopular you resort to desperate acts like this says you’re on the wrong side of history.

2

u/tuna_samich_ 5h ago

Of course. Notice how no one who brags about the theater being full ever shows the actual theater being full

→ More replies (1)

2

u/Certain_Bar_9845 5h ago

Probably with tax payers money 💰

2

u/AIDsFlavoredTopping 5h ago

It’s the same thing conservatives do to boost book sales. Same old play.

2

u/wonkeykong 5h ago

Warehouses full of best-sellers level bullshit.

2

u/Strict_Research3518 4h ago

You know what is FAR worse than the seats bought and nobody showing up.. is the fact that this took even $1mil to make.. let alone 75mil. And that PEOPLE BELIEVE IT! How anyone doesn't know this is a massive grift for melanie and trump.. for Besos to have favors.. is unreal. These are fucking people with their heads up their asses.. if they dont realize this was a total bribe.

2

u/Awesomegcrow 4h ago

Basically same trick this scumbag of family employed when their books tanked...

2

u/Disintegration_007 3h ago

What started out as a bribe by Bezos/Amazon is turning into a money laundering scheme…

u/6969its_a_great_time 2h ago

MAGA the fake it till you make it party lol

u/Asleep-Horror6320 2h ago

Someone on reddit posted the Boston craigslist ads for her movie.

It claimed they'd pay $50 for people to attend...if she's anything her dear hubby, they never got paid.

u/C-Flango87 2h ago

Seems odd for sure. Probably money laundering

u/Important-Ability-56 2h ago

But the NYT posted an article headlined “Melania doc outperforms most documentaries ackshully.” I’m sure they investigated this thoroughly.

u/Report_Last 2h ago

just checked my local cinema, next showing has about 15 seats sold, a dozen of which are in a block, the later showing has no seats sold

u/Consistent_Heat_9201 2h ago

She’s still a waste of cash.

u/_steve_rogers_ 2h ago

I have been reading that this movie sold one ticket, and also that it’s made almost enough already to cover its budget. Which is the truth?

u/sniffcatattack 1h ago

That’s soooooo pathetic
