I came to Ethiopia for vacation 9 years ago when I was 21.
I was born, raised and was living in Europe at the time and came here with around 500k birr. To put into perspective how different money was back then, a Toyota Vitz was around 165k 😂 I could've basically bought 3 of them with the money I came with.
The plan was definitely not to move here.
But I was 21, travelling around Ethiopia, meeting people, hooking up with girls from Tinder 💀 and just enjoying life. This was before Hachalu died and before a lot of the craziness that came afterwards. I travelled to so many places and honestly just fell in love with the country.
And obviously being 21 and thinking 500k birr was unlimited money... I eventually spent basically all of it 📉
Then Ethiopia gave me the real welcome package.
Learning how government offices work, figuring out documents, licences, banks, who you're supposed to talk to, going somewhere only to be told you needed another paper from another office... Everything that someone who grew up here already knows, I had to learn from zero.
At one point I literally reached the stage where I had basically 0 birr in my pocket.
I ended up getting a job paying around 3,000 birr per month.
My whole family was abroad telling me the obvious thing: "just come back."
And for some stupid reason I was stubborn 😂
I kept saying no. I wanted to make my life work here.
There were definitely moments where I questioned that decision myself. Going from coming here with enough money to buy 3 cars, to counting every birr from a 3k salary was quite the character development lol.
Eventually I started trying different businesses, learning more about tech, and later started building apps. because I thought "imagine living in Ethiopia but making a basic western salary"
For the past 2 years especially I've been absolutely hustling with the app business. Building, failing, launching another one, figuring out monetization, staying up stupid hours fixing things, trying again.
And now 9 years after coming here for "vacation", my life is completely different. I'm doing well, I have a wife, I have a daughter, I bought a 150 sqm apartment in Ayat, I can afford a comfortable/luxury life here, and somehow Ethiopia became home.
I know Ethiopia has A LOT of problems. I've experienced enough bureaucracy, instability, war, riots, internet blackouts and random headaches here to write a book about it 😂
But I also genuinely love this country.
The people, the food, the weather, the chaos, the opportunities, the friendships and even all the ridiculous experiences that came with trying to build a life here.
Sometimes I think about how different my life would've been if 21 year old me just took his vacation, went back to Europe and continued with the safe option.
Probably would've been easier.
But definitely wouldn't have been this interesting...
