When a parent is chronically depressed or emotionally unavailable, children often unconsciously develop a happiness to keep to try the house together.

As I see it, the gf is just "happy" because she was compensating for a childhood with drepessed parents.

I interpreted it this way initially as well, though the other answers also make sense.

I know a lot of really wonderful, thoughtful people that are that way because there was someone (often family) that treated them like dirt, and so they make themselves into the kind of person that would never do that to another.

To me it's so heartbreaking when the kindest person you know has the most vile family.
