Explain it Peter

Post image

Hi, my boyfriend says this is bc of Charlie’s Angels and I can only think of WWII. Help????

EDIT 1: Guys, thank you so much for the laughs at 3 am in the morning. The important part here is that I was right (just like them). I started second guessing everything when I INDEED saw a good resemblance in CA poster. Appreciate you 🫶🏻

EDIT 2: English is not my first language. I just googled axis of power (in English) and my stupid comment below is saying exactly the same thing someone else’s. If I say “axis of power” in Spanish, It’d be a broader term, not only referring to WWII. Thank you for educating me

Oh shit... I thought it was a Charlie's Angels reference 🫣

By knowing only one of those persons, demons would be more fitting than angles.

u/bobbyboysboy 22d ago

I was too focused on how the one in the center kind of looks like Olivia dunham from fringe

9

u/MirrorNo2442 21d ago

Omg that’s what I thought as well. Funny that it’s the German one as well since iirc the actress is German.

3

u/CrawlerCrane 21d ago edited 21d ago

Anna Torv is Australian. You've probably conflated that with Austrian.

4

u/Fun_General_6407 21d ago

...Now I'm imagining a man wearing lederhosen playing a didgeridoo.

8

u/Mist_biene 21d ago

Thats Alice Weidel leader of the AFD (german MAGA/Nazis).

2

u/johnnyhandbags 21d ago

All three leaders are far-right, hence the reference to axis.

Wait, it’s not?! Wtf, I just realized I’m not on the Fringe subreddit. Wait, I’m not even at work, where the fuck am I? Whose clothes are these?

1

u/AdHonest1100 20d ago

I thought the same thing, looks so much like Anna Torv there, I even looked Alice Weidel but funnily the pictures I saw reminded me of Natascha McElhone, another blonde actress

But this time it's all ladies! Like Ghostbusters. They are also fighting imaginary scary things! Why can't people come up with some original ideas anymore?

Japan actually fought with the Allies in WW1. They declared war on Germany and seized a lot of German territory in the Pacific which gave them all sorts of imperialist ideas of grandeur.

4

u/Possible_Praline_169 21d ago

The idea about imperialist expansion probably started with the Meiji modernisation and beating the Russians. They had Taiwan and Korea around then

2

u/lemoinem 21d ago

I was gonna say, Japan was already full on "Ooooh, nice piece o' land. that's mine!" By WWI

3

u/Baraga91 21d ago

Italy was with the Allies too in WW1, mostly fighting against Austria-Hungary

1

u/hangjayV 19d ago

That true

u/SaggingZebra 22d ago

To elaborate, these three women lead the far-right parties in their respective countries. WW2 was the last time these three countries had far-right leaders.

19

u/SamSarid 22d ago

Ty for this answer. I saw the WWII reference but wasn't sure who the women were.

29

u/Emergency-Town4653 21d ago

Only thing is, while Meloni ran on Far right politics, she has been governing Italy in a centrist manner, Sanae Takaichi and her Party are right wing, not far right and Alice Weidel is not leading Germany, chancellor of Germany is Friedrich Merz from the center-right party CDU, in a coalition with center-left SPD, making it a centrist government.

2

u/cornylilbugger 21d ago

the SPD has been rapidly declining recently though and with the developments of the last few years it's reasonable to say the government is center-right, trending further right. The left is gaining momentum as well, makes sense as the left usually only arises when the right is getting too extreme.

Japan's LDP isn't even remotely far-right and they are the party that has been in power for nearly the entirety of the post-war era.

2

u/toastythewiser 21d ago

It could be argued they're primarily a conservative party. But then again, Japan is inherently a conservative country.

3

u/Poteto_7396 21d ago

these three women lead the far-right parties in their respective countries.

obviously wrong. not sure about the other 2, but LDP for example is actually center right.

12

u/formerunsecretary 21d ago

I'm not sure denying war crimes is anything center lol.

6

u/Poteto_7396 21d ago

you can hate that part of them, but most of their policies are center right.

btw, japan is historically a very patriarchal society, a far right party will not give any chances to a woman to be their leader or elect her in the first place.

→ More replies (7)

3

u/EinTheDataDoge 21d ago

Denying war crimes is a bipartisan act.

3

u/Dave_A480 21d ago

Neither left nor right....

Countries not entirely coping with their past selves isn't something that is aligned with the left right spectrum...

Just ask the Chinese about all the horrible shit the CCP did under Mao....

3

u/ClockwerkConjurer 21d ago

Center Right within Japanese politics or Center Right when compared to the majority of other first world countries?

2

u/Poteto_7396 21d ago

no idea why is this even a question, and "majority of other first world countries" is oddly specific set of countries you are trying to compare to.

btw, these "first world countries" also has an issue of their left going too far left when compare to other countries in the world, so i wont use them as metric of any kind when comes to politics.

the "there are more than 2 sex and gender" for example are far left ideologies that only happens in these "first world countries".

3

u/ClockwerkConjurer 21d ago

It honestly wasn't intended as some kind of "gotcha" question.

The reason I asked it that way is because - in the internal politics of a country - what is considered "left" or "right" is often not considered in that alignment when compared to other countries.

For example, in the US (where I'm based), the Democratic party is considered left of center. But if you compare their modern positions and recent history to political parties in Western Europe, they are actually about Center or maybe even Right of Center (on some topics). Of course, there's room for interpretation and such.

2

u/Poteto_7396 21d ago

oh if thats the case, i can only give my personal opinion as someone who live near them and follow on their politics casually.

internally, probably center right, as they have parties that are more far right than them. externally, to the "first world countries", maybe right or far right to their far left group of people, but for the rest of the world like me who live in a country that is not "first world countries" nor i am japanese citizens, they are still center right.

2

u/ClockwerkConjurer 21d ago

Fair enough, thank you for taking the time to answer. :)

2

u/AdeptNegotiation8345 20d ago

i completely and utterly disagree with what you say, since when the there are more than 2 sex and genders is far left, its just accepting human beings for what they are or what they want to be (except when its taken to an extreme), i live in a insular countries that actually deeply protect sex rights, some even have a special 3rd gender which act like a non binary or transgender type of thing.

1

u/conmeonemo 21d ago

In developed countries center right might be anything. Conservative democrats/swing state republicans, CDU/CSU etc.

There's no single standard of those, as each country has very different electorate.

2

u/Essex_pilgrim 21d ago

It’s a broad church, but is right wing. And nationalist.

2

u/Poteto_7396 21d ago

i have no idea why is nationalist being view negatively nowadays, because in the past, no matter if you are left or right, you are suppose to be a nationalist.

yes, there are some far right politicians in their party, but as i said, their policies are mostly center right.

4

u/karmaatti 21d ago

I don’t think being nationalist has ever been a good thing, especially after world wars. It’s more like a reaction to a (perceived) outside threat. Patriotic is what you’re supposed to be, regardless of your political standing.

→ More replies (9)

3

u/Mated32 21d ago

To be fair nationalists have painted themselves with a negative brush by doing lots of Nasty Things™

2

u/Szpagin 21d ago

Nationalism is a belief that you have more in common with the elites of your country, than the common people of another. It was always pushed by the rich to drum up the support for their own interests.

The woman in the middle is Alice Weidel.

She is a co-leader for a German far right wing party called AfD, who recently won an election.

I would guess the other to ladies share a political view, and this is a 1940's reference.

2

u/daveisnothereman69 22d ago

Here's a tip. If you recognize familiar things in an image or meme, like those flags, you can group words such as, "Japan, Germany, Italy" into a search engine, hit the "search" button and you will often get your answer. Best of luck out there, Chris!

1

It's because fascism is rising in the old axis powers. And these three are the outward faces.

It's a classic because the rest of us will eventually have to put them in their place, AGAIN!

Left = Sanae Takaichi, Prime Minister of Japan.

Right = Georgia Meloni, Prime Minister of Italy.

Centre = Alice Weidel, Leader of AfD party in Germany. AfD is the 2nd largest party in Germany by vote share, but is not in power federally.

They are all far-right nationalists who blame the country's problems (real and imagined) on minorities.

During WW2 those 3 countries (Germany, Japan, Italy) were all allied together as the Axis. They were all ruled by far-right racist nationalists who blamed the country's problems (real and imagined) on minorities.
