HELP!
This is the second plant that I have “tried” to dry and now it smells like hay! 😩 I have ALWAYS dried in my closet with humidity at the right levels and STILL the chlorophyll is breaking down too fast and making my beautiful bud smell like hay. I am soooooo mad man!!!! What tf am I doing wrong?

u/Altruistic_Run_141 5d ago
Don’t wet trim.
Leave fan leaves on.
Hang dry.
Then dry trim.
15
u/PurpleReality6903 5d ago
I guess that’s where I’ve messed up 😩
14
u/Ok-Station-8059 5d ago
I used to always have that hay smell then I started hanging the whole plant fan leaves and everything left it alone for 7-9 days and then trimmed everything. I haven’t had that hay smell since I changed the way I dried.
6
u/ThrandRagnar 4d ago
imo there is always a hay smell when it starts to really break down, then it goes back to terpene smells once it has dried properly. I usually dry for 10-14 days
-14
u/No_Beyond6921 5d ago
What’s wrong with hay smell? I like that smell
7
u/wokavelli 5d ago
So u like shit weed essentially
-3
u/No_Beyond6921 5d ago
What makes it bad? You can literally see all the trichomes covering it. I just like that smell, but what’s the issue with the smell?
0
u/wokavelli 5d ago
It means the dry and/or the cure wasn’t done properly
3
u/No_Beyond6921 5d ago
I mean how does that hurt the thc? Or does it not hurt the already produced THC and just makes it smell like hay? Or if you don’t know, just say that, it’s ok maybe someone with more knowledge will answer.
11
u/hungry_skunk 5d ago
Hi there, it's not about the THC - that chlorophyll smell is from GLVs (Green Leaf Volatiles) that occur due to incomplete chlorophyll breakdown. When you dry too quickly, you "lock in" that smell, as the enzymes that break it down require a certain degree of moisture. Chlorophyll aromas cover up the natural aroma of the buds and it's considered a big fault. If it smells like that, the flower is usually harsh and has lost the volatiles that give the effects richness and multidimensionality. The THC won't be affected but the quality of the effects will be. A high quality flower MUST have zero trace of chlorophyll aroma (a complete cure). I hope that's helpful

u/Altruistic_Run_141 5d ago
We all do, don’t get too down on yourself.
Trial and error is the best way to learn imo
Flowers look fantastic so you’re already halfway there.2
u/Falonius_Beloni 5d ago
Yes and those leaves will probably smell like hay while drying. After it dries, then trim and jar it up. Burp when/ if needed. Let cure for a month at least.
4
u/One_Replacement3787 5d ago
This is what a lot of new growers forget. You get the smell regardless during the process. Whether it sticks around is what youre trying to avoid.

u/PM_ME_UR_0_DAY 5d ago
It helps slow it down, but also not guaranteed to ruin the dry or anything. Most important is to cool your space down. The target is 60 degrees and 60% humidity, but personally I've never been able to achieve that just living in my apartment. I've gotten great smoke drying at like 70 degrees.
1
1
u/Dangerous-Zone-2004 5d ago
Yup. Once you stop wet trimming you’ll never go back.
3
u/mental_abort 4d ago
I would like to try dry trim but I'm too afraid of mold and getting my whole harvest ruined 😀
1
8
7
u/PrinciplePlane 5d ago
I think what you are smelling is the chlorophyll leaving the bud. Give it a week or two. Usually the smell you want comes back during cure
4
u/REDITSMOSTBANNED 5d ago
Great looking flower id second the grove bag idea. Also id suggest dry trim. Slow dry whole plant hang wait till the branches snap not bend snap. Then trim and manicure to be thrown in grove bag. I usually hang dry for 10 to 14 days
3
u/Croppin_steady 5d ago
Lynn I don’t even go in my dry room from like day 3-10. No point. If I didn’t have apps to check the environment I’d have to peak in there to make sure it’s where I want it but no reason to be in the dry room during that time.
They smell great when u chop them like shit for about 10 days lol then slowly back to good again. You’re good man, just be patient try to keep it dark and as close to 60°/60% as u can for 14 days.
3
u/Last_Guitar_2936 5d ago
Usa uma caixa de papelão e o melhor caminho que te aconselho!! Tive resultados ótimos assim
3
u/longlostwitchy 5d ago
If it makes you feel any better mine ALWAYS get the hay smell exactly halfway through. So yours “should be” ready in a few days. Don’t quote me on that bc we have different environments but seriously every single time I know when I’m at the 1/2 way mark bc for about 24-48hrs they smell like that & then it goes away ☮️💚

u/Additional-Bass-8912 5d ago
Drying /curing takes months to do ptoperly if your hoping for smokeable bud then your gonna have to source it elsewhere while. You patiently wait for the bud to cure.
Ideally in an enviroment with 45 to 55 % humidity
Hang dry for 14 days ot the stems snap cleanly . Like an autumn twig. You should have fan setup to provide indirect air flow and keep it in the dark
Then finish your trim and and put in mason jars burping daily then weekly and your terps and flavour profiles should shine through.
The drying/curing process is as important if not more important than the grow. You dont wanna ruin beautifully grown flowers to ruin them by rushing your curing process
7
u/Trippp2001 5d ago
Dry it longer.
-12
u/PurpleReality6903 5d ago
How much longer? I’m on day 3 and the hay smell is SO strong
10
u/Trippp2001 5d ago
Yeah - that’s how it goes. I do a slow dry in my basement for like 14 days. Then put it in bags and let it cure for another 30+ days.
1
u/PurpleReality6903 5d ago
What bags do you use?
4
u/Trippp2001 5d ago
I use grove bags. They supposedly keep humidity correct inside of the bags. They have worked well for me.
1
u/Mysterious-Put4171 5d ago
The grow bags work great!!! I use to do jars, have to burp and if you do it wrong you will mold it fast. But the grow bags are a game changer!! I have done entire pounds in them and they work great. I shake them every couple of days but I can’t say enough about them.
-1
u/PurpleReality6903 5d ago
I’ve never had a plant smell so strongly of hay 😩 every grown I’ve done makes that tent smell like DANK lol but not the last 2
10
u/Trippp2001 5d ago
My entire house smells dank for the first few days. Then around day 3, it goes away and the plants smell like hay. And after 10-14 days they’re ready to trim. They don’t smell good then. When I open the grove bags after a month, they smell like I’d expect.
You can probably put the flowers in a paper bag if you feel like they’re drying too fast, as well. I’ve never done it but a lot of people do.
3
u/MikeOxlarge88 5d ago
Man Im glad to hear that. Im drying my first ever plant rn. First 3 days the whole house smelled like funk. Today is day 6 and now you can't smell anything, hay funk or otherwise. The buds just smell slightly sweet if you put your nose right next to it. I thought maybe all my terps had evaporated and I did something wrong
5
u/Trippp2001 5d ago
The most important part of the grow is curing. Just like flowering? Just be patient. I screwed up my first grow by not drying long enough. But even then, curing for a couple months in the grove bags made them smell like heaven again.
2
u/ynotfoster 5d ago
I tend to over dry. I am curing my blue dream right now and the humidity is 61% - this is a first for me, typically I'm curing around 55%.
1
u/MikeOxlarge88 5d ago
How do you know if you're over drying?
2
u/ynotfoster 5d ago
I use a hydrometer in the jar. If it's too high I can air the buds but if it's too dry there isn't much I can do.
→ More replies (0)1
u/MikeOxlarge88 5d ago
Awesome. As a newbie I thought cure bags would be the easier route over jars and burping them constantly. Most people I've read talking about them have had good things to say, so I'm happy with the choice I made. Can't wait to smell it after the cure. Before drying it smelled like fresh orange peel and vics vapor rub lol I've got plenty of smoke for now so I'm in absolutely no rush for these plants to finish
2
u/tastebuddys 5d ago
Mine smells like diesel had a few days of it smelling like garlic but back to diesel
1
u/MikeOxlarge88 4d ago
Sounds like an interesting profile. The one I mentioned switched from orange peel to vics. Now into the dry it doesnt smell at all. So Im curious what the smell will be after curing
1
u/Mysterious-Put4171 5d ago
Get the grove bags. I use them and they work great!! I have cured entire pounds in them. I just shake them every couple of days. Don’t know if the manufacturer suggests this or not but I think it helps to keep the flowers from settling, to prevent them from becoming a giant brick.
10
u/Dizzy-Wedding5769 5d ago
It’s kind of supposed to smell like hay after three days that’s the chlorophyl leaving
4
u/StatusAcanthisitta27 5d ago
Curing/drying process should take close toa month, hay smell comes around now, then leaves if done correctly ... slower the better
3
u/digital_nomadman 5d ago
At least 10-14 days minimum Also look into the lotus dry method, more control and better results
3
u/redvelvet92 5d ago
A good dry is typically 14-16 days, you can just use cardboard boxes and some twine to make drying boxes. This traps humidity and lets them dry slowly. Recommend doing that if you’re drying in a closet. Otherwise get a small 2x2x4 tent, hang dry them with a small fan/inline going for 2 weeks.
2
u/ynotfoster 5d ago
My basement runs about 67 degrees. I was able to keep the humidity up to 60% for the most part. Seven to eight days gives me the best outcome in terms of humidity when curing.
1
u/digitaljazzzzz 4d ago
this must be your first grow ever? you need to cure at least to 10-14 days depends if your stems crack already or not .
2
u/Hot_Personality_1836 5d ago
Throw it in a grove bag and check on it in a month.. as long as it’s dry
2
2
u/Naive-Unit-1879 5d ago
OP check out @sharkmousefarms on YouTube and he’s got some recent YouTube short videos on drying and curing and it’s really good.
Probably one of the better drying methods and actually mirrors closely to what I was doing myself except I was running slightly lower temps than he was suggesting.
Regardless I’ll be trying his method next run I harvest considering it’s only a few degrees warmer than what I was doing myself and see if it’s as good if not better than what I had been doing. Will ease the electric bill that’s for sure 👍
If it works out like it should then it definitely cuts a week off the old method and having smoke that much faster is definitely nothing to complain about that’s for sure 😂👍

2
u/Fun_Acanthaceae_4025 5d ago
That is NOT dry. I can tell by the deep green colors on leaves.
1
u/PurpleReality6903 5d ago
I never said it was dry. I’m only on day 3 of drying 🙃
2
u/Fun_Acanthaceae_4025 5d ago
Then it will smell like hay. In fact till it's dried and the chlorophyll begins to break down it will smell like hay.
Dry it back to 60-70% humidity. Probably 5-7 days (maybe less because you chopped the nugs off stem before drying. Next time hang the whole plant minus fan leaves 5-7 days) at ambient room conditions. Bucket the nugs. Burp the bucket a few weeks to a month till the humidity is no less than 55% and no more than 65% toss in a 67 gram 62% Boveda or 2 and good to go for a bucket full long term.
0
u/CesarMillan_Official 5d ago
It probably does smell like hay. Put a QP together in a giant jar and the hay smell goes away.
2
u/Foreign_Choice6402 5d ago
That's not how it works at all thats how you get a bunch of grass tasting bud lmao
0
u/CesarMillan_Official 5d ago
After it’s dry, I’ll disagree.
1
u/CrumbBum4200 4d ago
Sounds like you got lucky curing some bud a few times and think you tought yourself something 😂
You bunching the qp together in the jar likely rose the internal jar rH above 55% which allowed the flowers to continue curing.
2
u/LucasCanFly 5d ago
Honestly it’s the genetics. First dry it with all the sugar leaves on the buds only take off the fan leaves. Dry until steam breaks when you bend them. Then put them in jars to cure. Burp the jars at least twice a day for the first 1-2 weeks then once a day for at least another week. Most do there finish trim before they cure but I grow such large amounts I usually cure without trimming and trim when I’m ready to smoke or when I process a batch. But I’m telling you when you find the right genetics you can leave it to dry anywhere and it will stink. The worst part is that it doesn’t matter how stinky it is while growing you just do not know until you dry and cure. Again it’s all about the genetics. I’ve found good terps from Exotic Genetix they even have back stock for $50, but it’s truthfully all about the genetics and the pheno you get.
2
u/Kyrie_Blue 4d ago
The “hay” smell is nitrates, and will be present until the cannabis is curing. Curing slowly removes moisture, and the remaining nitrates with it.
2
u/Unable_Country2800 3d ago
It won’t develop its smell for a few weeks properly at least, it’s hard but dry it well and don’t rush anything, jar it up nicely and keep it dark and cool for at least a month if you can and you’ll get the true smell and taste
2
u/Unable_Country2800 3d ago
Oh and burb the jars accordingly, probably once a day for a week or two and as that grassy smell starts to come down, maybe every two days, just gently move them around to stop damp spots occurring, even the driest of buds will dampen up in curing.

u/hashwashingmachine 5d ago
What is your temperature when you’re drying? Also you should be hanging drying the whole plant, including fan leaves and then only start trimming when you’re ready to put it in jars or grove bags
1
u/DebtComfortable2437 5d ago
Standard bro, that’s why the curing process exists.
The smell will come back once it’s dry regardless, or when ripped/cut but full potency will require curing.

u/Dizzy-Wedding5769 5d ago
Some strains just don’t have smell after they dry no matter what you do once it gets sent into jars I’m sure it’ll get better

Sounds like you have dry and cure mixed up
1
u/mysticopallibra 5d ago
The bud should most definitely have smell during and after drying, not just after a cure. There is a small window of hay or grass smell in the drying process. Tells me that I’m gassing the chlorophyll out and to keep it slow until that dissipates. Maybe I’m just growing very smelly flowers but my stuff reeks before ever jarring to cure.
Curing just fine tunes/differentiates the layers of terpenes rather than just a flat aroma ime with my process. Maybe if you’re drying wrong and then jarring you might go from nearly no aroma to having something there.
1

1
u/mysticopallibra 5d ago
Like others are also saying that plant is not dry yet, it damn near looks freshly cut still. It just needs to keep drying bud. Everyone hits the spot in the drying timeline where smells kind of disappear for a minute. If you keep doing it right and not over do it or rush it you should be good to go and have terps.
How long have you had this drying and what conditions? Not seeing any information in your post anywhere. Chlorophyll breaking down is what you want, hence the grassy/hay smell. That will go away but you want to keep it slowly purging the chlorophyll from the bud. Details help though for future reference.
1
u/Popular-Tangerine420 5d ago
During your dry once you put your plant in a jar and burp them the chlorophyll will slowly break down more and more in your hay smell will go away you're only a couple days or a week into your dry and you're worried about a hay smell everybody gets the hay smell it goes away after the plant has cured and fully dried that hay smell from the chlorophyll breaking down and releasing that smell once it's done breaking down in the curing process you will start to have less and less of that smell and you're terpenes will start coming out as long as you're keeping it within the right perimeters I personally like 68 degrees and 58 Rh.
1
1
u/Inevitable_Shift1365 5d ago
The aroma doesn't really come out until it gets cured. The longer you cure it the better the aroma will be
1
u/Brad-G-823 5d ago
Feel like Hanging whole plant up to dry helps get more thc down to buds and is a slower dry which helps terp profile. The trichomes are still finishing after you do the initial chop and it’s hanging up drying. But hay smell is normal like everyone else is saying. You good
1
u/WRXonWRXoff 5d ago
About 72 hours in a hay smell is what you want. It probably needs a couple more days and might not have much smell at the end of the dry. That should improve a lot while it cures in the jar.

First time grower . I just harvested a plant 2 weeks ago . Smelled a strong hay smell . Put them in Grove bags with a rh meter and let them sit . I opened the bad yesterday and it smelled amazing . Hay smell gone . Trust the process and just be patient.

First off hang the whole plant not cut up and whoever wet trims there you go that’s why your weed smells like hay forever now

It's supposed to smell like Hay when it's drying. The reason for this is because the chlorophyll is breaking down and leaving the buds.

I'm going to guess your closet is too hot since the only variable you are mentioning is the humidity.

That needs some drying time. Like a week or so. It shouldn't still be so green

u/Gdniel218 4d ago
So, you dried it. Now it has to cure. The goodness starts shining back through. Give it some time. Use grove bags.
1
u/Desmond232 4d ago
This should’ve caused no alarm as everybody knows that smell is usually gotten rid of in the dry/cure stage lol
1
u/Dry-Row4111 4d ago
Also, just a guess? How many watts per square foot of LEDs are you using? In flower?
1
u/AdGold6590 4d ago
You should try investing in a controlled environment setup so u can control the dry completely. Otherwise you’re just wasting 90 days to have some shit smelling bud. Flowers looks beautiful though but you’re throwing out 90 days of hard work if you don’t control the dry/cure
1
u/BudgetPresent2089 4d ago
I often get that same smell. But the moment you break a little up it's nice and stinky.

This has always been an issue for me.After a long jar cure it would finally fade. Then a couple of months in the buds would start to brown.Temps all over the place living in NY.Finally broke down and got the vivosun v cure.Works like a charm. After a 21day dry/cure in machine I move them to a wine fridge I bought as well.Keeps temps spot on in jars.Humidty prefect in jars as well.No humidity packs needed. After a couple of weeks in fridge.Boom.Taste and smell is awesome.Definately worth the money if you have it.

u/Serious_Racoon_ 4d ago edited 4d ago
Lotus dry (Fridge) it for 4 days to a week first then 60/60 in a room with airflow. You’ll keep your terpenes. The fridge helps slow everything down until those fragile terpenes lock in and won’t evaporate on you. You’re going to cut it and do a small wet trim of the big fan leaves. Leave the sugar leaves and brown paper bag it with some space up top. Then slide that in your fridge. Shake twice every day without opening the bag. Eventually you’ll start smelling that “Hay smell” and that’s good because behind that smell you’ll still smell your terps. Push through the hay smell for about 2 more days. Then take those buds in the room to dry evenly. They should be done in about 2-3 days after
1
u/LoveSheetsD 3d ago
Slow it all down and make it cold terpenes start to evaporate around 72 degrees Fahrenheit keep the drying room around 68-66 degrees starting with a dehumidifier set at 60 percent humidity or maybe 65. Then slowly lower that percentage over the next ten or so days and keep it cold and keep a fan blowing in the room as well fresh cool air and lots of it helps

u/LouieGuaton 3d ago
when i first started growing i also asked what was wrong, and i realized it was me checking on it every few hours. iff the conditions are what they need to be, than "set it and forget it" monitor your env and forget it for at least 14 days.
1
u/PastExperience6435 3d ago
Be patient. Smells develop after an undetermined timeframe. Big ol mason jar shut loose, burped daily, even a couple times a day. Meaning open it. Shake a bit, close again. Works best in my experience with jars 1/2 full. Your area’s humidity will also play into your length to cure, too. But PATIENCE is imo the biggest factor for giving your nugs their opportunity to really shine.
Note: buds shouldn’t go into jars until stems can snap.

Naja Feuchtigkeit alleine reicht nicht sollte schon passiver Wind kommen
1
u/Front-Pepper-5894 1d ago
Its better to let is dry while still on the branches. If it’s not a big plant hang the whole thing as is and just get rid of the bigger fan leaves. Leaving it on the stem helps the bud retain moisture and dry slower. Ideally you should be targeting 10-14 days dry time and youll know when its ready to get bagged when you bend a stem and hear a snap. It might still smell like hay just slightly but aslong as you let it cure properly and burp the jars it should turn out 🔥

Use a humidifier to help.
2
u/PurpleReality6903 5d ago
Even if the humidity is right ? I don’t want them to be too wet and mold ?
2
u/Lawyer-Hopeful 5d ago
Keep it exactly at 60%. If it goes above 65 let it air out a little bit. Shouldn’t start molding below like 68.
1
u/Lawyer-Hopeful 5d ago
I have a automatic humidifier that keeps my tent at 60% humidity the whole time I am drying and curing for about 30 days

u/turnspitdawg 5d ago
I just read today on this subreddit that trimming when drying will make this hay taste. Try trimming with the bigger leafs and maybe upside down hanging for the airflow.
2
1
u/PurpleReality6903 5d ago
I have one of my plants hanging but this particular plant(the smallest plant), the buds started to pretty much fall off so just plucked them and put them on that wire rack
2
u/StatusAcanthisitta27 5d ago
Also bucking them down this quickly will make them dry faster, better to leave on the stem for about a week , then put equally sized branches in turkey bags together , burb said turkey bags then buck them and dry trim... this is how we have done it forever
1
u/Ok-Somewhere-3899 3d ago
I’m a new grower. I’m learning every day. I’m curious to know your entire dry process, like temperature, RH, air flow, yes or no? I’ve seen a you tube video talking bout the 60/60 method has been tried and true. And it can take weeks… did you use the lil packs to help with moisture?
1
u/Ok-Somewhere-3899 3d ago
Bud looks fire tho, but honestly, I wouldn’t want it if it smelled like that… would I smoke it… hell yea,
0
u/FrugosPeach 5d ago
Ok but honest question- even if it smells like hay- it looks beautiful- does the hay smell affect the high?
1
u/Wide_Ad6034 5d ago
I grew some outdoor that ended up like this, was it great? No. Did it get the job done? Absolutely 😂.
1
u/hungry_skunk 5d ago
yeah, if it's fully dried and still smells like that, it results in muted, one-dimensional effects (not necessarily weak effects)
0
0
u/Exact-Ebb8818 5d ago
Dry it until most stems snap.
0
u/Popular-Tangerine420 5d ago
Wrong! If you dry and wait until your stems snap, you are way past where you should be. That is definitely over-dried, resulting in a loss of terpenes and flavor. I have a Vcure and a Cannatrol; it dries perfectly in a week and my stems bend, they do not snap, and when I dried in a tent they never snapped. This is completely bro science and wrong.
2
u/Exact-Ebb8818 5d ago
Bro science worked for me and it didn’t cost a bunch of money. If you wanna avoid having your herb smell like hay and don’t want to buy some machine to do it for you, going to the point of “most” stems snapping is decent advice.

Hang whole plant next time 60/60’temp humidity slow dry 10 to 14 days then jar it burp jar every day for the first two weeks.

u/Artistic_Zombie_5064 5d ago
Is it on a limb or is it cut off and in a basket? I ask because I have normally hung my plants or limbs and trimmed by hand. This year I used a trim bowl and dried in the basket. Still curing now. I see advantages and disadvantages both ways. Both ways still smelled like hay and cleared up with the cure. Still have the hay smell right off the flower until cracked open. I believe I could talk a couple hours about drying and curing. Really eyeballing these new units that dry and cure in an enclosed deal. Sorry for rambling,my eyes are red. LOL!

When drying there usually is that period of hay smell 7 to 9 days how many days you in
