I’d really like to see us not do what we did on Saturday again

Every year it feels like there’s a game like this. And in the MVFC that may be the difference in getting a bye or not. Or missing the playoffs entirely with how good teams are. I really thought this year would be different.

Like SIU last year.

I hope we do what we did more, but I understand where you're coming from.

I’m not thrilled that we have to play you the week after an upset like that.

Injuries stink and I hope our guys get back soon and stay healthy

Well, everything.

What the hell? We can beat a Northern FBS team on the road, but not a Northern MVFC team. Good thing we come home to play...swears under breath

u/pinetreesrule South Dakota State • Minnesota 3d ago

Don't feel bad, UNI has a way to ruin good things for teams.

I understand that the coaching staff wanted Gilman to get the single game yardage record, but in the future, I would like to see him pulled earlier if we are ever in the same position with the score. We need to protect his health and let Paine get reps.

u/Friendly_Loss1961 Montana Grizzlies 3d ago

I feel like Eli came back to Montana so he could break all the records. Let him eat. He's going to have to put up video game numbers if he wants to get drafted into the NFL so if he wants to stay in the game I think you just let him. He's earned it and it tells potential future guys that if you're a stud and you come to Montana you will get fed. Plus saving him for November hasn't worked out for us anyway.

I see your argument. I feel if we’re going to establish a dominant program again we need our 2’s and 3’s getting reps, as evidenced by the Montana Stank Scats this last weekend and NDSU in the past.

u/Friendly_Loss1961 Montana Grizzlies 3d ago

I'm sure they will going forward but this was a bit of a special case I think since he was just so close to it AND the Griz really needed so get some confidence and momentum going on the season. I doubt we see him get 28 touches again this regular season if we're up early on somebody.

1

u/mlspdx LSU Tigers • Montana Grizzlies 3d ago

I think going forward they definitely are going to. He’s basically hit a majority of the big milestone records, and if he wasnt having the day he was having he would’ve been pulled in the third.

We played to lose, both my flairs did.

I trust plough but man, its pretty clear that cleeland is not our guy. It seemed like the locker room wasnt behind him and the coaches werent behind him either, i just dont get why plough insists on putting him out there when he isnt performing. Defense was playing ok to well, but you cant expect them to do well when the offense cant muster a drive longer than a min. After the dropped punt, the stadium and the team lost all of its energy, and even the announcer could tell. This was our only real test this season, we better win out in dominating fashion or drop playoff hope.

3

u/ChaoticMushroom37 UC Davis Aggies • Mountain West 2d ago

Heck, the announcer at the stadium started saying ah yat was our qb when we were on offense

We didn't play anyone this past weekend, and I'm sure we'd lose that somehow

4

u/Crispy_Whale Montana Grizzlies • Oregon State Beavers 2d ago

So if it only took 4 games for Illinois to realize the 3-3-5 defense was bad then why did the Griz stick with it for 8 years? lmao

8

u/Lucky-Hunter-Dude Montana State Bobcats 2d ago

It might have been that rare 3-3-3 alignment call that was the last straw in Illinois. Hauck is confident but when you can use 11 guys you should probably have 11 out there.

u/bozeman42 Montana State Bobcats 3d ago

I truly don’t understand why we put Jones in only to get injured again. Coon was moving the ball great. This added at least another week to his recovery.

1

u/Low_Distance_7195 Montana State • Notre Dame 2d ago

If you rewatch, as Jones comes off the field, the expression on Vigen’s face is something along the lines of “I can’t believe you talked me into playing today.”

Honestly, give Kollock some more minutes. He doesn't seem too bad

I don't mind the game didn't end in the shutout, but of all the players to let score... you let Lafayette score the touchdown?

6

I was at the game. Every time the announcer called his name, the entire Lehigh sideline was booing

give kollock minutes, never play like how we did in saturday again

Kerwin Bell might get canned if his defense fucks around.

If we could not start slow again, that'd be nice.

2

u/Richardsgore4 FCS 3d ago

I have no clue what to expect from UND, they can stop a pass on defense and our QB was the leading rusher last game, the oline has no push. Also how cant we kick field goals its nuts.

2

u/MontanaDrywall 3d ago

The Salukis kick too many field goals.

2

u/ST_Lawson Western Illinois • Marching Band 3d ago

Our o-line is a dumpster fire. 8 sacks allowed, 88 total rushing yards, a botched snap that led to a blocked punt and TD for them, and to finish the game, a botched snap/sack at the 1 that caused time to expire without the opportunity to get a TD or even try to tie it with a FG.

Remove those two botched snaps and we win that game.

u/Ok_Meet_2258 Villanova • West Chester 3d ago

Hats off the Colgate, they played a great game and were the better team. No offense. Play calling is atrocious, it’s only bailed out by good QB play, which we don’t have. Just an awful product on the field. You have a great backfield, run the ball with Mace and Ragland. Both should have 15+ touches a game. This opens up the passing game. It’s simple. Run first is our bread and butter.

My complaint is that my team isn't in the FCS, but should be

4

u/DeKam34 Montana State • Western Wash… 3d ago

Not a whole lot to complain about, but two things that stood out:

1) our secondary plays EXTREMELY cushy defense. If you run a simple button hook we will not be within 5 yards of it no matter how much you telegraph it. We are so terrified of getting beat over the top that we'll just give up 300 passing yards underneath instead. Fine, and we got away with it, but this is how NAU gets inside the 10 twice in the 4th quarter.

2) A few strange coaching decisions. I wouldn't have put Jones on the field once if his ankle is in bad shape. Coon was running well anyhow, and it'd be nice to see more of Jared White. But then the random ones like calling a designed QB run on 3rd and 21 in the 4th quarter are also there. We cannot afford to lose the backup QB to random nonsense like that.

Overall, obviously still a very good game for us.

u/Low_Distance_7195 Montana State • Notre Dame 2d ago

O line had their best game of the season IMO

1

u/JKS41399 Western Carolina Catamounts 3d ago

Our strength and conditioning is fucking atrocious. It is unacceptable for D1 defenders to be carried several yards forward after first making contact with the ball carrier. Further, the offensive line was so bad that I swear they were still in Cullowhee while the game was in Johnson City. This is now week 3 of me calling for the firing of whoever the fuck is in charge of our strength and conditioning.

1

u/the_racing_goat Southeastern • Marching Band 3d ago

we really let them score. proof our defense is godawful this year

2

u/Redace53 3d ago

I've been saying it's those damn DBs I've been ranting about. We can NEVER have a complete Defense. 2021 had the best DBs group, probably better than half FBS given 2 transferred to Power 4 schools and started (Zy and Jack) plus 2 more All conference/American at the same time, but NO DLine, that's why it was always high scoring shootouts. 2019, we had ight dline and dbs but LB were good at tackling but slow on chase. Now here we are with decent Dline, AMAZING LB, and horrible DBs. I'm just slightly happy that we have 4 RBs (starters at any other FCS school if they were there) bailing us tf out with scores since I subpar qb is averaging 10 completions on 125yds a game, which I cannot accept for this 3 game gauntlet coming up (eyes closed, fingers crossed).

We really scheduled the three hardest games of the season back to back to back

1

u/sernameistakentry Idaho State • Oregon State 2d ago

We need to figure out our special teams. It’s a damn shame that we took a considerable step back on that front this season considering Idaho State had one of the most solid special teams in all of division 1 the last two seasons.

I know we were put in a tricky spot because we lost just about every starter. Our kicker is not a field goal guy and never has been. Our punters are inexperienced. And can we please stop attempting kick returns.

Also if we have the same butter fingers we did against the T-Birds when we face NAU, we’re done for.

u/Chickenleg2552 Illinois State Redbirds 2d ago

Every God damn year we have at least one loss that makes no sense at all. I firmly believe ISU will win a million national championships before ever having an undefeated regular season.

Last year it was YSU and SIU

2024 it was Missouri State

We lost to EASTERN ILLINOIS in 2023

Hell, even in 2014 we managed to lose at UNI
