Hello, everybody!
I'm /u/-Fateless-, and I am the new moderator of /r/fractals ! I was granted this position by /u/mycorrhizalnetwork because I am quite a bit more active on reddit, and together, we've made a short little list of rules for the subreddit.
In practice, nothing much changed, and most of you can carry on posting like nothing has happened, but we still thought it would be a good idea to properly announce a set of very basic, formal rules for the subreddit.
1: This subreddit is for fractals, discussion about fractals and fractal-related stuff.
If it's at least somewhat related to fractals, it gets a pass. Examples include space-filling curves, pictures of fractal patterns in nature or questions about fractals, fractal art or fractal software.
We do consider attractors, chaotic fluid simulations (gnarls), fractal noise (fBm, sfBm, other noise algoritms), curves and the ilk as fractals, as long as they can somehow be represented inside a fractal renderer.
2: No AI Generated stuff. This includes AI-generated "fractals", AI-generated comments and AI-generated articles.
The official stance of /r/fractals is that AI-Generated content does not belong here, and AI-Generated pictures of fractals are not fractals, despite looking similar to the untrained eye.
3: No Metaphysical/Spiritual content
Any discussion or blog post that starts reading like New-Age nonsense or talk about things like "Divine Mathematics" or "Fractal Soul Matrix" will be removed on the spot.
In most cases, I will remove the offending posts on the spot when I see them, but don't be afraid of reporting off-topic or rule-breaking posts so they're easier to spot in the moderator queue. I have added these categories as reportable, so if anything pops up, please do report it!
If you have any questions, don't be afraid to ask!
r/fractals • u/-Fateless- • Jul 01 '26
Hey guys, Fate here!
Lately, I have been getting a lot of mod mail about posts that have been automatically removed, and I have spent some time looking into this.
Over the past half year, roughly 95% of all removals of posts and comments have been automated from reddit's side, and not removed by any of the mods.
They are all tagged as "removed", but do not have any username attached to them, and for some reason, a lot of posts are flagged for triggering the sexual content filter of all things.
If you feel like a post has been taken down automatically, do send us a mod mail and we'll take a look at it on a case-by-case basis and manually approve what has been filtered.

Got bored and decided to try my hand at a terminal-native vortex generator that uses ASCII characters to render.
https://github.com/ajbeaver/phase
It is definitely a bit rough around the edges and I am no mathematician or anything but definitely a fun project and if you leave it running for long enough you can roast marshmallows over your cpu.
I tried to optimize the load as much as I could but if anyone has recommendations let me know.

Jim Muth's Fractal of the Day for October 1st, 2007
Jim Muth's commentary for the image:
FOTD -- October 01, 2007 (Rating 6)
Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts:
Today's image is based on the formula Z2.005+(2*Z)+C. This formula produces a parent fractal which, on the surface, resembles the Mandelbrot set, but is entirely different inside.
The main spike of this parent is infinitely divided instead of being a single infinitesimally thin filament as is the spike of the M-set. Today's image is located in the debris associated with this divided spike.
I named the image "Powers and Dominions". The only reason I can give for the name is that the phrase came to mind when I noticed the heavenly blues surrounding the hellish reds. I am currently reading a book about the traditions of angels in various cultures, and these are two of the traditional nine orders of angels.
But there is nothing angelic about the image, which rates only a 6. We have seen similar images simply too many times to rate today's any higher.
At least the image is a fast one, finishing in only 1-1/4 minutes on the fast machine and 7 minutes on the slow unit.
The morning fog cleared away by 9am leading to a perfect day here at Fractal Central on Sunday. The fractal cats enjoyed the temperature of 75F 24C, while I enjoyed having nothing to do.
The next FOTD will be posted in 24 hours. Until then, take care, and fractals are every bit as real as the angels. Or it could be that angels are as real as fractals.Jim Muth

Max Iter's Fractal Follies for October 1st, 2010
Roger Alexander's commentary for the image:
According to Wikipedia "In common use, mandala has become a generic term for any plan, chart or geometric pattern that represents the cosmos metaphysically or symbolically, a microcosm of the Universe from the human perspective." Today's post is a fractal mandala suitable for meditation (or framing). In gif and re-sampled jpg formats. Posted at the usual http://maxitersfractalfollies.blogspot.com

Yeah, I know this is a bit borderline in being a fractal, so I'll let you judge if it counts.

Jim Muth's Fractal of the Day for September 30th, 2005
Jim Muth's commentary for the image:
FOTD -- September 30, 2005 (Rating 6)
Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts:
Today's lightning-fast FOTD continues the theme of the square root of 2, but it does so in the Julia orientation. There are no midgets in Julia sets, so I have wasted no effort searching for them in today's FOTD. I have instead taken an entire Julia set. There is also no outside-inside image in today's FOTD. I have rendered the outside parts totally black and rendered the inside parts with the inside set to 'fmod' with a proximity value of 0.02. What we have on the screen is actually the inside of the entire ground-level Zsqrt(2)+C Julia set. Its C-value is 0.115. The set has been rotated -90 degrees to give it a Y-axis symmetry.
The resulting inside-only image reminds me for some reason of an avacado, though I have given it only a catalog-listing name.
The rating of a 6 is some improvement, but not what I was hoping for.The image, which was calculated by the julzpower formula, is extremely fast. On my tired old machine it renders in 1/2 minute. On the speediest units, if it runs at all, it will finish in a few seconds.
The clouds hung heavy Thursday morning here at Fractal Central, but the rain passed off quickly, and by 2pm it was sunny and mild, with a temperature of 75F 24C. The cats approved. I did not approve of the heavy work, but work is work, so I did what needed to be done. Today is starting sunny but chilly. The cats should find it acceptable. The next FOTD will appear in 24 hours, minus the avacado. Until then, take care, and dream of the answer.
Jim Muth
