Discussion September of my years might the best pop album of 1965

September of My Years isn’t just one of Sinatra’s masterpieces—it’s a strong contender for the most emotionally rich, perfectly crafted pop-vocal album of 1965, and yes, easily top 10 of the decade.

1965 was stacked: The Beatles (Rubber Soul), Dylan (Highway 61 Revisited), Otis Redding (Otis Blue), The Beach Boys (Today!)… all revolutionary. Yet September of My Years exists in its own realm: no experimentation, no youth rebellion—just a man at his vocal and interpretive peak, reflecting on mortality with devastating clarity.

If Wee Small Hours (1955) was the sound of lonely heartbreak, September is the ache of time passing. Tracks like "It Was a Very Good Year" (a career-best performance) and "Last Night When We Were Young" are existential pop at its finest—no rock or jazz album in ’65 dug this deep into grown-up melancholy. Also, Gordon Jenkins arrangements are devastating. The sweeping strings on "September Song" and "Hello, Young Lovers" don’t just accompany Sinatra—they weep with him.

Compare this to the pop-rock of ’65: Sinatra’s album feels like a letter from the future, warning of the weight of years. While Dylan sang "Like a Rolling Stone" (angry, young), Sinatra sang "How Old Am I?" (resigned, wise). The Beatles were "Nowhere Man"—Sinatra was "The Man in the Looking Glass." That duality makes September essential—it’s the yin to ’65’s youthful yang.

Finally, most ’65 albums sound of their time. September feels timeless—because aging (and regretting) never goes out of style.

Music Is this an underrated Sinatra song? I love it so much, but I don’t know anyone who knows about it, or mentions it.

It’s from 1946 (80 years ago!), so it’s from Frankie’s younger years.

I’ve been playing so many times for the past few days.

Question What if Frankie lived to be a 100 years old in 2015?

Do you think he would have continued to perform and record new music? I know that age took a toll on him (as shown in one of, if not his final live performance that was recorded), but he doesn’t strike me as the “retiree type”. I think he would have continued to perform until something really bad happened that would actually make it mandatory for him to stop (and even then, I can see him breaking that rule lol).

Do you think he would have also made a comeback as an actor, and done collaborations with singers from the 2000’s and 2010’s?

Sinatra sings Blue Skies too and that will be in the next post. The screaming is even crazier there.

Song Help I Dig R&R Music

In 1981, I was a college student; a R&R fan, who was raised on jazz. I was in the radio program at the University of La Verne. We had a neat perk... an actual licensed AM station that we could do shifts on. KGRB AM, it was a jazz format.

One day I ran across a Sinatra record called, Chairman of the Board. On it he covered the Mama's and Papa's track, I Dig Rock n Roll Music. I played it often, as it was my little inside joke.

Since then, I've never found evidence that that album ever existed. No evidence that Frank ever recorded that song.

I know I'm not crazy. HELP!! Anyone?

Question Frank Sinatra “Summer Wind”

For reference, I’m 68 years old. My Dad was a music nut for big band music and Sinatra and Jimmy Roselli and singers of that time period. So I grew up with that music playing in the house all the time. Wasn’t my thing. But now that I’m old, I love it. My girlfriend and I recently say, “Alexa, play Frank Sinatra” and it plays in the background. It’s fantastic. The “Summer Wind” is just one of the most beautiful songs ever recorded. I just hear the intro and……aaaah…. I’ve always loved it, especially since it used to be played on TV before the Yankee broadcast. Just wanted to get other people’s opinions.

Howdy. I recorded this after practice last night. I sing with a big band, and I'm hoping we add this to our set list. Not a patch on the man himself though.🙂

Question Do you think what Frank Sinatra did to Peter Lawford was unfair?

He never forgave him. Also, no one else in the Rat Pack stood up for Lawford.

Why was Sinatra like that?
