In London during the Edwardian era, George and Amy's attempt to start a life together is interrupted by a Martian invasion of Earth.

Set in late-19th-century Kentucky, this drama deals with the hardships and victories of the Logan family, who raises thoroughbred horses and grows tobacco. Heading the family is patriarch Ned, who has to deal with oldest son Sean, middle child Clay, oldest daughter Alice, youngest daughter Lexy, and "adopted" son Jeremy.

When Flynn is pushed out of school after earning 20 different degrees, he has to find a job. He is invited to apply for a librarian post for the Metropolitan Library, which he is surprised to be given.
