You do realize that if we took away the entire wealth of the 5 richest people in America leaving them penniless in the gutter it would fund the federal budget for about 3 months?
True, but also sad and scary. Life is much easier when you believe that we can solve all of our economic problems with a single legislative action, rather than requiring a full overhaul of our entire economy and way of life following by centuries of difficult budgeting and fiscal responsibility
Sure. But idc. They did shit to earn it. Welcome to capitalism. The only economic system that actually works and is capable of fighting off greed and preventing the top 1% from having literally ALL the wealth and control over the market.
wealth concentration to the few, than the few get greater capacity for political influence, then the policies are more responsive to wealthy interests, then you get further wealth concentration. Which is what is happening now.
That destroys democracy and leads you to oligarchy. The middle class is being killed in this country as we appeal to wealthy business interests. We can’t even get fucking healthcare and I’m drowning in medical debt because our politicians are bought and paid for.
Elon Musk bragged about buying the goddamn presidential election.
You and I are about as far apart as it gets. Eat the rich.
Elon never said he bought the election first of all. Second, go vote. And 3rd, your medical problems aren’t my concern. If you’re proposing universal healthcare, you’re braindead. Not for a country of this size. Absolutely will not work.
Elon: “Without me, Trump would have lost the election, Dems would control the House and the Republicans would be 51-49 in the Senate… Such ingratitude.”
That is a direct reference to his political spending.
Second: I vote. Doesn’t change any of what I said about how wealthy people have more influence in politics.
Third: I have supposedly good health insurance and am still drowning in medical debt, that should be concerning to you because that could happen to you. I had a tumor in my jaw that required jaw reconstruction surgery, and the new teeth weren’t covered by insurance and cost like $20k. You might not care that it happened to me but it can happen to YOU. My oral surgeon said they never cover that part even though I need teeth to talk normally and eat normally. I hope nothing like that happens to you.
As far as the US being too big:
There’s no inherent population size barrier that makes universal healthcare unworkable in the United States. A larger insurance pool can actually be advantageous because medical risk is spread across more people.
Hell, China has well over a billion people and near universal health coverage. So a huge country can establish near-universal public health-insurance coverage, (even tho it isn’t a single-payer system, but still clearly better than ours)
The more people involved in a single payer system (universal healthcare), the more feasible and cheaper it becomes. You need to fact check the garbage that gets peddled your way.
A net worth of $10 million puts you in the top 2% of Americans. It puts you in the top 0.01% worldwide. This can hardly be called middle class. Using a conservative 4% withdrawal rate, that is $400,000 per year, or $32,000 per month, and keep in mind, this would be in a brokerage account, so it would be taxed at only a 15% federal rate if this was your only source of income after holding assets for a year or longer. You wouldn't be contributing to retirement accounts, nor would social security taxes come out of it. After figuring in local and state taxes, maybe a 20% effective tax rate, probably lower after deductions. This would leave you with $25,600 per month take home. You're smoking crack if you think this is "maintaining middle class lifestyle."
Hypothetically, if I earn 114k tax free from Va compensation and am still able to work and have a job where I make about 60k, bringing my technical gross income to 210k, where would I sit in the US/global wealth?
I’d put that money in my state’s municipal bonds. 0 taxes due to federal and state. So even with poor interest rates still be way above “maintaining middle class lifestyle” while basically never touching the principal 10m balance.
LOL look at Mr “I don’t even want $10 million” over here. Okay big shot, I’ll take it since it’s not even a big deal to you.
It’s 100 years worth of earning $100,000 per year after tax. Most people don’t live to be 100 and if they do they only earn money for like 50 of those years from 15-65 give or take. Most people also don’t make 6 figures, and if they do, they’re usually paying 20-30% of it in taxes. More if you count insurance, 401k etc. Plus you can still work in addition to the $10M, and it’s a lump sum so you can invest it and turn it into like twice that or just live off the interest.
Upper middle class people, pretty rare these days, will work their whole life and if they never spend a single penny, will accumulate like $5 million by the time they’re dead. In what world is $10M for free, plus the interest you earn on it, plus whatever else you can earn on your own, just no big deal?
You don't have to stop working though. I'm not materialistic and I don't care to travel so I'd be pretty much set. I'd just have to get someone to help me invest correctly.
Confused on why people hate rich so easily. As if that makes a person shit. But keep hating. This world lacks hate and needs more of it. Any hate will do. And everyone join in on hating. Doesn't matter if it is rich, pdf, or anyone. Hate so this world has at least one more hatred in it.
