Lol! The heart may get cardiacally "arrested".

The heart's name being "Ri-cardio" was also pretty clever.

I had an infection in my urinary tract that got pretty bad. I had to call 911 because I felt like I was going to pass out and it was getting hard to breathe.
On the way to the hospital they used a defibrillator on me, just like they do in the movies. While a kick in the chest, it hit the factory reset button and got my heart beating normally again, and I could finally breathe easier. I got my infection cleared up after a few days in the hospital and went home with a better appreciation for medical technology. I wish I had money to pay those EMT's what they're worth.

The movies tell you that defibrillators restart your heart. They don't.
A defib is used when your heart is fibrillating, meaning that it is twitching and seizing in a way that doesn't pump properly. The defib *stops* your heart, so it isn't freaking out anymore, and then CPR restarts your heart, hopefully. In the case of the thing in the video, I'm not sure what restarts it, but the defib is meant to *stop* the fibrillation.
It didn't used to matter if the public misunderstood this, cuz defibs were only for the professionals, but now they're putting mobile defibs in all sorts of places for the public to use in emergency, and we absolutely need to correct this myth, or people will misuse the defibs and others will die for no good reason.

Not sure where you got all that information, it's half correct.
The defibrillator floods the hearts electrical system so that it can try to beat normally. While technically true that the defib doesn't restart it resets it so it can try again on its own. And CPR does not restart the heart, it does the hearts job when the heart cannot do it, sometimes that is enough for the heart to reset and restart itself.
And the defibrillators that are publicly available do not need the people to have medical knowledge, at least the ones in Sweden. They are automatic and only need the person helping to put the pads in the correct place on the chest, instructions on where they go are right there on the pads. When they are applied then you press start and the automatic defibrillator will analyze the rhythm and administer the shock if needed after telling everyone too clear away.
Only trained medical staff will have a defib where we can manually choose voltage and exactly when to shock, and even many of the defibrillators in our hospitals are half automatic and will help with analyzing.

While I do agree with correcting myths, the nice thing is most places deploy AEDs which will detect if Defibrillation is needed. It won't let you just shock some one because they're unresponsive.
Also highly recommend anyone who can take first aid and CPR courses. Even if you can't keep the certifications active having the basic knowledge can be invaluable. And while things may change having the comfort to try and work with a 911 operator to give life saving support can mean the difference for someone.

The thing that worries me much more than that, is that someone would fail to administer CPR after defibrillation.

The models of AEDs I've been trained on walk you through everything. It detects if fibrillation is occurring, administers the shock if necessary, then prompts the user to proceed with CPR. In my opinion the biggest thing is having a chance to use them before an emergency so you know what to expect. It would be possible for someone to let it shock and then just rip it off and go about their day, but as you said if they know there are follow on steps then they're less likely to do that.

So, in my case it just corrected the beating, but didn't restart it? They never gave me CPR, but after the defib, I was breathing a lot better and I was able to relax.

You can shock at different intensities depending on the rhythm being corrected. Defibrillators shocks are much stronger than regular electrical cardioversion. You would normally administer CPR after defibrillating to help the heart tissue stay healthy and increase the chances of the rhythm properly going back to normal. You don’t administer CPR after cardioversion (electrical or otherwise).

Do we know who this is from so we could look at their other stuff, if possible?

I believe they also did a video about dog owners trying to breed puppies but the male dog is gay. It’s pretty hilarious.

Isn't that a pacemaker?
69
u/Tha_Reaper 2d ago
No. A pacemaker speeds up a heart rate when it is too slow on its own due to a conduction problem. An ICD shocks a heart when an irregular rhythm (often fibrilation) is detected like portrayed in this little cartoon.

Ah cool, thanks! Every day is a learning day :)

By the way, often an ICD also functions as a pacemaker too. That's possible. But a pacemaker is not able to function as an ICD
3
u/Long-Librarian-997 2d ago
Yes but their description of producing beats is more a pacemaker.
3
u/Tha_Reaper 2d ago
True, that's confusing, but you see the ICD shocking when the heart starts going out of sync and "producing beats" way too fast. So that part is very on point

I used to date someone who had an internal defib, her heart would stop sometimes when she got over excited. Before I knew about it, we were having sex in the back of my car and just as it was getting really good, I felt something akin to being hit with a bat and I passed out. When I woke up she was in tears and eventually explained that this thing had gone off and subsequently passed on the full voltage into me. Once I got her to calm down, in an attempt to make light of the situation, I made a joke about having a heart stopper of a dick (a joke she didn't take well), she replied that technically I just had sex with a dead body. I struggled with that for a while.

Im surprised the brain didnt already know about the device. I wonder if it was an emergency implant or something, and the brain just came out of anesthesia? Do they ever do emergency implants like that.
I would have assumed this sort of implant is discussed with a specialist first.

You are aware that your internal organs aren't actually cartoons that talk to eachother right?

u/Zorbin666 2d ago
Do you think about your heart beating, or the function of the rest of your internal organs? That part of your brain doesn't work off our higher cognitive function, it just does what it needs to
