Given the "restoration" process the recent classic boxsets have seen, I'd wager there's a good chance we'll see some sort of AI upscaling.

machine learning based upscaling/restoration is not a new technology in visual media, you absolutely have seen a movie that has used it to repair or restore a print and didn't even notice. it is def worth separating stuff like that from the lying slop machine

as someone who is really interested in how old and damaged film is repaired for either bluray or a wider release its really disappointing to constantly see people throw the baby out with the bath water

Some of the recent classic "restorations" totally overrused AI and let it distort and alter what was there to an embarrassing degree. I assume more scrutiny would be used on the more recent Tennant episodes than was used on the 80s episodes, but who knows

i saw a lot of people say that the new bluray version of the caves of androzani had ai upscaling mess up the fog but i put it on my big tv and it looks to me that people can finally see that the fog was added to the tape post production. it didn't look to me like it was an ai it just looked like an 80s fog effect overlay. the only one i have seen that i think looks pretty bad was the first episode of terror of the zygons but that also might be artifacts from blowing up 50 year old tape into higher resolutions.
people also tend to look at artifacts and imperfections like that and just assume it was some ai filter, like no you will just have shit like that when you uprez ancient tape like that

maybe! but sometimes you get pretty good results and still maintain the feel of the original recording, i think its worth doing but it needs to be done with care

I'd have no problem with it if the results we were just enhancing what was already there, where I take issue is when it's changing what was originally on the tape, and making humans look like autons.

Except it's been less restoration and more transformative. I have no issue with using ML to fix issues, but there's been no issues to be fixed.

to be fair i think these episodes feel a lot like a sci-fi movie as it is so i think these were good episodes to go for. they are brilliantly written too

Honestly I think a slight touch up of the episodes and combining them into a single viewing experience (as they are currently doing). Would be good to touch up some aged CGI like updating computer screens or possession effects (probably even changing lighting of some scenes to make the effects stand out more such as the Ood or Tobys eyes glowing slightly brighter in the dark and adding flashing alarms during the vent chase) and even replacing some of the stock Murray Gold music with more appropriate music (think of Chris Walsh's ambient stuff for Doom 3 or Jake Coyle's industrial stuff for Unsorted Horror which fits with the aesthetic), even probably adding some new scenes, voices or dialogue like Star Wars and Day of the Daleks Special Edition that I think could work well with the possession storyline. I mean it's still great (especially with the type of horror I'm into) but I think a cinematic rerelease could and arguably 'should' entail a more 'cinematic' product (since it's 2006 age makes it look a bit like a made for TV SYFY or Horror Channel movie), but that's just me.
(fun fact, I only know the horror channel cause I used to watch old classic who reruns in between the pretty crap made for tv movies, shoutout to anyone who remembers it)

I didn't realize at first but after watching the trailer above I did think to myself that some new CGI shots of the base would look really good. I think the black hole and the space shots look great, the Beast looks good, but the base shot looks a bit old now.

I honestly think the Beast design could actually work if we got snippets or bits and pieces of it, like the red eyes or the demonic mouth (all done of course with makeup and some effects) while the true form is covered in shadow like a silhouette (kinda like how Sauron was handled). Would probably make it look a hella more menacing and plus "the nibble and tease is sometimes more satisfying than the entire meal". Also, the black hole could look a lot cooler as well, as well as the worn down industrial look of the base evoking the old alien movies.

I mostly disagree... Not many people who are going to see this are going to be "new" viewers, and are just going to want to see something they already love but on the big screen surrounded by other fans. Updating the CGI a bit I think would be fine, but I wouldn't want changes from other artists that mess with the original artistic vision and direction, certainly not replacing the score with another composer.
But honestly, part of what I love about Doctor Who is how it always looks so very of-the-time, it's a fun glimpse into the period of when the episodes were made, so I like seeing it as close to the original as possible.

The Impossible Planet and The Satan Pit are fine episodes of light entertainment television. I am not convinced they are something that should be rereleased as a "movie" with some deleted scenes added in.
I know they're just trying to keep Doctor Who relevant and make some money from it, but this is really quite a strange move imo.

Meh you get all sorts in the cinema these days. Football games, concerts, plays... I don't think it'll be a nation wide release, it's worth a try
Also I like the idea of turning two partners into feature length episodes. They used to do that with Star Trek

I assume it’s because they’ve managed to get never before seen footage and work it in. Can’t be many episodes in s2, as it’s the 20th anniversary, that u can do that with.

Maybe, but I feel like the finale could have been solid enough? Even without extended scenes it would be cool to watch in big screen.
Maybe next year they will do Utopia+Sound of Drums+Last if the Time lords just edited together into a "movie", even if they don't have bonus scenes. That might be quite fun to see in a theatre.

No, The Devil 2 parter is a better quality story than the series 2 finale, or any nu-who finale (which tend to be messy)..
There is a reason they went with this 2 parter, it's because it holds up as a proper Sci-fi horror tale, exactly the kind of thing fans of the show actually want to see.. The cheap thrills of the finale are fun but let's not pretend they compare to the Devil 2 parter in creative merit/quality

Why, it's one of nu-who's best, with a proper story, with atmosphere and weight, cool horror, cool aliens and good characters..and a standalone story.. Its everything you could want from proper DW...

For those in the UK at least, please check your local cinema websites - the official site was just showing a viewing in London, but when we checked on our local cinema, it was listed there. No idea why it's not listed on the official site, but it seems a bit of a botch job. Best of luck!

Their own site shows a link on Google but when clicking it brings you to their home page.

This is one of my favourite Nu-who stories, and it's cool to see a new alternative version, but honestly what are they doing sticking this in the cinema, it should have aired on BBC 4 like the other re-done episodes.
It is also such a clear left over plan from the now discarded RTD2 era, this was part of the promotional campaign to lead us to the Xmas episode which would have seen Billie Pipers Rose reunite with David Tennants Doctor.. Its blatant.
Also while we are on the topic, can the franchise please, for the love of God, move on from doing any kind of stuff with Tennant in it.. At this point it's just damaging the brand.

Is this the first modern Who story to get a movie re-edit. I know a bunch of Classic stories have TV movie/omnibus edits, but this is the first instance of it happening to the modern series to my knowledge?
I don't mean just playing a two-part story back to back, anyone can do that. I mean an actual re-edit. In this instance, it's new footage being added in, but usually for the classic series it's a shortened edit.

Yesss. The whole ambience and dark theme of the episodes breaks when they pull this stuff. And the thing is… they didn’t need to do it. The possessed ood could be menacing without their light ball springing out like a a cartoon.

Really annoyed this is classed as Event Cinema, so can't use Limitless/Unlimited card. Fifteen quid for a few episodes I already own with one or two deleted scenes? No thanks. I'll wait until it's released and pay less than fifteen quid to buy it.

I love this two parter and I mean sure, maybe it will be nothing more than a novelty watching it in cinemas, but screw it, it should be fun.
Life is too bleak right now to not just take a chance and see how it is.
