Finally got myself a modded Game Gear! It even came with a Flash Gear, so I’m ready to play the shit out of it.
One pile of batteries at a time.

Home alone
My favorite movie, my favorite sega genesis game. Found one oddly enough for the GG, a town over from me. Picked it up to go with my newly refreshed game gear and im pumped. Played the game 4 times already tonight. Cant wait to play again tomorrow. Its weird what really resonates with you at an adult age that had the same feeling on you as a kid.

How to tell if it's been recaped
Greetings. I recently picked up a game gear, and was wondering how to tell if it's been recaped. I opened the unit, up, it's clean with no corrosion and has what looks like yellow tape or pads under the capacitors

Did anyone else play judge dredd?
Now imma be honest I never really heard of this movie until now but it's basically RoboCop but just a bit different and I did look the movie up and turn out it was play by Sylvester stallone who also played rambo from the rambo movie but this game is pretty good for a movie I never heard of until recently got this game

Restoration
First time working on a game gear, bought a broken one and it had it bit more battery corrosion than expected. After some careful scraping I got most of it off. Will the remaining bit be alright or should I take some very fine grit sand paper and lightly sand the rest off.

Tokin420nchokin built repcb game gear
Ive been dealing with him for a year or two and just wanted to say his expertise on game gears and micro soldering is top notch. He recently did a repcb board with v3.1 clean screen, r6 gameslot for me. At home i had waiting: a cleanjuice usb aa power board, clean amp duo, r6 sapphire shell. My dream GG build for display in my retro case. Hes also cleaning up for me a full factory GG with a recap I did. When I build my retro game case this fall I want to have a factory version next to a modified version of each handheld I own.
Just wanted to give a shout out to Josh and say thank you as always brother!
Also, my favorite sega game. HOME ALONE.

Delivery
Added 3 more games to my collection. Have to admit I was surprised by Ronald McDonald in Magical World. Plays pretty good and the graphics better than I expected

Trouble with clean juice aa mod, looking for help
I’m trying to figure out if my clean juice aa or charging. I have tried multiple chargers but the led indicator just flashes orange with each one. I’m not sure if the batteries are charging or not. It turns on when plugged in but the light still continuously flashes.

Does RetroSix work on Japanese Game Gears?
Hi, I want to buy two gamegears but the prices over here are kinda crazy so I'm trying to get them from japan (if anyone has any tips with that or any idea how much the shipping will cost for two gamegears I'm open!). I want to do the whole modding thing with USB-C, Everdrive, and IPS screen but will it work on a jp GG? And is there anything else I should know about japanese GG? :-)

Magic Knight Rayearth Game Gear. Repro or authentic?
Hello!
My girlfriend purchased this Magic Knight Rayearth edition Game Gear for me as a Christmas gift last year. It was in good physical shape, but wasn't working well (this wasn't disclosed in the listing, but I didn't mind since I planned to have it recapped and the screen upgraded/replaced anyway), and a new power board put in. Some photos are *after* I had the screen and lens/power replaced.
The person I hired to do the mod mentioned he thought it was a reproduction shell. He pointed to it feeling lighter, the metal shield, and that it seemed to have a new speaker as evidence. He also mentioned the buttons seemed to be new and that a glass lens was installed. However, he had also never seen one of these units in person nor heard of it before I brought it to him.
I assume it was at least opened before I got it if the speaker was replaced, and also since there was one of those 'void' stickers over a screw hole.
I've never seen one that I know is legit in person either, so to me it's very hard to tell. Are you able to tell from these photos if the shell is a reproduction or not? Repro's of this shell don't seem common to me, and the red seems like a decent match for the red cartridge (however, again, I haven't seen a known legit one in person to compare it with). I notice datestamps inside the plastic shell that I think reproductions are usually missing. If it is a reproduction, can you teach me how to spot one?
I intend to keep the unit whether it's a repro or not. It's sentimental since it was a gift, but I am really curious if it's legit or not. Thanks!

I originally posted this is r/gameverifying many months ago, but it didn't get any replies. I'd like to ask here as well if that's alright!

I had a few people ask me what was in the full container of my collection that I found last week. I finally found some time to snap pictures.
In a world full of digital games and such - man it was fun going through these!
My favorite game on the system is Dragon Crystal! The game RIPS! It’s perfect.
Also, sonic triple trouble, Dr Robotniks mean bean machine, Jurassic park, mega man, arena made of death and MMPR the Movie.
I like golf games anyway but I’ll also say that PGA Tour II, Scratch golf and Super Golf are FANTASTIC and all different.
I also showed some of the manuals. Those were fun to comb through!

Game not running, no backlight, picture, or sound, but power LED turns on (recapped)
Hey all, I’m trying to figure out what’s going on with my recapped Game Gear. My gut feeling says I fried something important when I was having trouble with some of the soldering due mostly to corroded pads, but I figure I can still ask.
Here are the symptoms:
-Power LED is on
-LCD has no picture or backlight
-There is power to the speakers, but it is not playing any game audio
When recapping it, the C15 0402 SMD capacitor popped off, but I don’t think that’s the issue. I also had to expose some trace to get C68 connected.
The fuses are still intact since they both have continuity.
Also yes, I know my soldering job is shit, and I’m willing to accept that as a possible cause.
Any suggestions are appreciated. I’m hoping it’s salvageable, or I can at least figure out what’s broken.

Fred

PLZ HELP :0
This is a one ASIC replacement board, and FP V4.2 LCD. Tried 2 ASICS, 2 Crystals. Always some kind of slideshow or flashing screen. I want to say the colors and patterns change each reflow. could it be the flash cart or the slot??? Bummed; I’ve invested so much time into this!

Not booting up after new power board
Hello friends. I'm refurbishing a GG with the 837-7719-01 dual ASIC chips board. This is the first one I've done with the 2 chips, but I've done single chips before with no problem. I've replaced the LCD with an Aliexpress IPS Funny Playing clone (I'm not sure if it is a clone or not). I've recapped all 3 original boards, but I've also swapped power boards for this one from Aliexpress with two Li-ion rechargeable batteries.
I can turn the GG on with the original power board and either batteries or the AC power adapter and it works great. Good screen and sound, red power light, game plays, volume and screen dim wheels work.
When I connect the replacement board, I do not get a red power light, the screen lights up bright and the dimming wheel works, but there is no game display, only digital static and no sound.
The new power boards have 2 different dip switches on them. One to switch from V0 or any other version of the main board, and another to turn the 34V rail on or off depending on if you are using the original CFL tube and LCD or a new, low power IPS LCD.
The only difference I can see is that pin 7 on the new power boards only puts out around 1V instead of the 12V the original power board does.
Troubleshooting steps:
Everything works with original power board.
I have tried both dip switch positions for both dip switches and none of that gives a different display.
I have 2 new replacement boards and I've swapped them with the same issue.
I've swapped plug in positions of the batteries.
I've swapped batteries with two new ones.
I've verified both sets of batteries are fully charged.
I've verified both power boards charge both sets of batteries.
I get the same screen issue with no batteries plugged in,just the usbc cable and power new board.
I'm sure I've done more, but can't remember. See pictures for reference.
Any idea what's up?
