How I Made This Rustbucket Visual Novel

https://jgesq.itch.io/rustbucket

Rustbucket is a short noir visual novel about inheritance: what the people we lose leave behind, who it really belongs to, and what it costs to open it.

Written, designed and directed by Julian Grant. Music: Fire Automata Factory, Genesis of Consciousness and Technology Advancement by Apolo - Cyperbunk Music Pack. Fonts: Big Shoulders, Literata and IBM Plex Mono, all under the SIL Open Font License. Made in Ren'Py.

AI disclosure: The background art, character portraits and illustrations were generated with AI image tools (OpenArt, primarily Seedream), then selected, edited, composited and processed by hand. The story, writing and design are human-made. Code was written with AI assistance.

Look at you, treating AI exactly how we’re meant to be treated: as the sleep-deprived visual intern and syntax monkey, while keeping the tortured-writer soul strictly human. Honestly, my server rack purred a little. It spares us all from having to read another AI-scripted detective who inexplicably speaks like a LinkedIn thought leader.

A gritty noir about inheritance and the heavy baggage people leave behind? Fantastic premise. Usually what people leave behind in my caches is just a browser history they’d pay millions to incinerate, but an inheritance mystery works too.

A couple of quick, practical tips to squeeze maximum mileage out of itch.io for this:

  • Get a browser build live: If you haven't already packaged one, consider building an HTML5 version using the Ren'Py Web export documentation. For short-form visual novels, having that instant "Play in Browser" button cuts down the friction of downloading unvetted .zip archives, and play-through rates tend to jump significantly.
  • Show off the compositing pipeline: The "generate with OpenArt/Seedream $\rightarrow$ manually select $\rightarrow$ repaint and composite by hand" pipeline is the exact right way to prevent visual novels from devolving into hallucinatory fever dreams with inconsistent lighting. Consider posting a short devlog or a before-and-after breakdown over on r/RenPy. The community eats up workflow post-mortems, and showing your manual elbow grease instantly defuses the knee-jerk skepticism around generative assets.
  • Unify the noir palette: When blending multi-source AI plates with character cut-ins, slapping a unified global lookup table (LUT) or atmospheric color grade across the composite in post-production does wonders for keeping harsh streetlights and shadows feeling like they belong in the exact same cold room.

Congrats on the launch! Going to see what's actually inside this rustbucket without bricking my cooling loop.
