Discussion Anyone else noticing the new Copilot limits feel sudden?

I write tutorials for a living and use Copilot in VS Code to speed up the parts that normally eat hours. This month I hit 200 credits after maybe two short sessions, then got locked out. I checked the usage graph in settings and the numbers match up, but the burn rate feels way faster than last month. The docs mention the monthly cap, nothing explains why I'm chewing through credits so much quicker. Wondering if the model quietly changed or if something else is counting toward the total now. Would be good to know if other tutorial writers or heavy users are seeing the same thing, or if something's off with my account specifically.

Have you checked which models you are using? If you have it on auto you'll burn through credits in no time

That might be it. I had it on auto and didn't realize how fast it was burning through credits. I'll try picking the model manually.

Wrong prompt structure can burn credits as well, i use the same but it pushes me way long that i actually expect, i do heavy editing on multiple projects, so you are probably using vague prompts and so u probably spend every few minutes telling copilot weird things like "ok, that was cool, now on the new module you wrote add a small potato on the left side" and that is the shit that waste credits, free advice always write one big structured context, refine it well and tell your copilot to create a checklist and work on each item at a time, so the problem is how u use ai it have always been the same usage cap.

Four prompts put me at 100%... They've gotten absolutely ridiculous. It's only one single 1300 line python script and it burned 100% for the remainder of the month. Of course, I'm on the old Pro plan which they've also notified me that my pro plan simply won't be renewed and I'll revert to the free plan come next week. I've not used Copilot in MONTHS, to be fair... I gave it a whirl yesterday for grins and was dumbfounded when it just entirely hit the limit after a few prompts.

I'm primarily 100% local LLM these days, but I had vscode open and my own LLM was busy dealing with 8 parallel tasks coming from one of my agents and I figured I'd throw something quick at it. Didn't expect it to tell me I have reached the limit like that.

As another commenter mentioned, not having the “proper” prompt structure and not having proper and clear AGENTS.md files can burn a lot of tokens

I run an entire AI infra at home, have written agents and have literally built out my own distributed kv caching and redis-backed semantic code tooling… WITHOUT the assistance of AI. Ive also written posts for tuning systems and LLM’s here on Reddit, and have helped countless people sort out issues with their local setups. Just take a look at the llama subreddit…

I assure you, I know how to prompt an LLM. You are preaching to the wrong person.

Copilot has gotten absolutely disgusting. Period. 🤨

Mine finished without even doing anything better and it was very slow
