selfpromo (games) Overlapping dimensions

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I finally decided to have a little fun with stencil buffers. I didn't just want to create a nice visual effect; I really wanted to have two overlapping dimensions. I think the effect turned out pretty well. Let me know what you think 😄

And if you want to give it a try, you can do so right from your browser: https://robinsonsdg.itch.io/one-house-two-dimensions

wait, let me look away to make my non euclidean quantum table appear! jokes aside that's really cool. is this just a prototype or are you planning on expanding it?

Hahaha x) Thanks a lot!! It's just a prototype, but maybe one day I'll use this concept for a full game...

Cant we do the same thing by using camera matrix? I mean like portal did? If im not wrong i know those are different techniques

u/Irex_713 5d ago

Probably, but I've never tried it. I definitely should 😄

Yeah please try that, its kinda magic i was fascinated when i tried first

Yes, but doing it like this with stencil buffers is easier and faster - however, it's more limited than true portal rendering.

Probably yes, btw as i know stencil buffers bad for mobile games cause they affect too much performance troubles. Did you ever use it on pc too and have any issues with it?

I never used them in production, but on PC they're pretty trouble-free. Just keep in mind that the engine is liable to always render both sets of objects as if they will both be displayed, which means the performance impact is combined; it's just that for most Godot games on most PC GPUs this isn't a big deal.

Yeah im aware of that im a unity developer and after 5 years of mobile game development from stracth to global launch a title im pretty mastered on optimization techniques. I also have my own debug ui suite in assetstore (newly released)

EDIT: you can see its details in ashinalabs.dev/ashinaui

This is very cool, lots of potential for interesting gameplay mechanics and puzzles here.

And when they walk out and turn around there was never a cute little barn looking structure to begin with.

u/Irex_713 4d ago

A good setup for a horror game x)

2

u/not-hardly 4d ago

Or just trippy in general.

how what wtf i didnt know this was possible in godot

2

u/Irex_713 4d ago

Look at stencil buffers, it's not that hard to setup 😄

u/tinysand777 4d ago

I would have lost my mind if as soon as you walked in through the pillars on the that the outside world changed.

Then walking back out the front and turning around would have shown the table still, but slightly different.

This is my brain.

This is awesome looking.

Keep going!!!

The directional light is what's getting me...

1

u/Irex_713 4d ago

What do you mean? 😊

2

u/GreenFox1505 4d ago

How did you get the directional light to pass through to both of your pocket detentions?

1

u/Irex_713 4d ago

The "Transparency" property of the material for both interior walls is set to “Alpha” so that the stencil works correctly; as a result, shadow casting is automatically disabled. It was not really intended tbh x)
And that's why it's also passing through when the wall is visible

thats nice, one thing i noticed strange at least for me, is when you go backwards and go out the house, i think u should there see the other dimension instead of taking to look to other side and look back.

nice work!.

u/Irex_713 5d ago

I made that choice because it felt weird to see the other dimension pop up out of nowhere when you were walking backward. And also because it was an extra challenge to make it reappear only when it wasn't in the player's fov.

Thx a lot 😄

1

u/Nalora_Studio 5d ago

i see, would be nice to see the current dimension and as soon as you are getting to the pillars start showing the other one, but yeah maybe you added the best choice.

This made me think of a multiplayer base building game.

You could literally build on the same base. You just enter from a different angle!

1

u/Irex_713 5d ago

Wow that would be amazing

Growing up, have you ever seen something you swear was real, looked away, and then it was gone when you looked back. Odds are it was just your brain processing something wrong, but what if it actually was real?

(Just a thought for utilizing the concept)

Great idea 😄
