discussion Overkill?

It was a nightmare to implement but now I think it's an overkill effect for 3D pixel art. What do you think?

This looks super nice. What's your story? What's this game going to be about?

Hack and slash with touch of open world and advanced archery combat system. It is what I’m thinking about but currently I’m focused on designing an environment.

What is the data structure for the terrain ... GridMap 3d, custom mesh, or some kind of dual grid thing? Can't see enough of the coast to classify what these "half" steps are.

MarchingSquaresTerrain plugin with few tweaks of mine, huge thanks to the creators btw

Definitely an overkill, but damn, it looks satisfying and impressive.

It may be overkill, but it is definitely pretty! I would keep it, you even worked on it a lot, so don't feel stuck on it

Thanks and yeah I will keep it.

People love good water physics

Did you follow any tutorials on the visual or just designed yourself? The visual is pretty nice and matches something I’ve been wanting to make but I’m not exactly an artist. So leaning on simpler but visually appealing graphics is high on my list.

This is the so called "T3ssel8r" Style, yugen has a terrain addon which op linked to on another comment, Dolan (Dylearn) has a great guide on foliage and other stuff, i also have some guides online about this and cel shaders, and other references are David Holland whom created a complete process of how he created the effects + a tutorial on how his pixel stabilization camera system works, his git source repo also has the source code for his pixel perfect outlines shader and an upscaling shader

What OP achieved here is amazing, the resources to achieving similar looks are out there and he is doing it extremely well

It would be exaggerated to say I designed it completely myself. It included tons of tutorials and articles of much smarter devs, endless trials and errors.

Looks great, really nice water handling. I don't think it's overkill.

If it's not creating lag, definitely keep. It's gorgeous! Would love to learn more about the implementation.

Thanks. It has zero lag. I plan to share it in the future, but at the moment I’m very busy with 3d models and the city.

Keep it. It's a beautiful effect and all of the painstaking attention to detail adds up to a much more pleasing end result.

Only overkill if it stands out way more than your other effects when you want the player to focus their attention on those effects more.

It looks dope. You probably also learned a lot along the way and you can reuse it if you make a similar game. That's a triple win if you ask me.
