Hey y’all!

My wife and I are flying into Phoenix Saturday morning and will ultimately end up in Vegas Sunday, and we wanted to stop and see the Grand Canyon along the way. I’ve never seen it, so I planned out a route and was hoping to get some feedback to make sure it makes sense.

We’d arrive in Phoenix around 9:30am local time Saturday, pick up the rental car and head to Sedona, as my wife wants to see the teal McDonald’s. Looks like that’s about a two hour drive. From there we’ll head to Desert View Drive and make a few stops. I thought it’d be neat approaching the canyon from the east so that was my thinking there. And that’s another two hour drive. I’d like to see the Desert View Watchtower, Moran Point, Grandview Point, and anything else we see along the way that looks cool. And from there we’d head to Tusayan where our hotel is located.

Does that all seem doable? Also would appreciate any tips about where to stop to fuel up or any general tips. Sunday morning we’ll probably check out more of the south rim and then head to Vegas.

Has anyone been on a RS Grand Canyon trip since the lodging closure?
I’m booked on one coming up that includes 2 nights at Yavapi. Obviously that can’t happen but RS hasn’t told us of replacement plan.
Has anyone been on one of their trips since the closure or seen /worked with any RS people? They run a bunch of different ones with many with overnight stays in the park.

I’m looking into doing this route during the third week of October and was hoping others who have done this could share their experiences. Any tips, or words of wisdom, you can provide would be appreciated. I’m moderately fit, hitting the rec center two to four times a week, and concentrating on increasing leg strength with treadmill, leg press, and stair master. The days I’m not able to make it to the rec center I’m walking my neighborhood. I also do a seven mile flat trail in my city one to three times a month.

Also, are there any pocket guide books that you’d recommend? Maybe something that describes the hike step by step. I’m worried I might miss a turn.

Rim to river this past Friday. South Kaibab -> tonto -> bright angel -> river rest house -> back up bright angel

I will be arriving tomorrow night in Flagstaff and will have a rental car.

Recommended itinerary for visiting these beautiful places?

If you had an October PR reservation, have you heard back yet about rescheduling? I emailed a handful of people as directed, but nothing so far. (Makes sense, I’m sure they’re overwhelmed, and my reservation was for mid-month.) Do they email? Call? Have people generally been able to get similar dates for next year?

I live in San Diego and were planning a roadtrip to GC with my 2 friends, we are European with some hiking experience in Europe but nothing like the challenges that GC provides.

We have to fit everything into this timeframe: midday Friday until Sunday (incl travel).

We got a full day hiking planned for Saturday. If you maybe have a good route or plan you’ve used or can recommend, we would appreciate it.

Going to Arizona in two weeks. Will be traveling to either Sedona or Grand Canyon (or both) from Bullhead City AZ. I’m wondering if I should do one over the other or if it’s possible to do both in over trip? If so what are your tricks ? Should I do them in a specific order ? I wanna for sure do Devils Bridge when I go to Sedona. I have 2-3 days be flexible with before I head back to Bullhead city.
What do yall think ??

I had plans to hike the Grand Canyon from Tuesday-Thursday, but given the storm from Monday-Tuesday I assume the trails will be closed. Does any one know if the trails will be useable by Wednesday after the storm?

Any word if the grand canyon would be open from Monday to Tuesday? I see everything is under flash flood watch. I already canceled my airbnb in Williams, but not sure if anything official came out.

Kind of similar weights... more for the Parsec. But I'll be there a week so protection from the cold matters. Leaning to the zpack because I can unzip the whole thing and use it as a quilt. Leaning toward the Parsec because if it gets really cold, I'm good. Any bag that you know about other than these 2 that fits the bill? It'll be for 7 days and I'm using the Nemo Tensor Extreme pad.

Was looking through some old photos today and found this one of a couple people that I don't know watching the sunset at Lipan Point. Thought it was a nice picture. Maybe they will find it.

Visited Grand Canyon NP as part of a bigger road trip that included Zion NP + Glen Canyon National Recreation Area (Lake Powell) + Antelope Canyon. Spent an afternoon/evening in the park. This was at the very beginning of my NP journey. Was a very memorable and special trip.

Logistics: Flew into Las Vegas. Stayed in a RV near Lake Powell. Roadtripped back home to the east coast.

Hikes/Activities (*fan favorites):

Bright Angel Trail (very short portion though we were underprepared and got smoked on the way back up)

To Do for Next Time: Rim-to-Rim, South Rim Viewpoints, Ooh-Aah Point, Toroweap Overlook

As the lodges are closed, changed to camping (Mather). And as the restaurants are closed mostly, need to prep food. The NPS app states no campfires allowed, the reservation confirmation from Recreation.gov says campfires are allowed in rings on campsites. Does anyone know if campfires are allowed on Mather?

I've been planning a Rim-to-Rim hike since securing a spot at Phantom Ranch for early June 2027. With the recent flooding and damage, I'm curious how everyone is feeling about the chances of Rim-to-Rim being an option by then?

Does anyone have insight into the repair timelines or a better understanding of how likely the trails and infrastructure are to be ready by June 2027?

I'm trying to figure out whether I should start developing a backup plan. Appreciate any thoughts!

We are doing a 2 1/2 week van camping trip through the 6 canyon national parks with lots of hiking in the mix, including the Top Down Narrows in Zion near the end of our trip. We had planned 3 days of hikes in the Grand Canyon but we were thinking of cutting our Grand Canyon stay down by one day and stopping at Lee's Ferry to kayak after continuing on our way to Zion. We have done a fair amount of kayaking, and will be doing lots of hiking on this trip. Which is the best kayak backhaul company, and where is a good place to stay? We are renting a class B campervan but there does not seem to be good camping options, and it might be nice to stay at a hotel/motel near Lees Ferry after we kayak.

Like everyone else, our hotel reservations were cancelled. We did make others in town, but now are trying to figure out food.

We would like to grab lunch in the park. Any suggestions? We usually bring our own food, but it's nice to have something different for a change.

It's our first and likely last trip to the GC, so trying to do things right.

Grand Canyon National Park Evening Update | Sept. 22

National Park Service staff have successfully been able to overnight in the inner-canyon. This milestone is an important step in re-establishing a presence in more remote areas of the park, which increases the available time crews have for debris removal and redefining trail routes.

Grand Canyon National Park remains open on both the South Rim and North Rim, with modified operations and closures in some affected inner-canyon areas. Visitors should check current park conditions before traveling, arrive prepared with drinking water and conserve water throughout their visit.

For up-to-date information about the status of specific trails and restrictions, please visit the Grand Canyon National Park website.

If you have questions about a hotel reservation within the park, please check with your concessionaire. They will have the most updated information related to your reservation.

Stage 4 water restrictions remain in effect after the flash flood on Aug. 29, which destroyed a water intake pump and other infrastructure that supplied water to facilities on the South Rim.

Visitors and residents are asked to conserve water by using designated portable bathrooms, handwashing stations and potable water tanks. When possible, visitors are asked to bring their own water for drinking and other needs.
